Another one bites the dust

Posted by Lee on August 17, 2006 12:58 PM |

Dirk Kuyt’s arrival at Anfield may well be another transfer blow for Newcastle United fans but it has to be said the Dutchman never really showed enough desire to be worthy of wearing the legendary number 9 shirt.

All along the 26-year-old - who had a pretty average World Cup to put it at its most charitable - longed for a move to his boyhood heroes Liverpool and for £11million of the Anfield coffers, he’s got his wish.

Good.

Will he be worth it? We’ll have to wait and see. United don’t want somebody who would rather be at Liverpool.

My opinion is that whoever arrives to succeed Alan Shearer has to be desperate to do the job.

They don’t have to bleed black and white like Shearer did.

Andy Cole and Les Ferdinand are evidence of that after arriving as out of Tooners but still writing their names into Geordie folklore after their goalscoring exploits in a United shirt.

The great thing about people like Cole and Ferdinand, and David Kelly and Mick Quinn before them, is that they wanted to succeed so much and that resulted in a glut of goals.

That’s what United are after.

Goals and pace are now paramount to United’s chances this season but it doesn’t seem as simple as that, they seemingly don’t grow on trees.

Glenn Roeder to his credit has scoured Europe and beyond so far for a striker but is determined to make sure he gets the right man.

Time isn’t on his side and had Michael Owen been fit, the pressure wouldn’t have been so great.

But as Wigan begin preparing the journey to Tyneside it’s fair to say a new striker seems most unlikely with the new season about to kick-off.

Roeder is in a tricky situation.

United are quite rightly reluctant to see more money wasted on another flop in the transfer market and Roeder knows that any player he expresses an interest in will see the price bumped up just because he is manager of Newcastle.

Yet none of this is of any consolation to the Toon Army at the moment.

The reality of the situation is Shola Ameobi goes into the game against Wigan with a responsibility to get the goals.

And those around him are now under pressure to support him, probably the likes of Scott Parker, Nobby Solano, Emre and Damien Duff to start with and if it isn’t going to plan a certain Albert Luque may have to emerge as the hero.

Will it be enough though?

Or will a goalless start to the season result in a knee-jerk reaction to get in any striker and not necessarily the new number 9?

*On the subject of number 9s, two of United's former strikers, Supermac and Joe Allon will be giving their opinion on who should succeed Shearer at IDOLS before the Wigan game in a talk-in.
Be there. Both are never afraid to let their opinions in the open air.
The talk-in kicks off at 1pm and is FREE

I'm not sure about your comments about him not wanting to join Newcastle - I read quotes only a few days ago from him saying that he would love to be Shearer's replacement and he said explicitly that Newcastle were his first choice over Liverpool. I can only assume Glenn didn't want to take the risk? Or maybe we can't afford £11m? If it's the latter, I hope it's not because we paid £5m for a winger we didn't need!

Regardless of what the reasons are for Kuyt joining Liverpool, we are in the brown stuff big time. Roeder obviously doesn't fancy Saviola, and the only other half decent striker we seem to have any chance of signing is Martins - a 40 year old Earnshaw with muscles.

I would love to think Roeder has something up his sleeve, but sadly I doubt it.

"Newcastle dont want anyone who would rather be at liverpool" c,mon Lee the boy Owen falls heavily in to that bracket. That aside i think the truth of the matter is we will start the the season with just Shola and this is down to Fred not having faith in Roeders ability or longetivety as a manager. The need for a striker rose its head way before the start of last season as Shearer anounced his retirement, even though we squeezed one more season out of him the problem was always there and two days away from the start of the season it looks bleak.Answer this ,,if it was Keegan,Gullit,Dalgliesh,Souness or Robson at the helm would we be going into a season so ill-equiped , i dont think we would and buying Duff proved there is a few bob in the big mans coffers, and personally i think the real money is being piggy banked for Shearers return. The danger of starting the season with what we have now is that if Shola picks up a knock we are in trouble ..All the talk is of a super star striker comming in and that looks way off the mark now but at the bare minimum we need one more striker, that could well be Nugent who looks promising or another championship player looking for a chance either way we need someone now and Shearers replacement will have to come in January..

Yeah, we've lost Kuyt and Martins and enter the campaign with two strikers who actually are not. Until FS and GR find the right(?) man to fill the giant gap left by AS, let's get behind the team and SUPPORT them. Give Shola and Unluque a chance and play Zog in the hole behind them. Keep our heads lifted, don't panic and give Glenn the time he needs to buy quality before the window closes.
And what about a (couple of) new defender(s)??

I think we will have to start the season against a poor Wigan with the team we have, I also think there will be only 1 new player before the transfer window closes at the end of the Month, and there lies the tale of woe coming from the back room about injuries and bad luck, when we slide ever closer to the bottom. (I hope I am wrong and everybody can say I told you so if i am.)
Sorry to have a bleak outlook on my life blood club but I'm sure you will all agree we've seen it all before.

Gerry Hagon wrote...

The real problem at St James' is the lack of any forward thinking by the board. The striker problem has been there ever since Shearer's announcement of his retirement and players like Bent, Ashton and others available at that time should at least have been approached. Yes, we know that the club has been unlucky with Owen, but we cannot expect one man to solve all our striking problems and two more Premiership standard forwards should have been signed by now.
And why on earth did we let Chopra go? He was not everyone's idea of the complete centre forward but he was quick, enthusiastic a proven scorer and would have been very useful now. The less said about the Bellamy debacle the better.
Come back Sir John and instill some ambition and common sense again.

Ian Graham wrote...

I agree with Gerry, the retirement of Alan Shearer has been known about obviously for a very long time. So the question to ask is why have our backroom staff / scouts not been on the replacement case since then.
OK lets now be a bit more positive and thank god we did not have to fly the Kuyt at St James, as for Martins you might get him at a knock down price for age depreciation (second hand car market scenario).
So who is left..... the mind bloggles.
What about, well yes what about!!!!

It's really a mess that we have to start the season without at least 2 confirmed strikers. There was so much warning and time to fix the impending problem and we still land ourselves into this fix. I agree, they should have never let Chopra gone. I wonder which players can play as a 2nd striker

RAHUL BANERJEE wrote...

well i am glad that kuyt has not come to newcastle as he doesnt have the quality to be fit of wearing the no 9 jersey and
11million is far too much
i want roeder to pursue klose who is in great form
and is a proven star at the
highest level also nicholas
anelka is another option
he has pace and has proven
himself in the premiership
roeder should pursue klose
as even without champions
league football the temptation of playing in the
best league in the world
may be too much to resist
it would be a great buy

KT wrote...

Well time is a ticking and I personally thought it would of been done and dusted by now, well I hoped. Looks like we start the premiership minus a decent striker. Is this setting the scene for the rest of the season?? Surely if we were going to get someone half decent we would of by now. :-(

Steve Mc wrote...

I think Kuyt would have been class for the toon - he's got a good record and it's a crying shame that him and Bellamy will line up for the scousers when they should both be starting for us.

Just think it's a shambles - we should have bought sensibly last summer before we blew everything on Owen. Owen is a class act - but he's been playing since he was 16, getting progressivly injury ridden and there has to major questions over whether he'll ever be the same player again.

. I like Roeder, but for him to say "There's no pressure to bring anyone in as such" is a complete joke. We need 2 strikers, a left back and a centre half. As another fan pointed out - Blackburn have got Jason Roberts and Benni McCArthy for £6 million - surely they could have done a job.?

Glenn has faith in Shola and am sure he will bring in at least one decent striker now and one i transfer window. Shola played well against Wigan and he knows that this is his big chance. I wish him well. Chopra was not good enough to be honest. He is a good championship player nothing more. I hope Glenn gives Nzogbia a good run out,the kid is a class act and deserving of a starting place.
