And so it looks like Middlesbrough are playing hardball with Newcastle United over Mark Viduka on transfer deadline day.
Viduka is suggesting he wants to quit Teesside and join United but Boro chief executive Keith Lamb has said he’s going nowhere.
News that the Aussie could be set for United resulted in a mixed reaction earlier today but one thing he has took with him wherever he’s gone, amongst other things, is goals.
With the clock ticking towards midnight though, United’s transfer activity this summer could end with Damien Duff, Oba Martins and Guiseppe Rossi in the bag.
That’s still not bad - but the feeling on Tyneside has to be the squad needs more depth and if most Geordies spoke from the heart probably a bit more glitter.
Toon fans have also had to watch in the last 24 hours as the likes of Thomas Gravesen, Steed Malbranque and Carlos Tévez have all put pen to paper at other clubs.
Not to mention a host of others throughout what has been a frustrating summer.
And going out today was James Milner for a dose of deja vu after he made an identical journey to Villa Park to the one he made exactly 12 months ago.
However, within hours of Milner setting off for Birmingham the winger was recalled and told to head back to Tyneside.
So Milner stays for now but the 20-year-old must be wondering just what is going on.
We’ll have to wait until midnight to see the final outcome but just like last year it looks to be going right to wire.
Penny for your thoughts anyone?
