Raise the roof (again)

Newcastle United fans have never required gimmicks to show that they are the best on the planet.
But when the United board thought up the brilliant idea to provide fans with a free scarf ahead of Alan Shearerâ≢s testimonial - it resulted in a simply hair raising atmosphere at St Jamesâ≢ Park - nobody could have predicted a success like it.
Now every Toon fan present on Saturday against Wigan will get a free scarf.
The sight of a capacity crowd twirling scarves around their head won plaudits worldwide.
Former Toon greats like Rob Lee, Les Ferdinand and Steve Watson admitted it was like the Keegan years all over again while more fresh-faced young guns like Peter Ramage and Steven Taylor revelled in the atmosphere.
The fans loved it and even ex-United boss and World Cup winner Jack Charlton joined in the scarf waving.
Fans, players and officials were in unison to create one of the most memorable atmospheres in the clubâ≢s history.
At the time many people imagined what it would be like if that atmosphere could be re-produced game in, game out in the Premiership.
And now with a new season upon us the United faithful have the perfect chance to do exactly that.
True, what happens on the pitch makes such a difference.
Yet with a clean slate going into the new season that â∠Âworth a goal head-startââ¬? backdrop could have Wigan running around like headless chickens!
Can Newcastle fans exceed even their own sky high standards at St Jamesâ≢ Park this season?

Well the board has got 2 things right this summer, signing Duff and giving scarfs away on the opening home game. Well done the board. I was one of the unlucky ones that had to watch wor Al's game on TV. When I seen the WHOLE stadium waving scarfs, my hairs on my neck stud up and I had a tear in my eye (as well as thinking - you've been great Shearer and we will miss ya). Us Toon fans are the best in the world, even if our board, players or performances aren't at 'times'. Last comment to the board . . . 'You've given us the scarfs . . . now give us the players we deserve, we're in Europe this season, lets ensure we STAY there.
Lets hope we can make St James the bastion of invincibility that we know it can be!
Why not join former Newcastle Number Nines Joe Allon and Supermac at 'Idols Bar' Newcastle at 1pm before the Wigan game this Saturday. They will be talking about the new season and answering your questions!
Isn't it fantastic FS is giving us all black and white scarfs again at the Wigan match, presumably this is in lieu of a striker
That's a miserable outlook that Ray.
I bet you weren't complaining last August when Owen and Nobby arrived on the final day of the transfer window.
The money wasted on Owen has jepordised our spending power this season.
All very well saying the money on Owen was wasted now, but we couldn't really have known he would tear his knee ligaments could we?
This is a great Blog!
