United still playing the waiting game

Posted by Lee on August 11, 2006 12:53 PM |

With the hands of time ticking towards the last day of the month, transfer deadline day to you and I, Newcastle are still tracking a much needed striker to both score goals and attempt to fill the shoes of Alan Shearer.

Les Ferdinand recently told the Chronicle that United can search “the world and even the universe to find the man to replace Shearer and they could still fail.

Sir Les of course is spot on. But we still need to find somebody and quickly.

I’m sure that most fans are becoming anxious as other clubs around Europe, most recently Inter Milan who snapped up Zlatan Ibrahimovic yesterday, boost their striking options.

But at the same time they may appreciate the calm approach of Glenn Roeder in the transfer market - a man who seems determined to sign somebody right for Newcastle United.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was probably one of those names that Roeder would loved to have signed but some of targets that have been mentioned have so far proved to be wide of the mark.

Dirk Kuyt, Francesco Tavano, Ronaldo, Jermaine Defoe, Juan Pablo Angel, James Beattie, Nicolas Anelka, Marlon Harewood and even little James Brown at Hartlepool have all been mentioned by various media sources and a hat full of others - but still we wait.

Some of the above have moved on, some remain in limbo.

The latest name to come our way is that of Obafemi Martins of Inter Milan - one of the fastest players in Europe no less!

But would the Nigerian be enough to satisfy the fans?

Shola Ameobi, who has been in good form in pre-season, cannot do the job alone and Albert Luque has much to prove regardless of whether your bottle of San Miguel is half full or half empty!

And when Shola went down in a heap last night against Ventspils, my heart sank - where would be without him at the minute?

It can’t be easy finding somebody who is going to do a Shearer, can it?

But then again it is a mission that has to be successful.

Roeder though has told us United are very close to signing two or three players within the next 10 days.

In that case I’m counting those days down like a kid at Christmas.

Personally I think Martins would be a good signing - but only on loan. He is short and pacey, and plays off defenders' shoulders - just like Michael Owen. They simply can't play together as they are too similar, so signing Martins permanently would be a very strange (and costly?) decision.

Kuyt, on the other hand, could play with Ameobi, Luque or Owen - he has a bit of everything to his game and I think he'd be worth a gamble at £10m if he doesn't go to Liverpool.

One player who I would simply love at the Toon is Saviola. He can play the Owen role, or he can drop off and link the midfield to the attack. He has pace, skill, creativity, and above all else he guarantees goals. Not only that but he has brings flair and excitement - exactly what the Toon Army thrives on! Wherever he has been, he has hit double figures every season - his goalscoring record is outstanding. In his last five seasons his goal tallies have been 21, 20 and 17 at Barcelona, 11 at Monaco and 14 at Sevilla. What would we give for someone who can consistently score double figures? Around £3m is the asking price, whereas Martins is supposedly going to cost in the region of £10m or perhaps even more. If we got Saviola, the worst case scenario is that he doesn't adjust, in which case we can hardly make much loss on £3m next summer - and Owen will be back by then. In addition, with his Spanish background he would help Luque a great deal. He has talent and he has a point to prove, since Barca have discarded him - if Roeder doesn't want to pursue him, I feel we're entitled to know exactly why not.

And one other thing: "Luque has much to prove regardless of whether your bottle of San Miguel is half full or half empty!" - that's a classic!

Saviola does sound like a good bet for 3million pounds, but it seems that his best playing days are behind already.

Arsenal do have a brood of young strikers like Arturo Lupoli. Loaning is a good alternative than risking good transfer money under a tight deadline.

But frankly speaking, not having any well-establish strikers is no any better than signing one when it is so close to the start of a highly competitive league.

This long protracted transfer saga is a serious distraction to pre-season preparations.

If Newcastle can land Obafemi Martins it will be a good start. any one who can run 100M in under 11 secs will frighten defenders. Plus only being 22 (I think unless he's still hiding his real age), he is a player who could commit himself to the club for a long time and could challenge the 206 of the great man.

I THINK MARTINS WOULD BE A GOOD SIGNING FOR US BUT HE IS NOT THE GOALSCORER WE ARE LOOKING FOR COS HE IS NO 20 GOAL A SEASON KIND OF STRIKER MORE OF A PROVIDER.DIRK KUYT MIGHT BE THE PROLIFIC STRIKER WE ARE CRYING OUT FOR BUT I WOULD EVEN ATTEMPT TO SIGN RONALDO ON A YEARS LOAN FROM REAL MADRID PEOPLE SAY HE`S NOT THE STRIKER HE WAS A FEW YEARS AGO BUT WE COULD`VE SIGNED ON A YEARS LOAN WITH AN OPTION OF SIGNING HIM PERMANENT IF HE IF IS SUCCESSFUL DURING THE YEAR.THERE IS ALSO A STRIKER AT VALENCIA CALLED DAVID VILLA WHO WOULD BE A GREAT SIGNING,HE SCORED OVER 20 TIMES IN PRIMERA LIGA LAST YEAR.

Stephen, how can you say Martins is a provider? His game is all about pace and goal-poaching!

Good call on David Villa though, although I doubt he'd be interested in joining us, plus Valencia would demand a massive fee and I can't see Roeder going for another Spanish striker as he obviously doesn't like Luque!

Les is stating the obvious as there is only and probably only ever be one player in the same mould as shearer. The bloke was a legend and the only other player of his generation who even came close was Batistuta.Having said that this does not help Glens quest for a replacement and no disrespect to the guy but i think he is more of a manager to get the best out of a established player than to find a hidden gem.So it looks like the big man is going to have to get his cheque book out and buy some quality .For me i would love to see Ashton in black and white and would pull out all the stops to snare him,but i cant see that happening.Adam has raised some valid points about Martins so i will not repeat them, but what i will repeat is Saviola, what a signing that would be and for the measly sum of three million i personnaly think that he could become the catylist to launch Newcastle United back to where we should be.And to finnish on a lighter note ..............Sunderland have taken up there now usual position in the table..who says football is unpredictable. i think nc should first build up there defence! Bramble is not good enough when the pace picks up he is nowhere watch carefully this season,al the other teams just have to wait for the error in the defence wich comes sooner than later! i agree big al is not easy to replace!

I just hope Glenn does not panic buy. If you look at the club finances from the latest report there is not a lot to spend, unless Fred and Duggy are raiding there piggy banks for us? I would have snapped up Andy Johnson short term. He went for a snip. Bellamy would have been my main target but there is obviously too much water under the bridge with regards to Craig. Anyone for a Shearer return?

i can`t believe how many strikers we have been linked with over the summer, virtually everyday it`s been a different player from the likes of kuyt, torres, angel, martins etc im starting to get a bit fed up with it all .henri camara come on no ambition if we got him. im predicting now we will get the striker or two on deadline day like we did with owen last season and it`ll be someone like christian vieri on a free from monaco cos everyone is saying money is tight these days.if we had a canny transfer budget i think he would have kuyt by now. totally agree on javier saviola and david nugent looked good last night for the under 21s

I would like us to sign Kuyt, he has been targeted by both Newcastle and Liverpool and would be a good buy. I also think we need another striker up front, someone like Collins John, Henri Camara and David Villa, someone who scores goals. I would have said Andrew Johnson, but I still think that Jermaine Defoe or Robbie Keane would be a good bet, what with Tottenham signing Berbatov.
