Far from a merry Milner

Posted by Lee on September 1, 2006 10:13 AM |

James MilnerSpare a thought for James Milner this morning.

It was a case of deja vu for the England under-21 star yesterday as he made an identical journey to Villa Park for the second consecutive transfer deadline day.

The Toon winger has grafted his socks off this summer and returned to St James’ Park with a superb attitude after an uncertain time with several Premiership clubs showing an interest in him.

But Milner simply got his head down and put in some tireless performances to help Newcastle reach the latter stages of the UEFA Cup.

Talk that Milner has always wanted to sign for Villa is unfounded.

Because Milner has always said he just wanted to play football at first team level, which he did so well for the Villains last term.

Whether it was at Newcastle or Villa, he just wanted to play and nobody can blame him for that.

He was never against the idea of playing for Newcastle.

If he was told he could go and speak to Villa yesterday that simply means he was no longer wanted on Tyneside.

But then to be told hours later he actually was wanted can only leave his head in pieces.

For Milner it’s a bit like being dumped by your lass because she’s getting back with an ex before being texted for reconciliation talks later in the day when it all hasn’t worked out elsewhere.

Milner is an honest, hard-working player who fits into the old fashioned winger bracket as well.

Don’t forget Milner is still just 20-years-old but already has an old head on young shoulders.

Glenn Roeder now has the job of lifting the players head and its a fair bet that the Toon Army will do their bit too.

Yesterday was a day Milner will want to forget - the question is would anybody blame him if is his performances dipped somewhat enduring such a rollercoaster of emotions?

The way Milner was treated yesterday was nothing short of disgraceful. I wouldn't blame him if he never wanted to play for the club again. It is obvious neither Freddy nor Glenn have any respect for James either as an employee or as a human being, and I feel very sorry for the lad. He has worked harder than anyone for the team this season and, after being treated like that, I'm not sure exactly where he'll find the motivation to continue doing so.

The main worry on the Milner farce is who was the
leading figure. Was it GR or FS who was responsible. If it was Gr then I cannot see how James Milner can be expected to perform.People were right in thinking FS had the power at Nu but I believe the Halls are now
forcing some issues and hence the reason for the
drawback and lack of funds.
The sale of Milner was simply to raise funds for the Viduka transfer. It failed and NU panicked.

And now for a Roeder rant. The way he has treated one of our most promising youngsters does not bode well for our football club. What promising young footballer would want to play for this football club now? Roeder has been lying to us all summer. Constantly telling us he has no intention of selling Milner, then look what happened yesterday. Does he think we are stupid?

He launched a thinly veiled attack on Souness for playing unfit players, saying he would never do that kind of thing because it would be negligent. Then he played an unfit Ameobi in Lillestrom and said "Shola should never have been out there today". Why not, Glenn?

He spent weeks telling us again and again how he would only sign British players with Premiership experience and a point to prove. Then he spends £10m (our entire transfer kitty, judging by yesterday's actions) on a player who has never played a full season in any first team, never scored 20 goals in a season and never played in the Premiership! The most annoying thing about this is that Roeder had previously launched another of his thinly veiled attacks on Souness with regards the players Souness had signed from abroad without doing enough research about their chracters etc (i.e. Luque). Roeder had only seen Martins a few times and admitted himself that he was going on what other people had told him about Martins' character. This is EXACTLY what Souness said about Luque when he signed him. The only difference is that Luque was a proven player over a number of seasons in La Liga (a more similar league to the Premiership than Serie A), and cost half a million less than Martins.

What gives Roeder the right to criticise his predecessor when A) he is guilty of exactly the same things he criticises him for, B) everyone knows that while Souness whinged, he was always honest with the fans, whereas Roeder has been feeding us a pack of lies all summer, and C) if you compare Roeder's signings to Souness', Roeder has no grounds to criticise - Martins, Rossi, Sibierski and Duff? No better than Souness' lot by any stretch of the imagination. At least Souness shared our supporters' ambition and managed to bring players to the club.

What exactly has Roeder been doing all summer apart from lying to us? I'm happy about Duff, but let's face facts - it didn't matter who was in charge of Newcastle, Freddy still would have signed him. We had a lot of easy matches in our run-in last season, some poor sides and some sides with nothing to play for. I'd love us to have a great season and for Roeder to prove me wrong, but I doubt it will happen.

Antoine Sibierski will add height to our under-sized team but not a lot more. I am one very, very unhappy supporter and I am not alone.

After the great success in getting Duff and eventually Obafemi the wheels appear to have come off for Roeder.

Repeated public assertions that we were looking for a left back, a central defender and another centre forward resulted in obtaining none of them. Repeated assertions that the squad was too thin has resulted, from my calculations, in a thinner squad. Watching the actions of other clubs with far less support than ours grabbing exciting buys from abroad is depressing to see.

If we cannot compete successfully against Boro with gates regularly double theirs we have little hope against the top teams, and unless this take-over really happens I see no real challenge for anything this season.

We need people at the top with the real ambition and foresight of John Hall. A take-over seems the only chance of that.

I'm disgusted at the totally inadequate way we managed our transfer dealings!

A total last day farce; did GR have the funds? did FS close the clubs wallet to maximise his profits if a takeover go's ahead?

I don't know, but the talk of last minute attempts for players makes us look a bunch of clowns.

What is far worse than that is the way the club have touted James Milner to Villa only to recall him, as we couldn't manage to bring in Viduka. If that isn't how it happened I hope the club explains what did, as at the minute, for the first time, I'm ashamed of NUFC!!!

Just come down off the cieling after the drama of capturing the two french superstars last night and this morning,,Obviously i,m joking. We were reliably informed by the club they were confident of bringing in two quality players yesterday and true to there word we got two players ,they just forgot about the quality side of it.I have said before i am always the optimist and have faith in GR to bring out the best in players so lets see what he gets out of this pair. On the Milner subject i am 100% sure he will go in January and i believe rightly so after the way he has been messed around ,Which is where i can see a problem developing,i would imagine he is going (given the chance)to try his damdest to prove GR wrong and i can see him ang Rossi playing out of there skin till January which will be great for a short term fix BUT we will be in an even worse position when they leave , and unless we spend big will struggle to match there quality.I rate Milner but he is stil to realise his potential and if a descission was made to ditch him we should have let him go ,keeping him will only end in tears . I am off now to chew on which is the worse left back Bernard or Babbayaro...Jackie

What sort of message is FS and GR sending out to the younger players at SJP and to those who may have been contemplating a move to SJP. How will this affect Milner himself, being a professinal I would expect him to just get on with it, but he must have a big doubt within him self as to his worth to the squad. FS and GR should be making a public apology to Milner and to the fans for this debacle and for the inept way in which they have conducted themselves and the clubs once good name in the handling of the so called tanfer targets. ( We are known once again as the entertainers but for a different reason nowadays) Clearly the club are in such a bad state of affairs when players are opting to sign for other lesser said clubs to ply their trade. What did we get, Sibierski a 32 year old mid fielder/forward who played 107 games and netted 15 goals, plus a young lad Rossi still untried and no better than what we already have or had in the case of Chopra. What FS and GR have failed to notice is that we have a massive problem in defence, we need two fullbacks and a proven center half. Taxi for Shepherd and Roeder please.

Milner seems to have his head screwed on for someone so young. I think he will give 110% each time he plays. I don't think he is the answer up front though. Glenn has some tough decisions to make. The best we can hope for is a mid table position in January and hope that we are still in the Carling and UEFA Cups. We need to hit a good patch and get behind the lads. Let's be positive until we have reasons to be negative. We 've only played 2 league games. Let's see where we are at after 10 games.

What a farce! It has all been said, but 4 months of close season has brought us Duff, Martins, Sibierski (who?)Rossi on loan until January; and I understand Olivier Bernard has just re-signed (one of our hardest working players first time around).

What have FS and GR been doing? I am sure that transfer dealings are much more complex than meets the eye but come on! Those clubs we would consider to be "smaller" than ours have snapped up some decent players. It seems the powers that be set their mind on several players and when they failed to get them, didn't know what to do next.

I don't believe that Milner was to be sacrificed to raise the money to buy Viduka (why would we want him anyway?). We were meant to have offered for Huth. Where was the money coming from for him? No talk of offloading Milner there. I would love to have been a fly on the wall when Roeder met Milner this morning.

We should be looking after young talent NB: GR had better play N'Zogbia or we will lose him next time Arsenal come knocking. He is one of the very few players we have who runs at defenders. He was probably our best player last season along with Shearer.

Does anyone in this club really know what they are doing? When you look at the money wasted over the past 10 years it could make you lose the will to live. Andersson, Thommason, Ferguson, Bassedas, Acuna, Cordone, Maric, Cort, Boumsong, Luque et al. Big club? Big talk more like.

The club should apologise publicly to Milner for his ill-treatment and also to the fans for the lack of ambition, foresight and the crass way they have blustered about transfer targets. Shame on them.

If G R and F S have any respect left for this club they should show it and get out now and let the takeover begin. They have fed us lies all summer [ Duff apart], treated Milner like a cow going to market and brought in a French has been in panic, then scraped the barrel even more to bring in Bernard, desparate times or what? When Boro get the upper hand in the transfer market even though they can never fill the riverside, then it is time to take a long hard look at SJP , WHICH IS SOLD OUT EVERY WEEK! The fans have been let down again, let someone else run the club, who knows how to respect the best fans in football. And who knows how to treat young players like Milner.

"James Milner is not going anywhere. He is staying with us and that's the end of the story,"

"James has done well for us in pre-season and we do not want to lose players like him.

"There has been interest in him from other Premiership clubs but he will be playing a big part for Newcastle United this season."

That was Glenn Roeder's comments on the lad less than a month ago.
This whole issue stinks of Sheperd and takes me back to the sale of Speed. I was furious when I found out Milner had been given permission to talk to Villa, he has been one of our best players so far and Nobby doesnt quite have it anymore out on the wing. When I found out he was returning to Tyneside I was relieved, but this quickly developed into anger again at the way our club could do this to one of our players. I hope the club issues a public apology regarding the matter.

The sooner Sheperd is out of the club, the sooner the circus can leave town. I feel like I'm tuning into an episode of North-Eastenders everytime I see what the club are up to. It's gonna be another rollercoaster season, let's just hope there's more ups than downs. Good luck Glenn! you're gonna need it.

I'm very pleased at Olly's return, he was easily one of the best left-backs in the Premiership when he was with us. Bye Baba!

And that's a very interesting point by Trevor - if we had £6m for Huth, then he signed for Boro, why did we need to sell Milner for £4-5m in order to sign Viduka for about £2m? Something doesn't add up...

Basically mid table and a good League Cup Run will be deemed a success by Glenn and the board. Any Sou-mess like injuries before January and we are snookered. I think Glenn is banking on Kieron Dyers come back to boost our front line. I think we should all get behind Glenn and the lads and of course keep everything we can crossed!

Aye I see your point Steve - but we're supposed to have bid for Lucas Neill, Roberth Huth and Zat Knight(!) over the past few days - so obviously we had at least a few million available from somewhere. In which case, why did we need to sell Milner for £4-5m? That suggests we were expecting to spend £5-10m on a striker - would Viduka have cost that much at 30 years old with 12 months left on his contract?! It's all very confusing...

I agree with most of what has been said and think James Milner should have an apology from G R and F S
and they should apologise to the fan for all the promises made during the close season with regard to bring in new players.
You get the impression that they are frightened to make a dission with regard to new players. Duff will be wondering why he came to United. I feel sorry for all the season ticket holders who have all paid their money I think they should get a rebait.

I doubt if calling the Milner move off was for money, more a matter of numbers being so few I guess.

Still, yet again the clowns make us the laughing stock of the game but will the new performers bring the house down against Fulham or will it end in tears and we demand our money back?

The common denominator here is FS. I'm convinced he's taken on the sole responsibility for signings. GR has clearly been undermined by his chairman with the same blatant disregard for his intelligence as FS has repeatedly shown he has for our fans. What about a couple of years back when Kluivert was signed and it was obvious to us all that Sir Bobby had no idea what the hell was going on? Just how much did Souness have in securing Owen? I seem to recall FS being very pleased with himself and not giving too much credit to anybody other than himself. And GR's earlier comments about Milner seem to prove that he was not behind the debacle of yesterday. Personally I'd rather keep Milner and have his great Auntie Nancy installed as chairman than have FS at the helm one day longer.
