Get well soon Shay

By Lee Ryder on Sep 19, 06 01:52 PM

Spare a thought for Shay Given at the moment.

United's super keeper was hurt in a pure act of bravery at West Ham and will now miss six weeks of the season after he sustained a one-centimetre tear in his bowel when he slid in for a ball with West Ham's Marlon Harewood.

There is nothing in the public domain to suggest Harewood has said sorry or plans to say sorry to Given as yet, but perhaps the Press office at West Ham should make efforts for at least the Hammers striker to pass on his best regards, even though he may not have meant to hurt the Toon keeper.

It might be an idea eh Marlon?

It wasn't to long ago that Jimmy Bullard suffered a similar horror injury on Tyneside after clashing with Scott Parker at St James' Park.

Parker's response was to twice go to the Fulham dressing room to check if Bullard was OK.

Fair enough Bullard wasn't OK but at least Parker was kind enough to check on the welfare of a fellow professional.

To be fair to Harewood he didn't have much chance to do so after the game due to the serious nature of Given's injury that required urgent treatment.

But he has had the last two days to view the incident and make some kind of acknowledgement to Given - who is still in hospital.

So far we don't know if Harewood did anything like that - and if he has we put our hands up - but an awkward silence from West Ham suggests they are prepared to merely get on with life as if nothing happened.

Given's injury isn't, thankfully, the end of the world for United with the goalkeeping great due back at the end of next month.

And in Steve Harper United and Glenn Roeder know at least there is a safe pair of hands to cover until he is back and fighting fit.

How about winning it for Shay at Anfield?

Any get well soon messages for Shay will be forwarded to the United keeper.

Having watched the incident several times i cant attatch any blame to the lad Harewood and if it had of been a young shearer going for that ball Shays injuries would be likened to a bus crash rather than a car.Shay is a big strong lad and as brave as they come so knocks are expected, sadly this one is a bit more serious, but we all know he will be back next month as the old saying goes "you cant keep a good man down". If your reading this Shay i would just like to say if it wasnt for your consistent performances over the years we would be in a sorry state. No disrespect to anyone but you have been a class above the rest of the team ,In the circus which is Newcastle you have always performend and conducted yourself in a manner which fits the shirt..I speak for everyone who supports Newcastle when i say Thanks a lot...Get well soon big man...Jackie

All the very best, Shay. God knows where we would be without your contribution over the last few years. Sadly this injury has come just when a lot of us thought we were on our way up. Fortunately we have in Steve Harper a genuinely classy replacement. Get better quickly and enjoy what we are now expecting - a win at Anfield.
