Get the ball and score a Gol!

Now the dust has settled perhaps the time has come to reflect on something Newcastle HAVE got in the shape of Giuseppe Rossi.

Providing the 19-year-old doesn’t get crocked for the Italian Under-21s against Austria in Forli tonight, Rossi is thought to be fully match fit and raring to go.

We know he can score goals and although his scoring record is spookily similar to that of a certain Michael Chopra, the American-born Italian arrives on Tyneside for his loan stint, a few years younger than Chops and with great things expected of him by his Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and the watching Italian media.

He’s already snubbed the United States national team as he bids for glory with the Italians and his goal record proves he knows where the net is.

Twenty six goals in 26 games in the reserves at Old Trafford last term made everyone stand up and take notice and he managed to transfer that form into the first team, against Barnet in Carling Cup and then Burton in the FA Cup, oh as well as a strike against Sunderland on his Premiership debut for the Red Devils at the Stadium of Light.

Chops may well be long gone but a quick comparison of his efforts for Newcastle will surely give him food for thought.

Now Rossi is looking to make the toughest step up of all and become a regular scorer in the Premiership, albeit for a few months, or at least initially.

A lot of fans have suggested bringing Rossi in on loan is only aiding Man United by grooming one of their better youngsters, but will be people be complaining if he can start banging the goals in a black and white shirt?

Rossi may well have a lot of potential, but at the moment that's all it is. Chopra always had plenty of potential and scored a lot of goals in the reserves, but he never managed to score goals in the Premiership for a variety of reasons, and is now in the Championship. Rossi has not proven himself by any means in the Premiership, which somewhat contradicts Roeder's recent vow to only sign players with Premiership experience.

I would personally prefer to see Roeder put some faith in Albert Luque and finally give him a proper run in the first team, rather than gambling an unknown quantity who belongs to one of our Premiership rivals.

We could even take a chance on Diego Tristan on a free transfer, then we could play a 4-5-1 with Ameobi/Tristan up front and any two out of Zogs/Duff/Solano/Dyer(?)/Milner/Luque (in his natural position!!) supporting from either flank.

Will people complain if Rossi scores a lot of goals - of course not.
Will people complain if Glen has commited to Alex to play Rossi in a certain number of games and he doesn't score goals - of course they will!
So what's the balance of probablity? Pre season with the support of a better team than Newcastle has Rossi failed to shine so if playing with our midfield , set up for crosses and seemingly bereft of forward passes to feet will a 5'9" player still wet ebhind the ears score goals with the 5'8" player new to the premiership? It will take a huge leap of faith to think that one will come off.
So here in the world of the "muppet" supporter, we who pay the price but are denied an opinion by most of our managers it looks bleak but hey ho! Muppet world is a world of optimism where skies are white not black and where a run of luck can change even an american italian into a geordie hero.

I have seen some very good and not so good players come and leave NUFC. My only concern is the motivation that is so obviously missing in the team. Who ever joins the Toon is entering a passionate football club and that should be reflected by the management who in my eyes sit there like Fenwicks christmas window displays, animated muppets.

Pesonally i dont buy into the theory we are doing man u favours or becoming a feeder club.We have arguably the most prolific striker in the premiership jetting out to the states for a little repair on his knee.In the past previous managers would have grabbed the cheque book the second he it the floor in Germany, but in Glen we have a shrewd player in the transfer market. It makes sense to bring in someone on loan to hold the fort untill the boy wonder recovers and lets be honest who else was available?Which brings us to the lad Rossi. The lad has a fantastic record in the mancs second string and will be chomping at the bit to prove to Fergie he can make the step up.All this can only benefit us and if he bags a few goals and helps keep us in the right half of the table untill january then great ,if he struggles then what have we lost? certainley not the 10 million that we wasted on Luque,so its a win / win situation.Who knows after running out in front of the gallowgate he may not want to go back............Getting on the subject of Chopra, the kid scored plenty of goals and was tipped for greatness (even mentioned to replace Shearer himself) but lets face it he was not that good, you may disagree but in reality he is a good squad player but wasnt going to get many starts at Newcastle. In january we will be buying a quality striker and with Martins big Shola and Owen fit again we will have a formidable strike force,so lets give the boy Rossi a big Geordie welcome and get behind Glen and the team. always the optimist Jackie

I admire your optimism Jackie but have to disagree with the alleged 'shrewdness' of this deal. We've basically prostituted ourselves publicly to a team that ten years ago was our only rival. Now we are reduced to begging them for their squad players and doing cartwheels over qualifying for the intertoto cup. I think Glenn Roeder could win us a trophy but to aid him in this he needed to be backed in the transfer market and he quite patently wasn't. Rossi could well score some goals for us but the fact of the matter is that he isn't good enough for the Man U first team yet so why should he be good enough for ours?

I agree with Jackie W, we are in a win/win situation with Rossi,he has proved his ability with Man u's second string, and somebody has to get on the end of Duffs crosses before the lad gives up completely trying to get a quality ball into the box.
Rossi and Martins could play well with each other, both have a lot to prove. Martins has to prove he is worthy of the No9 shirt and Rossi has to prove to Fergie he is mature and talented enough to be rewarded with some 1st team starts.
By the new year when Rossi goes back to Manchester and Owen is nearly back we should be fighting for a top six finish, If we can be confident enough to play well away from home.
Fergie has been shrewd enough not to let Rossi play against Man U whilst on loan. If only Robson had don that with Lua Lua he might not have had such a fun time ripping us apart when he went to Pompey.
And finally when is a Newcastle manager going to go into a Premiership season with MORE players than they had the previous season? Every manager since KK has whittled down one of the biggest premiership squads down to one of the smallest.

Rossi's record at reserve level is impressive and I have also just read Wayne Rooney's comments about him, saying he is the 'best finisher at United'. I never got excited when Rossi was signed on loan, after all he is another young striker and not someone we need. We need a target man, who is big, strong and can gel in with our style of play, Rossi won't do that at all. But I think Glenn brought Sibierski for the height and Rossi alongside suddenly becomes a good idea. I still think Rossi won't play much of a part and might still be a cover player. He might be a good finisher, But we have our current first choice strike-force of Ameobi and Martins, then we have Luque waiting, then Sibierski, and finally Rossi. He still has a long way to go in my view before getting a chance. However saying that, Glenn seems to have a liking for Rossi and he might just edge past Luque and Sibierski in the pecking order. My advice, lets see how good he is before really getting happy, and if he can really show that hunger and desire, with a few goals then we might just have found a new star. But for now, too early to say.

I have to say I can't see Martins and Rossi playing well together, nor can I see Martins and Owen playing well together - in every good strike partnership you have one big, physical player or at least a player who will drop off and link the attack and midfield, with the other striker being the poacher who feeds on service. Rossi and Martins are both goalscorers, as is Owen, so we will again end up with a gap between midfield and attack. We need a striker who will compliment either Martins, Owen or Rossi - then, and only then, will we have a functional strike partnership. Ameobi will do the job fine, but what happens when he gets injured every other week?

By the way Ian, Ferguson wasn't shrewd in not allowing Rossi to play against Man U - since the LuaLua debacle, the Premiership have forbidden loan players from playing against their parent clubs by default!
