Thank Roeder for Euro dream

Posted by Lee on September 28, 2006 12:03 PM |

It might not have the sparkle and the glamour of the Champions League but should Glenn Roeder guide Newcastle United to the UEFA Cup group stages tonight it can only be described as a minor miracle.

Too often United are a victim of their own high standards which ultimately leads to bitter disappointment come the end of the season or the end of a venture in any of the cup competitions.

But look where Roeder found United when he was asked to take over as caretaker manager last February.

Flirting with relegation to the Championship, that’s where.

What was the expecation level then?

We were a million miles away from Europe!

And look at some of the fixtures they could find themselves involved in during the group stages.

Roeder guided a team whose confidence was on the floor to the top seven of the Premiership.

And bagged an Inter’Toto Cup place, without any money to spend, without Michael Owen (unless 29 minutes at Birmingham counts) and denied Alan Shearer for the crucial final two games of the season.

He also did it without a recognised number two and should he book a place in the next stage of the UEFA Cup once more it will be without the wealth of coaches like some clubs, namely Bolton and their army of backroom staff.

Kevin Bond has come and gone and Roeder, Lee Clark and Terry McDermott are the main men as United look to march on in Europe.

Still Owen is out, Shearer has gone too.

But ultimately Roeder is the man who carries the responsibility on his shoulders as manager and at the moment he is doing that well.

Roeder hasn’t been backed in the same way that any of the men who have been there before him and you couldn’t blame him if that thought has crossed his mind since taking over in the hotseat.

The millions enjoyed by Keegan, Dalglish, Gullit, Robson and Souness are gone because the pot is more or less empty.

With a lack of coaching staff, transfer kitty and the usual spate of untimely injuries, United could go into October challenging for three cups and still in the mixer for a top six place this term – although the odds are well against United to better last season’s seventh place finish.

Who would have thought that after the shocking 3-0 drubbing at Man City in Souness’s last game in charge?

Roeder can only work with the tools he’s got and it could be said he’s doing that with some aplomb.

It might not be the Champions League or the entertainment eras of Robson or Keegan – but times have been a lot worse than they are now under Mr Roeder.

Roeder did great to get us into Europe, but while I'm sure Lee is in a majority who think Roeder has worked miracles, I'm a bit more synical. I personally thought pretty much any manager could have taken over the squad Roeder did, when he did, and got a good run of results. Roeder inherited some top quality players, many of whom had been injured for a lot of Souness' time at the club, and during our run-in we came up against a lot of teams who had nothing left to play for, and teams suffering from injuries etc. I realise you still have to beat the team that is put in front of you, but the only major tests Roeder faced were against top sides, and those sides had no difficulty whatsoever in brushing us aside. And as for the pot drying up, Freddy still managed to find more than £15 million for Roeder to spend on Duff and Martins (who is, I might add, as much of a gamble as Luque was).

I'm fully behind Roeder and he has definately done a good job, but I don't want to get carried away. We've played more than 10 competitive matches this season, and we've only played well in a couple of them. We've put in a lot of very, very poor performances already this season - mostly against poor sides. He hasn't addressed the defensive frailties and the jury is out on Martins. But it's still early in the season and there's a long way to go - hopefully including the UEFA Cup group stages. I'm sure Roeder will get the whole season to prove he is the man for the job, and I sincerely hope he does just that.

Adam, I know we spent on Duff and Martins, but taking into account all of the players that have gone, some for fees and some off the wage bill, we've hardly spent anything this season.

Not that that is surprising considering the craxy levels of spending of the past few managers.

Fair point Ian, but Souness had to do exactly the same - he spent a lot more money, but he also brought in a lot more money (Bellamy, Jenas, Robert etc). People seem to be blind to the fact that Roeder has taken exactly the same gamble on Martins as Souness took on Luque, and whereas Souness took a gamble by spending a lot on Boumsong, Roeder has taken an even bigger gamble by not signing a centre-back at all.

i know we geordies expect the earth and instant success, but really it's time for a reality check.successive managers have taken this club from the fridges of atop premier side to also rans, a lot had to do with self bloated ego and wasted millions.GR doesnt have a self bloated ego,for me hasnt wasted millions, infact duff was a great buy and martins gets better each game.the days of insytant success is gone it's time for us to be realistic and accept it's a building process, lets give glen a chance,no he's not the big name a lot crave for but he quietly gets on with his job, and for me is doing ok.
