We've got to lift it to see off the Kroon Army

Posted by Lee on September 11, 2006 1:49 PM |

It's been described as a minor miracle over in Tallinn.

The miracle is Levadia Tallinn actually getting through to the first round proper of the UEFA Cup.

The only problem is they are starting to believe in miracles after shocking Dutch outfit FC Twente and the home fans can't wait to lock horns with United.

Be warned Newcastle!

Nobody gave Levadia a hope to get beyond the Inter'Toto Cup stages but once they battled through, and then negotiated their second qualifying round tie with FC Twente, suddenly destination Tallinn looked like more than a nice little trip abroad.

And the fact is the Estonians are loving the party that much, they don't want to end, especially considering only three teams in 14 years from their country have made it to the proper stages of Europe.

They'll also be raising their game against Newcastle who are still reeling from defeats against Aston Villa and Fulham, don't forget United also failed to break down Ventspils too in the last round despite their 1-0 win in Latvia.

None of the Levadia squad can be talked about as household names (well maybe in their own their households perhaps) but that could not be the case by the time they come to St James' Park.

So maybe it is high time United make sure their reputation in Europe as a big club.

Particulary after defeat against Fulham.

Are we on the brink of a Euro shock?

Let's hope that when the Kroons are counted up after the second leg at St James' Park, they'll have had their day in the sun and we are looking forward to the group stages.

If anyone can arrange a pint of whatever Kevin Keegan gave to his players before THAT 5-0 win in Belgium against Royal Antwerp it would be much appreciated!

I think if we don't put on a convincing show against FC Gardenshed then the lynch mob will be sharpening their weapons. The folly of not strengthening the squad properly during the transfer window is already apparent and thursdays performance could well be a pointer to just how our season is going to go.

I am finding it very hard to keep an optimistic viewpoint on NU at the moment. The fact that I was not at all in favour of the GR appointment and the very weak squad compounds my pessimism. We have a lack of quality but moreover a lack of physical power and mental toughness. The fact we have to rely on a defence that individually is poor and collectively ill arranged. The midfield is lightweight but the fact we continue to punt long balls defies logic. The game at Tallyn will be tough and I can only hope they pull through because defeat could start a freefall.

if we lose this match in estonia it would probably be our most embarrasing defeat since hereford in the fa cup so i hope the lads are up for this one, this could be the match which could kick start our season if we get a big win,i know its only a small team play but wins do give us confidence going into the next game.as for the people who have given martins a bit of stick shame on you he`s only played 2 games leave the lad alone, look at peter crouch when he went to liverpool he got of to a slow start and now look at him.come on get behind the lads thought our fans were the best around, lets prove it by sticking by the lads. getting back to the uefa matches i think we will beat them 2-0 over there and 3-1 at st james

three games three points not good but there seems to much negativity arsenal are worse off give martins a bit more time he has come from a completely different league the midfield will soon gel and create things the only prob is defence why was huth and campbell not broght in baffles me i prefer taylor and ramage together they know each other well and are quality experience takes a back seat if u have self confidence as mertesacker and metzelder showed in the world cup i have my reservations about bramble and moore is too slow roeder is a good manager and i am fully confident that newcastle will come out of this hole all the best roeder

Whilst NUFC’s defeat was very disappointing, it’s still early days and I won’t get too despondent just yet. Like many others on the Message Board I think we needed to be much more active in the Transfer market, but I also understand that after signing so much dross over the years with millions thrown away on players and their over inflated wages FS has become over cautious with his spending habits.
The once tolerant Geordie fans are becoming very impatient as there has been a steady decline in fortunes over the last 10 years give or take a couple of years rallying under SBR & most people are now sick of waiting for something “good to happen.
I also notice that after the last 2 games Glenn Roeder has become a target of criticism with some suggesting he’ll be the next neck on Freddies chopping block with Mr Shearer waiting to step in if results don’t go our way in the next few games.
GR performed a minor miracle last season dragging us up to 7th and now is not the time to be calling for his head, he can’t be blamed for individual mistakes on the field that keep costing, and whether or not he had any say if Woodgate, Huth or Campbell came to SJP would be very open to debate.
As for Thursdays game I can see a very similar game to the Ventspils match - very tight, perhaps one goal either way and probably just scraping through somehow at SJP in a fortnights time. Mind you, having watched NUFC for the best part of half a century now, it would be absolutely no surprise to see them win comfortably, and then and go to West Ham and Liverpool and pick up 4 or 6 points. The enigma of the Toon eh!!
Finally I would like everyone to ease the pressure of sacking the Manager, let’s give him a fair crack, we all know there are some good players out on the park that simply aren’t gelling as a team, & believe it or not the players should be hurting as much as we are.
Cheers
Bob

Dear lee,

i think this was the first time that Roeder said " whe made 2 mistakes "
and yed did he not !!(Bramble)
does nobody see that Bramble is not up to it and never wil, listen to what
Hansen said en showed
on match of the day!! it is cristalclear for everyone to see!!
the cross came, and the only thing he has to do is stand, or on the goalside
of the striker or behind him, where is Bramble ? in front of the striker i
tell you when its picking up pace his brain can not
go to higher gear and that means no disrespect voor Bramble
has nc not have anyone in the reserve team ? And not Ramage hey is made of
the same stuff as Bramble!!
well this gonne be a season like the last 6 or 7 no good football starting
from the defence
play the ball over the ground, lots of frutrations and if anyone deserves
better then this
the faithful supporters of NEWCASTLE !!

Hello Lee

Well after the shock and the humiliation of Saturdays defeat against a poor side such as Fulham and Villa 2 weeks before, what can we look forward to on Thursday night, a possible draw would be ok. GR has to work on the defence and instil in them a good working understanding and 100% concentration for the whole game, also the forwards, I don’t know what to make of SA and OM, ok we need to give them more time, but my thoughts have never changed on SA, he is not a PL player and never will make one, one good game out of four is not good enough,
Back to Milner missing from SJP on Saturday, why? He scored for the under 21 team mid week along with a certain David Nugent, are you listening Glen Roeder, and then no sign of him, not even as a bench warmer.
A draw would be ok considering we can’t finish, or maybe we will again be on the end of a defeat, who knows with our team at present, what will be their mind set be? Who will be playing and what formation, instead of expecting nothing but a positive result as we used to, we now have to prepare ourselves for the worst.

This game is massive - let's not have another Partizan Belgrade situation! We need to go out there and give the supporters a damn good performance. Positive tactics and plenty of goals, please! I'm fed up grinding out results in "tricky" European ties - we're a much better team and we should go out there and get a resut to show it. I don't want us having to tread carefully at SJP in two weeks!

Let's be positive about this - Martins and Duff to get their first goals, Bramble to put in a solid display to boost his confidence, and what are the odds on a hat-trick of headers from Scott Parker?!
