Losing in football has never been any fun.
Losing to Middlesbrough isn't exactly the most enjoyable way to spend your afternoon either.
And losing to a side that never really looked liked they were going to win until the dying stages -with United handing the game to them on a plate - is just down right painful.
But once again for Newcastle United it was a story of what if?
What if Antoine Sibierski had kept up his hot streak by bagging early on?
And what if Oba Martins hadn't attempted the perfect goal and simply made sure when he went clean through?
And what if it hadn't been the same story in the second half when James Milner sent one flashing wide - when he should have bulged the net?
And what if Craig Moore's poor clearance hadn't allowed Boro to win the corner that allowed Yakubu to win the match with his late header?
Yes Boro had their chances but nothing that really troubled the United defence apart from when Steven Taylor was forced to hack off the line late on.
The fact is Boro didn't produce the type of performance that sliced United apart.
Toon transfer targets Jonathan Woodgate and Robert Huth did their bit for a clean sheet but didn't Newcastle make it so easy for them to grab the headlines right at the death?
United shot themselves in the foot once again.
Just like Fulham, just like Everton and just like Bolton.
Toon fans will vent their frustrations in different ways if United don't pick things up.
But they won't get a better chance to seek some solace in the forthcoming home games with Pompey in the Carling Cup and then against rock-bottom Charlton.
