Let's do the Italian job all over again - Moncur

By Lee Ryder on Nov 1, 06 09:24 PM

Bob MoncurBob Moncur has called for a repeat of yesteryear as Newcastle United prepare to to take on Palermo in Italy tomorrow night.

United trained today here in Palermo and will have their work cut out to see off the Serie A big guns.

Speaking from Milan, where Moncur stopped off on the road to Palermo, the inspirtational ex-captain reflected on some great memories during at truly special time to be a Newcastle fan.

The Toon legend skippered United to victory over Inter Milan back in the 1970/71 season and netted on Tyneside during an era when Newcastle dominated in Europe and lifted the Fairs Cup in 1969.

Moncur said today: “One of our many games in Europe we got a draw in the San Siro, it was 1-1, and Wyn Davies scored in Italy and then we beat them at St James’ Park.

We need to show the same spirt against Palermo and not take any prisoners.

“During that game the Inter goalkeeper hit the referee and was banned for two years.

“I remember after that game in Milan and we went on a trip and thought what a great place this would be to live but sadly I have never been able to afford that!

“It was a great occasion when we came here and got a positive result.

“And I just feel we have to go to Palermo confident if we are going to get anything.

However, the trip to Milan also revoked a couple of painful memories as Anderlecht fans hogged the main square in the city as their side took on the San Siro giants this evening.

Moncur added: “Seeing those purple shirts today reminded me of how bad it was to taste defeat because we lost to them cruelly.

“It was actually the Belgians that knocked us out.

“We went from two down to three up before a late goal knocked us out at St James’ Park.

“Afterwards in the dressing room I was in such a daze I didn’t realise I had blood squirting out of my ankle!

“I just told the physio to patch me up and get me home.

Tomorrow Bob’s analysis continues in Italy on matchday two of Group H when United take on the Serie A side in Sicily.

Hi Bob.
I have just seen the video part one and two, and I like your comments about the games. You are giving them the facts 100%.
Are the players these days committed 100%??
