United cash in at the Commerzbank Arena

With Lee Ryder in Frankfurt

United fans proudly clapped of their side at the Commerzbank tonight knowing their final tally of 10 points was enough to see them into the last 32 as Group H winners.

It's a far cry from the miserable looking Premiership table at the minute but this competition could yet save a depressing domestic campaign - that's if it hasn't already after another great experience in Europe.

OK, there were no goals and the injury hit Magpies were perhaps fortunate to grab a point at the end of a frantic contest but who cares?

The facts are United live to fight another day in the UEFA Cup and will avoid the Champions League big boys in the next stage.

The 1,500 Toon fans were in good voice too but they did have a battle on their hands with Eintracht's home support in great form.

But by the end the Frankfurt followers could only boo their team off with their hopes of qualification now looking all but over.

And the fact they were booing was a triumph for Glenn Roeder, Nigel Pearson and his staff.

True, United defended deep and Frankfurt missed a host of sitters.

But Steven Taylor was sheer class once again and Shay Given as alert as ever to drive the side to a draw.

Yet the Geordies could have been celebrating a win had Emre finished when he went clean through.

The scarves, though, were still waving by the end.

And everyone in black and white has to be chuffed after a good night's work here in Germany.
