Time to make it Ski Saturday for Sibi

Posted by Lee on November 10, 2006 9:54 AM |

What price Antoine Sibierski netting the winner at Man City tomorrow?

Make no bones about it the Frenchman was laughed out of Eastlands when he left to sign for Newcastle.

Indeed Sibierski's exit at City resulted in websites, phone-ins and letters pages being bombarded with ridicule at Newcastle's so called stupidity to sign a player that couldn't even get a game for Stuart Pearce's side.

One Man City follower said: "As a Man City fan I'm amazed that anyone should want to sign Sibierski.

“No pace, no touch and a 6ft- something player who can't head a ball.

Indeed how silly of us but wait a minute Sibi - nicknamed 50p head at City - obviously hasn't read the script.

He certainly headed the ball against Watford and Tallinn didn't he? And it was actually between those three big white pieces of wood with the net on the back too!

There is no better situation for a man to be in than to be underestimated - or better still rejected.

And it's a position Sibierski is revelling in.

Nobody is daft enough on Tyneside to call Sibi a world class act and nobody is calling him one either.

But after taking advantage of the extremely low expecation levels on his shoulders, Sibierski has weighed in with some crucial goals in his short time at United - not bad considering his position is meant to be a ball winning midfield man.

And it remains to be seen just how crucial his goals to date will turn out to be at the end of the season.

Sibi is a man who is just happy to be playing for a side he regards as a big club and happy to have a second chance at life in the Premiership.

He took no time at all to get going against the not so mighty but gritty Levadia Tallinn and was on cue to net the winner in Estonia on his debut.

And where would United have been without his strike when Fenerbahce came to Toon in the UEFA Cup as Newcastle won by the slenderest of threads against the feisty Turkish unit?

At Watford it's certainly true that he could have had a hat-trick against the Hornets but he still popped up with another header to get the night started in the right fashion.

Is it fair to say Sibi has already exceeded the United's fans expectations?

And even though life is still pretty miserable at Newcastle and nobody is trying to paint a false picture on Tyneside, at least Sibierski represents somebody who is trying their heart out.

Isn't that exactly what Newcastle need at the moment?

Three goals in five starts is a decent tally, albeit all of his goals coming in the cups - but Man City haven't exactly faired better since he's gone with Georgios Samaras chalking up the same tally.

Perhaps the Frenchman has been waiting to net his first goal for Glenn Roeder at his old club Man City.

It's a goal the Toon Army would love to see and the only way to answer your critics is on the pitch.

Take your chance Sibi.

i have not commented on the blog for a few weeks as i was struggling to add anything constructive to the comments posted . But i won the lottery on wed night and i am now in a much more positive mood ,granted it was only a tenner but a win is a win. This is the same outlook we need to adopt at newcastle, saturdays jolly to the land of the mullets is not going to be for the faint hearted, but we need to come home saturday afternoon with all three points ,how we achieve this doesnt matter and IF Glen has any passion in his laid back frame he needs to instill this in to the squad ,,Forget the fact that surviving a life threatning illnes is a wake up call to view life in a new perspective this is Newcastle united and bad heads take second place .I personally cant see the bloke being invited to the new years party but for now he really needs to roll his sleeves up and do the job he is employed to do with all the enthusiasm of a dog in a butchers fridge. On the plus side Dyer is back and i for one cant wait to see him tearing through the mancs back line and setting up the winner for big Sib...shame we didnt have a proper striker to finnish it off but never mind .Still in three cups injuries starting to clear and three points at the weekend and it will be like winning the lotterey again...Jackie

"The people who rubbished his signing will probably feel a little bit stupid now."

No Glenn I do not feel stupid, thanks for that. I personally ridiculed the signing because it lacked ambition and reeked of desperation. Nothing has changed my views in that respect.

Sibierski has, however, done tremendously well for us and he is one of our most important players at the moment. I hope he does get another goal at Man City, and I hope Dyer plays because I can see him linking up well with Sibierski - a bit like Bellamy and Shearer, when Bellamy was Shearer's legs! Either way, Roeder has several options up front and I sincerely hope he doesn't choose to play Duff and Rossi again, because everyone can see that that combination just doesn't work.

H Lee.It was a big help for Sibs to add his goals when we badly needed them
and to be fair he does not deserve the battering he got from City fans, but
if we are absolutely honest the tables do not lie and Sibs and a few more of
the current crop are never going to keep us in the Premiership. Facts dont
lie, I have been screaming out this message since the end of last season, if
you cant score goals you cant win games. All the coaching in the world is
not going to turn our shot shy team into natural born predators in front of
goal.forget we have not got a terrific defence, We have not been good at
defending since the Keegan era, when at least in those times we were likely
to score more than we conceded. The fault lies in the mega amounts of money
we have spent on light weight middle park and front merchants over the past
few seasons who are not premiership class or standard when it comes to
scoring goals. Lets look what we have in the camp starting with Duff, £5
million pounds,an appalling goal scoring record, fiddles about for an
eternity giving covering defenders all the time in the world to cover and
mark, cant score from six yards with his right foot, and very easily knocked
of the ball by towering defenders,He is lightweight to the extreme, For
Martins just ditto duff same problems,Rossi should never even be judged
,nice lad but not ours and needs time to make it. Ameobi ------ Just dont
give me the party line that he was not fit against City, he never has been
fit and even if he was ,he cant hold the ball up,it bounces off him with
alarming regularity ,he cant even get rid of the ball before it bounces off
him and he has no vision, In the air despite height and so called strength
he has no idea how to direct a header, and again even if he wins it cleanly
it goes to the opposition far more than it comes to us, Solano legs are now
gone, cant go past any one and premier days are numbered. Albert Luque, has
class but slow and totally lacking in confidence, However I think GR has not
helped his cause. Every picture tells a story Lee and the fact is we look
disjointed, have no midfield craft, two useless fullbacks in Carr and
Babyaro and score goals from midfield or upfront.Managers and coaches get
phenomenal salaries by any ones standards today and if I can see that is
where we are hugely deficient ,then why cant they. I have yet to hear any
one tell me I am wrong. Remember the Mackems went down for the same reasons
last year ,they also could not score goals. I love Newcastle Lee and this is
really hurting. The only plusses we have are Taylor, Ramage, Milner and
Zoggy { whose form has also suffered under GR } and of course Given and
Krul. We need some one to see this and sort it fast, not sure if GR can. I
have a very bad feeling about this season and its getting worse.
