Brum deal for Toon in FA Cup draw

Posted by Lee on December 3, 2006 3:52 PM |

Well our cup fighting spirit now looks set to be put well and truly to the test when we travel to Birmingham City in the FA Cup third round next month.

St Andrews is of course the home of Steve Bruce and their isn't much love lost between the two sides.

Some League Cup victories for the Blues a few years back make this an awkward venue for United but Glenn Roeder's side did send them down to the Championship on the penultimate game of last season.

It also means a return to the Midlands for Nicky Butt who would have been wearing a blue shirt had Newcastle not inflicted relegation on them last term.

And it also gives Geordie, well that fella from Corbridge, Steve Bruce the chance of ending hopes of Newcastle adding to their six strong FA Cup tally.

There haven't been too many talking points for Newcastle but John Motson didn't get the tie he wanted in the cup with the Beeb star keeping his fingers crossed for a re-run of Hereford-Newcastle.

But play fair Motty we've had a belly full of that tie and we get it rammed down our throats every year on third round day or when we play inferior opponents, Stevenage, Yeading and Cheltenham certainly come to mind.

Even Ricky George turned up at Whaddon Road hoping for a shock last year against the Robins!

Go and pick on somebody else!

Talking of having a pop at Newcastle, what about Jose Mourinho moaning at the postponement of the game the other day.

Mourinho is actually good for the game in my view.

He's stopped the dominance of the title between Arsenal and Man United and although he has spent a lot of money at the Bridge he did prove he could win trophies with less coin at Porto a few years only winning the Champions League no less.

But the fact the Premiership clash was postponed is by the by.

We never win at Chelsea anyway!

And with the Blues playing Levski Sofia on Tuesday it benefits them just as much.

He didn't moan at the time so why is he moaning now?

Perhaps he should have done some Christmas shopping instead like the rest of us did!

Well it aint going to be easy.
Chelsea in the Carling Cup and now the revitalised Brummies in the FA Cup.
Ian may not want to think about cup runs but in our current poor financial state they are manna from heaven.
What's wrong with winning games no matter what competition?
Onward and upward in the league, two cups for us, Chelsea for bakruptcy and an end to Xmas shopping. It all looks good to me.

Adopted Geordie wrote...

It had been a long Sunday at Geordie Towers. Whitaker and I had been hunting all day in the lower meadow, fuelled only by a hollowed-out drinking cane we had filled with buckfast. I retired, happy and contented, to the West Wing, for cigars, port and the FA Cup Third Round draw.

I watched two of Britain's finest pugilists pull the balls out of the hat. And what a fine job they did, too. Liverpool v Arsenal, Man Utd v Villa and Chelsea v Macclesfield. Great ties in the tradition of the Third Round of the Cup.

But then - shock, horror, disaster. The toon were drawn against the pie eaters of the West Midlands. Awful.
Now, I'm not a snob, oh no. But there's no way I could take the Rolls, the Aston or even the Lamborghini to Birmingham. My father did have a nice car factory in Birmingham, but then he closed Rover to buy another yacht and settle some debts at Spearmint Rhino.

It's just that, Birmingham is awful. Culture is having your tattoos spelt correctly and wrapping your meat pie in some bread, while your other hand greedily clutches a mug of Bovril. It's simply not the done thing.

However, not that our form has recently been the done thing either. That said, though, I suspect we will have too much for Birmingham. I also suspect we may have a really good cup run this year, which may in some way make up for our poor Premiership form. Too good to go down, aren't we? I think so. However, Whitaker isn't so sure. He has recently taken to wandering aimlessly around the grounds at night, howling at the moon. I fear an unsuccessful trip to Birmingham may tip him over the edge.

More to come….
