UNITED MUST AVOID CARLING HANGOVER TONIGHT
So here we are at the last eight stage of a competition that is there for the taking - if we can get past Chelsea.
Down the years United have wasted the chance to win the League Cup in the many different formats it has been played under and of course the many different names.
Now we go into this Carling Cup quarter-final tie with whole country looking on us.
And against a team who have the competition at the foot of their priority list.
United's form of late has been very promising with only a narrow defeat at Chelsea the only blot in the copy book.
Injuries mean that United don't have much choice in the team they put out but for the Blues, well, they could name any one of three starting XIs and still come away with a result.
Which is why Newcastle must play to their strengths tonight and make the most of Antoine Sibierski's sparkling cup form and Oba Martins current goalscoring spree.
Others who will have a point to prove against their old club are Damien Duff and Scott Parker.
But with a possible two-legged semi-final clash against Wycombe awaiting in the next round, Newcastle might never have a better chance to win a competition that has eluded them for all the wrong reasons down the years.
Take your chance lads.
