UNITED MUST AVOID CARLING HANGOVER TONIGHT

So here we are at the last eight stage of a competition that is there for the taking - if we can get past Chelsea.

Down the years United have wasted the chance to win the League Cup in the many different formats it has been played under and of course the many different names.

Now we go into this Carling Cup quarter-final tie with whole country looking on us.

And against a team who have the competition at the foot of their priority list.

United's form of late has been very promising with only a narrow defeat at Chelsea the only blot in the copy book.

Injuries mean that United don't have much choice in the team they put out but for the Blues, well, they could name any one of three starting XIs and still come away with a result.

Which is why Newcastle must play to their strengths tonight and make the most of Antoine Sibierski's sparkling cup form and Oba Martins current goalscoring spree.

Others who will have a point to prove against their old club are Damien Duff and Scott Parker.

But with a possible two-legged semi-final clash against Wycombe awaiting in the next round, Newcastle might never have a better chance to win a competition that has eluded them for all the wrong reasons down the years.

Take your chance lads.

Well can you believe it, Chelsea did it again. Why oh why did GR not play a more attacking team from the onset, yes we snuffed out their midfield which obviously nullified there so called attack. But we should have had the courage to really go for it, yes Oba hit the bar and what I seen on tele it was over the line even if only by millimetres. The other sorry state was the ref in allowing Chelsea to take the free kick from an area better suited to score, and let us not forget Drogba also pushed Sibereski in the penalty box with about 5 minutes to go.
You should have heard the comments from Terry Payne who is a TV pundit out here in South Africa, I seen the match live and it was the world cup allover again with the Russian linesman giving England the goal....unlucky Newcastle no goal. He was also adamant the Newcastle should have took a more positive approach to the game for us to have any chance of winning.
In closing what is going on with these so called takeover bids is it going to happen or not, I think I prefer the current management as they are home grown but the additional money for new players would be nice.
Cheers Ian

Newcastle should keep faith with the present youngsters. Glen Roeder should only look for an experienxce striker and two loan deals till summer. he is building a solid base for the future of the club.
