David EdgarOK, it wasn't Howay 5-0, and it was no where near the superb 4-3 win the last time we actually beat Man United - but it was still sweet as a nut.

Man United fans from far and very wide of course will probably snigger at the fact Newcastle fans were so happy with a point.

But given the fact that Newcastle are playing raw teenagers and still picking up points makes this a bit of a moral victory of sorts.

And if the scorchers scored by James Milner and David Edgar weren't enough to heat up a chilly St James' Park the general fighting spirit that gushed from the team throughout suggested there is still much more to come from a team that just keeps bouncing back.

Some people say that United didn't play too badly at Everton in the last game of 2006 but 3-0 at Goodison Park and Phil Neville scoring from outside the box is nobody's idea of fun on a Saturday afternoon.

Therefore it was great to see Glenn Roeder gee up his troops against the team that are top of the table.

Milner's strike is a goal of the month contender already and Edgar's deflected effort after Paul Scholes had edged the Mancs in front showed he has no fear.

How many senior players would even think about shooting from there?

The position in the table is still far from perfect, with four points from 12 over Christmas below the set target for Newcastle.

But they still start the year with more points than Aston Villa and Martin O'Neill, who at one point were deamed to be having a wonderful season.

However, as Newcastle start 2007 with 12 in the treatment room how much more can we really expect from them at the moment?

Man U was a great point and great way to start the year.

A magnificent display by our kids and old fella in defense. Great scrapping from midfield to support them and Sib battled bravely up front. Well done to all 10 who played - to the man who is supposed to be showing the premiership how to score goals were you on the pitch?

Hi Lee, Great result from the lads on Sunday. My thoughts-------- Taylor was
superb, Milner as well, Solano continues to shine at right back.Huntingdon
looks a real prospect in his more familiar position at central
defence.,Edgar performed really well and played Ronaldo that well he soon
switched wings. The more these young lads perform the better they get. I
would not be in too great a hurry if I was Glen to spend millions on
defenders, Ramage, Taylor, Huntingdon and Edgar will do for me, Glen has to
be pleased with the way the Academy has turned 0ut these young stars, please
dont anybody tell me you cant have so many youngsters in your team because a
few years ago Alex Ferguson did just that and look what they produced for
Manchester United. The points that concern are Martins ,I know he has scored
a few goals of late but his lack of awareness troubles me, He always gets
caught in possession trying to dribble the ball around and ends up on the
floor, He needs to wise up and pass and run more, also Sibierski -----
Definitely not a header of the ball no matter what any one says, note the
great opportunity he had yesterday to score with a header and what does he
do? The Ameobi trick and heads it straight towards the keeper, either side
and it would have been a goal,We know where a Shearer or Ferdinand would
have put it. I think Glen has not much cause for concern at the back, give
these lads half a season and we just might have the best back four we have
had in a long time. I know they will make mistakes but they are worth
persevering with, They are young, hungry, and very much demonstrate a desire
to play for Newcastle United. My one worry is Glen will be afraid to
persevere and bring back the so called seniors who have given us nothing
this season. Do you really think the score would have been the same with
Carr, Babayaro, Bramble, and Moore yesterday? I certainly dont. The young
boys have tenacity, passion, legs and lungs to run all day and they proved
that yesterday. I know people will point to experience but how else do they
get it if not by playing. They showed no fear in facing the likes of Rooney,
Giggs and Ronaldo and also showed they are not afraid to have a go hence the
goal from young Edgar on his home debut. In conclusion we dont need expensive
defenders who will not give what these kids can give, what we do need is
another front man who is a clinical finisher, not another foreign misfit
costing millions,we lack muscle, and penalty box no-how up front. Martins
must surely become better with a goal scoring partner,I know Michael Owen is
coming back sometime but we would always have that option, Another Albert
Bonnet rifling 15 to 20 goals a season would make this team very formidable
indeed. I know Glen and co. are not going to listen to my ranting, but hey I
was brought up on Milburn, Mitchell, Robledo, Eastham, Allchurch,White,The
mighty Wyn,Supermac, Beardsley, Keegan, Gazza, Jinky Jim, Pop Robson,Tony
Green and Terry Hibbert to name but a few. Think that at least qualifies me
as a supporter. I also live in Wirral Merseyside and have to travel a near
380 mile round trip just to see the lads, plus break the bank to afford my
season ticket. To save another embarrassing expensive defender purchase and
go more into debt ,I would ask Glen please buy a experienced front man if he
can even if it costs as I feel our youngsters are more than capable at the
back, but we need to score more goals and goals win matches.I will shut up
now Lee because I could talk about my beloved Newcastle for ever. Happy new
year. Ray Wilson
