Name on the trophy?

Posted by Lee on January 5, 2007 9:27 AM |

This is what it's all about!

The FA Cup third round and all of the cliches that go with it.

Banana skin tie, each round as it comes, a great leveller, giantkilling act and name on the trophy.

At Birmingham tomorrow some of them are sure to be wheeled out at St Andrews.

And awaiting Newcastle is a shocking surface that is just about to be ripped up for a new pitch - but only after Glenn Roeder's boys have played this epic tie.

United travel to the Championship leaders hit by injury but on a high after the 2-2 draw with Man United.

It's a fair bet that we'd all take 2-2 once more against Steve Bruce's side but defeat to the Brummies is unthinkable.

It's all set up for what many will deem a shock, different divisions, muddy pitch, huge crowd, a massive injury crisis and of course a Geordie in charge of the opposition.

Throw into the pot that United actually sent Birmingham down on the penultimate day of the season, Nicky Butt is back at the club where he was on loan last term and returning ex-Aston Villa players Nobby Solano and James Milner are set for a rocky ride, it all makes for some contest.

But let's hope that when the full classified check goes through on final score tomorrow, United won't be one of the teams that have been giantkilled.

As you said Lee It would be nice to see a positive result for us at 5pm on Saturday, but maybe a draw will be ok also. After the way the team played against Man U we are in with a good shout of progressing, that is if GR plays his same side, but as we have read that Bramble may be ready and maybe one more of the duffers he likes to play at the back, we may be in for a rocky ride. GR has been fortunate in the injuries of late as it has meant he has had to draft in the young lads and boy what a difference they have made, they, like us know what it means to pull on the B&W shirt, Pride, Passion, Love and Commitment, Ok these lads were at fault for certain goals and will make more mistakes in other games but that is the learning curve we all venture while learning our trades, but they never put their heads down or gave up the chase and got the just rewards with a great goal to take a point out the game. If Peter Ramage had been fit we could have pushed Nobby forward and that would have been the youngest back four in the PL. I think GR and FS should look at the nucleus of young players we have and sign them all to long term contracts and then bannish all this journalistic talk of getting rid of certain young stars we have, instead he should be trying to off load the dead wood and we have a forest full of it.

Hi Lee could not agree more with the previous callers comments above. Yhis is the feedback you get from all you talk to regarding the team. The thing is if we can all see it how come GR cant? I hope he sticks with the lads who did so well against Man U. We wernt really outplayed were we? and whilst its true to say they could have scored more goals its also true to say so could we so a draw was probably a fair result. If GR plays Bramble and Babayaro tomorrow I would say we have had it,if he plays the kids we stand a chance because they fear no one. He needs to realise here is a back four that could match the old Arsenal one in a couple of years,if he does not play them then we will never get there and GR has lost a golden opportunity to at last take this club out of the doldrums. Fingers crossed against Brum.

Here we go again, its all Titus's fault. What rubbish some people spout.
Any team at the top of the championship will threaten a team hovering above the relegation zone in the premiership. Why are we so low in the league? Not because of Titus or any defense but because we dont score goals. Try looking at the facts and not repeating the Titus mantra.
And there will lie our problem today. If they score can we reply. Can Martins do what he hasn't done for the majority of the season so far and score. That, I think , will be the decider in what will be a hard and tight game.

Lee, Can't agree with Oxboy, The times we lost when Bramble, Carr and Babyaro played and by the amount of goals conceded far out weigh the times when they were missing. And why did we lose, "Because we leaked goals" The mantra Oxboy should be reading, is a team should be built from a strong and consistant defence, granted something we do not have at present, but over the past couple of months you can see the makings of one, also the issue of scoring goals has always been there for the last 2 seasons and has, along with the defence been debated by all and sundry and lost on deaf ears within the corridors of power at SJP, so yes Oxboy i agree with you on the forward situation and i am not fully convinced that Martins is the answer, we will have to wait and see who if any GR and FS bring in.

Lee's reply: The kids made a couple of mistakes at Birmingham which you can only expect from them.
But it has to be said all three of the above mentioned have also made errors this season too.
I think you generally see more passion from the kids especially the home grown products
