No need to go Oba the top

Posted by Lee on February 7, 2007 2:33 PM |

Oba Martins' no show in the Nigeria v Ghana game at Brentford's Griffin Park last night was explained today after uncertainty surrounded exactly where the player was.

Reports coming from Nigeria suggested that Martins had been back in Lagos to bring his sick mother back to Tyneside and this morning Glenn Roeder confirmed this to the Chronicle to clear the matter up.

The Nigerian FA were thought to be far from happy from the player's absence but they appear to be for good reasons.

After all it was only a friendly at a League One ground!

Nigeria and Ghana fans have been building the game in London last night up as a grudge match and the unofficial African Cup of Nations final.

Any game between two rival countries has plenty of examples of crunch tackles, England-Scotland, Holland-Germany and even Mexico-USA so Nigeria-Ghana is no different.

Therefore it might just have been a blessing in disguise Martins missed out.

And with the player back in Newcastle today training for the Liverpool game it has to be said, the importance of his presence against the Merseysiders is much more important than a kickabout at Brentford.

Let's hope that he can add to his 11 goals already on Saturday.

Welcome home Oba.

oxboy has had - the trots, headache, trapped his toe in the door, fell off a wall, fell over a wall, vomiting, mumps and many other excuses in notes explaining absence from school but never, never ever had he to go see his mum.

How nice it is to see that a player not only wants to live up here but wants his family with him.

Remember Gullit?

No visiting schools, hospitals or doing his bit for the fans, he was at home in Amsterdam.

Good for you, Oba. One day you may achieve the accolade that Pavel did. 'Oba's a Geordie'.
