He's Turk of the Toon once again!

Posted by Lee on March 7, 2007 11:39 AM |

You were probably nursing a big hangover at the time and the Newcastle United treatment room was bursting at the seams.

But believe it or not the last time Emre pulled on a black and white shirt was the clash with Manchester United on New Years Day.

Now three months later, the little Turk is back in the fold.

And for many it's a welcome boost.

For not only has Emre had to face trial by the media due to the complaints made after an alleged verbal volley at Goodison Park in United's last game of 2006, the Turkish international ace has also been hampered by a calf injury.

Emre, though, will surely be just glad to get out on to the field and play some football even though he faces an FA commission next Monday on a charge of racial abuse for his part in the brawl at Goodison.

And knowing Emre's explosive personality there is every chance he will be back on the scene with a real bang against AZ Alkmaar.

He hasn't scored too many for United but the ones he has scored have been right from the top drawer and he's also one of the main playmakers at the club.

United have lacked the flair on offer by the ex-Inter Milan and will need some of it to unlock the back four of AZ with many people feeling that Nicky Butt and Scott Parker aren't suited.

That remains up for debate of course because the other side of the coin is that Parker can get forward allowing Butt to sit in front of the back four.

But once again with Emre back in the picture Glenn Roeder now has options again.

Can Emre cover himself in glory?

Whether or not Emre returns against Alkmaar or not, makes little difference to the current NUFC set up.I would say that the majority of NUFC's current support is now made up of 1992 onwards. This is not meant as any form of criticism to pre '92 supporters.Between 92-96 we were all treated to exciting, breathtaking, & can't wait for the next installment of football. To be honest many have renewed their season tickets year on year on the expectation of those years returning. Apart from a few -- and I mean a few exciting days (under SBR)the last 10 years has been utterly abysmal and very disappointing. Ultimately the buck must stop at the Chairman but his record has been well documented in this region.Emre's return may put a bit more balance into a very disjointed team but we're clutching at straws if we think his return is about to lead us out of the doldrums.

I think Roeder is slightly lucky this week as Butt is suspended for this game means that Scotty Parker can sit in the defensive role (i personally think he suits this role better than going forward) and Emre can be the one going forward.

I think we have really missed emre. I don't think i've ever seen a flair player that has as much skill as he does but he still tracks back and can certainly tackle. His game is perfectly suited for Europe and boy will we need him as AZ Alkmaar are going to be a massive test - i just hope the fans turn up and really roar the lads on as over the 2 legs it will be a fantastic achievement if we get through and having the away leg 2nd is a massive disadvantage,

As for who do you pick when emre, parker and butt are all back fit - thats a whole new blog all together

Newcastle have sorely missed Emre's presence over the last couple of months. Emre is the only player at the club with the vision, creativity and passing ability to break down defences. The debate about Newcastle's best midfield partnership is an interesting one. Newcastle's two best performances this season, against Reading at home and Blackburn away, coincided with Emre and Butt playing in midfield together. Parker is a journeyman footballer. His lack of ability on the ball severly hampers Newcastle's ability to play attacking football. Statistically, Newcastle's win rate with Parker in the side is around 37%. Without Parker in the side it is up around 68%. Statistics never lie! Alan Curbishly knew Parker was not good enough (the 11 million Chelsea paid was far too good to turn down), Jose Mourinho to realised Parker was not good enough. Only Graeme Souness, Glen Roeder and the majority of Newcastle fans have failed to see Parker vast limitations. Things will only begin to improve when Parker is removed from the starting 11.

A fully fit Emre would make a difference tonight but he hasnt played for almost 3 months and must have other issues on his mind at present so his inclusion tonight at best is a massive gamble and personally too much of a risk in a game that could decide our season.
And in response to earlier comments (i have to point out that i am not freddie shepherds greatest fan) but he has backed manager after manager financially all to no avail.
The blame lies firmly with players and managers who requested their services and that simply dont perform or are blatantly not good enough to wear the black n white.
Aiming all the critism at Shepherd is all to easy after all do we want to return to those wonderful days of the McKeag family who took us to the brink of the old division 3 selling any talent we got along the way.The Hall Family and Shepherd changed that,no one complained when we signed Shearer or latterly
Owen true world class players perhaps plastic fans would prefer standards to return to George Reilly and Billy Whitehurst.

We all know that Emre can play. He is like the player that wants to keep the control or posession of his position in his team's favor. Parker can play defense and lead and Butt is an experienced winner. Man U are no second rate team as well as Inter and Chelsea. I personally think Emre has the talent to make plays. He has proven that not too many defenders one on one can cover him. Roeder doing a class job and first rate politically, has a solid center mid-field that he can work to his advantage next year. Football starting line-ups change like the wind. To have those 3 is a big advantage. Especially Emre.
