Lee Ryder reports from Alkmaar
Actually this was worse than Sporting Lisbon.
We attacked in Portugal two years ago.
This time we just stood their like tins of milk and let AZ Alkmaar attack at will.
And although Scott Parker's 'goal' should have sent us through we were left wanting because we attacked when we were 2-0 down on a night we went into in control.
Yes - those away goals knocked us out of Europe.
United lacked heart and punch in Holland.
We weren't at the races and the 1,000 fans who went over deserve a refund.
Once again, like Lisbon, this is a trophy we could have won.
Another season without silverware, that's 39 years now.
The Toon Army are gutted and looking for answers but in all honesty at least the players came out and faced the Press tonight.
It's not much consolation but the look in the eye of Nobby Solano and Kieron Dyer suggested they were totally as gutted as the next man on Tyneside - they know they blew it.
So nothing new there, but nine games left to play for and another crack at this crazy tournament.
However, it's going to take a monumental effort now isn't it?
