Snooze fest at St James' Park

It was described as instantly forgettable by some in the end but it will certainly be remembered if Newcastle United fail to clinch a place in Europe this season.

True, in 11th place with nine games left, hopes are fading fast of making either the UEFA or Intertoto Cup via the Premiership but the question is, do United deserve to be in Europe next term if they serve up performances like at Wigan and even Boro on Saturday?

At Wigan, United failed to convert and it was the same story against boring Boro.

The only difference being United created less chances!

This was a home game and Newcastle United should be beating the likes of Boro, below them in the table and below them in the expectation stakes.

But the fact that Boro players were more or less celebrating a point shows they got what they came for - a draw and a boring one at that.

James Milner was unlucky to hit the bar while Oba Martins also missed a decent one on one in the first half and apart from Scott Parker's late header that was pretty much all of there was to write home about.

And boring Boro?

Well they created hardly anything at all and were about as much fun as watching paint dry in the rain.

The sooner Newcastle get a win on the board, hopefully in Europe against AZ Alkmaar, the better to get this disappointing affair out of our systems.

And as far as the Premiership is concerned, failure to beat Charlton in the next Premiership game in London will all but wipe out hopes of European qualification unless like last term Newcastle can produce title winning form.

On this evidence, it looks doubtful.

was there a derby game on Saturday? I saw a couple of teams give a very negative performance that was a pathetic excuse for a premiership game at SJP. Boro are a joke to watch at the best of times, but we sunk to their level and put in a performance that was in keeping with the Wigan game. Come on lads , do you think supporters want to see that sort of display each week? I loved the Shay Givens comment, he praised the back 4 for keeping out Boro's strikers! What strikers? they came for a draw and got one, by the way, one man who stood out and made it look easy was the the one we should have signed back in the summer.... Jonathan Woodgate, that summed it up. Hurry back Michael Owen, we need all the help we can get.

Managed to get to a couple of games during my 3 weeks at home and enjoyed myself, back to work now and had to settled to watching the Toon/Boro game on TV out here, and what a awful game it was, we were as bad as Boro and looked anything but PL status, god help us on Thursday night if we turn up in that frame of mind, never thought i would say this but i am really looking forward to the end of this miserable season, what with the playing standard and then all the lies and deceit coming out of SJP i will be glad to see the back of it.

I wrote on here some time ago about NUFC going out of the UEFA cup at the last 16 stage or at best the 1/4 finals. This prediction will be realised in the next week or so as Alkmaar will remove us from the competition -- no doubt whatsoever. The recent abysmal performances followed by distorted reporting in the local Evening Paper -- why do some journalists try to drive up abject performances ? The supporters are not stupid and most can see what sort of performances are being dished out on a more than regular basis. It's also obvious to most that although Glenn seems to be a decent guy he's not what we need as an inspiration. Unfortunately he comes over as bland and tedious, which is exactly what we're getting on the pitch -- add directionless to that. This season needs to be written off and the club washed clean from top to bottom before next season -- if the Chairman survives, thats his job -- so we'll be OK there then !!

I am amazed at some of the comments above. Like them, I hope, I am present at every home game and some away games and unlike the Boo Boys on Saturday will never boo our team however abject the performance.

I get the impression the people above probably were not at the game as the game I saw was disappointing and not disasterous. Our team had two people playing out of position, Nobby and Taylor, one just returning after weeks off, N'Zogbia and one still recovering from influenza, Dyer. Not one player could be blamed for lack of effort and three close efforts could well have been goals on another day. Also a clean sheet was finally achieved by our much maligned defence.

To call for the removal of Chairman & Manager at this stage is only for those who want instant glory. Those fans remind me of those awful Man U supporters who only follow success. Let them criticise if they so wish but let us support a team that is ours not a concoction of bought in foreign players. NEVER boo your own team however bad you perceive that they are. And NEVER criticise your team manager without giving him a fair chance with a full and fit team

Interesting comment from Lee above, or was it below, regarding "those who want instant glory".
Oh dear, how I laughed. I've supported the toon for 46 years now, recently called a plastic supporter in these very columns but to hear toon supporters called chasers of instant glory is the best one I've heard for a while. Cup glory in the early 50's, fairs cup in 69 and now the demand for instant success!!
One thing we have had a surplus of in recent years is the promise of jam tomorrow and the wasting of huge amounts of money at our expense ... instant success, I'm still laughing..... oh yes just remembered - the intertoto cup 2007- ho ho ho!
