Not for the first time this season United messed up again in shocking fashion against a team they should have claimed three home points from in Manchester City.
In the same style we screwed up badly against Fulham, Sheffield United, Bolton and the bore draw with Middlesbrough - more points were tossed down the gutter.
On Friday I said: "Surely we can beat Man City"
How wrong I was!
Man City came to St James' Park to frustrate and get men behind the ball but surely that is no excuse - when we try that on the road we invite pressure and lose the game anyway - there is no hiding place - it was awful.
And even with nine minutes left at 0-0 you just got that sinking feeling again....
Emile Mpenza had already cracked the bar in the first half but waited patiently for a gift wrapped moment and took his chance to win the game for City.
A turbulent run of injuries is also now over and we can't even talk about what might have been.
Apart from Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi, this is the best pool of players available and they weren't good enough.
On the pitch were players good enough to defend against a relegation haunted team, players to create and players to finish - none of them did their job.
Yes the firepower of Owen would change a few things but in Oba Martins, Kieron Dyer and Damien Duff, there are supposed to be goals elsewhere in this team.
The sound of home fans chanting the name of James Milner rubber stamped the fact the natives are restless but then again we all know that's been the case for a long time.
The season is as good as written off by most fans so perhaps it's time to give the likes of Andy Carroll, Charles N'Zogbia, Peter Ramage and even Kazenga Lualua a run in the team.
The way we are feeling at the moment though even that is going to struggle to put a smile on the faces of some.
And the sooner United reach 40-43 points the better.
It's been a long season and it's not over yet though!
We haven't been anywhere near as bad as Sunderland in their poor efforts in the Premiership and we probably won't be going down.
Yet it's painful enough to see a team we all expect so much to be pushing for the top four to lose to a bunch of cloggers like Man City and fail to finish of such lightweight sides at SJP - a place where we used to dust aside the Arsenals, Liverpools, Man Uniteds and Chelseas of the world at a canter.
Not for the first time this year, we feel punch drunk.
Some have even given up on getting wound up by the situation judging by the mass walk out after Emile Mpenza's goal.
Heaven knows what waits in store at Sheffield United next week.
Another painful defeat at the hands of Neil Warnock perhaps?
Where we go from here is anyone's guess.
