Face it United, you were terrible

Posted by Lee on April 1, 2007 12:00 AM |

Not for the first time this season United messed up again in shocking fashion against a team they should have claimed three home points from in Manchester City.

In the same style we screwed up badly against Fulham, Sheffield United, Bolton and the bore draw with Middlesbrough - more points were tossed down the gutter.

On Friday I said: "Surely we can beat Man City"

How wrong I was!

Man City came to St James' Park to frustrate and get men behind the ball but surely that is no excuse - when we try that on the road we invite pressure and lose the game anyway - there is no hiding place - it was awful.

And even with nine minutes left at 0-0 you just got that sinking feeling again....

Emile Mpenza had already cracked the bar in the first half but waited patiently for a gift wrapped moment and took his chance to win the game for City.

A turbulent run of injuries is also now over and we can't even talk about what might have been.

Apart from Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi, this is the best pool of players available and they weren't good enough.

On the pitch were players good enough to defend against a relegation haunted team, players to create and players to finish - none of them did their job.

Yes the firepower of Owen would change a few things but in Oba Martins, Kieron Dyer and Damien Duff, there are supposed to be goals elsewhere in this team.

The sound of home fans chanting the name of James Milner rubber stamped the fact the natives are restless but then again we all know that's been the case for a long time.

The season is as good as written off by most fans so perhaps it's time to give the likes of Andy Carroll, Charles N'Zogbia, Peter Ramage and even Kazenga Lualua a run in the team.

The way we are feeling at the moment though even that is going to struggle to put a smile on the faces of some.

And the sooner United reach 40-43 points the better.

It's been a long season and it's not over yet though!

We haven't been anywhere near as bad as Sunderland in their poor efforts in the Premiership and we probably won't be going down.

Yet it's painful enough to see a team we all expect so much to be pushing for the top four to lose to a bunch of cloggers like Man City and fail to finish of such lightweight sides at SJP - a place where we used to dust aside the Arsenals, Liverpools, Man Uniteds and Chelseas of the world at a canter.

Not for the first time this year, we feel punch drunk.

Some have even given up on getting wound up by the situation judging by the mass walk out after Emile Mpenza's goal.

Heaven knows what waits in store at Sheffield United next week.

Another painful defeat at the hands of Neil Warnock perhaps?

Where we go from here is anyone's guess.

Here we go again-same old rubbish. We have an apalling lack of know how.We SHOULD HAVE a top class coaching set up-we have not.We SHOULD HAVE a top class tactician-we have not.We would not win the Championship.Look at the teams at the bottom of the Premiership and they all have something in abundance that we do not possess and that is passion.Freddie Shepherd cannot see the woods for the trees. We have become a joke,a laughing stock. It's always what we should do,where we should be.At this moment our position reflects our talent and ambition.Come the revolution brothers!!!.

ive always had a lot of time for glenn roeder, i remember him as a fine player and strong team captain. regrettably, i dont feel that his personality is strong enough to front up to the tough decisions required of a top manager, and i dont believe that his coaching abilities are adequate enough to resort to plan b or even plan c (always assuming that there was a plan a - not evident yesterday). this latter point is really reinforced by the AZ fiasco - van gaal really showed us up. i feel that glenn is out of his depth, and i question the respect that the players have for him. yesterday, it was obvious that we needed width and we got this on the left from Duff, who played his best game for us. unfortunately it was clear very early on that we didnt have this down the right. given the fact that they had no attacking prescence whatsoever to speak of, i was begging him to change at half time, carr off, solano RB, Milner on, Dyer off, Sibierski on. we didnt need butt and parker together - parker could have gone off as butt was playing well, and emre on. now i know that would be far too radical, but at least the first two subs could have been made. instead we got a new centre half (out of his depth in the premiership) - for moore - who was our best defender and genuilnely shocked to come off - he didnt look to be injured. the paucity of thought and tactics is shameful. Radical changes need to be made - i watched espn classics friday night - liverpool 4-3 and man u 5-0, and to see the current lot against what we had made me want to weep. what went wrong? - more importantly - can we make the necessary changes to get us back up there? The fact of the matter is that these heartless wonders are not interested unless they are playing one of the big boys. Roeder would struggle to inspire or motivate an under-11 team. It is depressing. I think that yesterday confirmed to many in the stadium that they will no longer shell out for a season ticket to watch this garbage. Shepherd out - and take Roeder with you.

Next weeks game against Sheffield United is a match between two form teams. Both United's are currently bottom of the (last six games) form guide with 1 point from a possible 18.

This game represents one of only two matches (Watford away being the other) left in our season where we can realistically hope to get maximum points.

If we dont then relegation is a distinct possibility and with NUFC's current financial plight (£150m debt, losing £1m per month) we will be sorely tested next season with little or no funds to improve this squad or management team.

Their standing doesn't look good. Why isn't Emre in? We all know he isn't a goal machine, but what he can do is create for Martins, especially the fact that they have been on the same team for 4 or 5 years. Emre's passes are right on. One holding midfielder looks like plenty to me. Arsenal and Chelsea use that formation. Or maybe Roeder is working the best he can with what he has. In all fairness, the team hasn't been together long enough to gel. But again Emre and Martins have.

sorry Lee just a wee correction.. you said "Apart from Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi, this is the best pool of players available and they weren't good enough." i would say most of the players are good enough its just that they are not being used properly.

i mean high balls to 5 'n' a half footers with two defensive midfielders against a defensive team!

all with an attacking midfielder upfront and a tall targetman on the bench.

these are backwards slap yourself tactics and are not even worthy of a league 2 team!

What annoyed me about the game with Man City was our obvious lack of team togetheness. Did you notice the accusing looks from certain players when their team mates did not deliver the ball to them. There is signs of poor team spirit. Sorry GR has lost it, and the crowd.
Change is imperative immediately in the management team.

When have Toon dusted aside Arsenal,Chelsea,Liverpool,Man.Utd on a regular basis? Somebody lives in cloud cuckoo land!

Lee's reply: I think if you cast your mind back to the Kevin Keegan era, there were several famous victories against these sides when Chelsea were an egg and chips club and we finished 3rd, 6th, 2nd and 2nds in our first four seasons in the Premiership.
I don't know about you but I struggle to forget Andy Cole's hat-trick against Liverpool or Stevie Watson's winner in 95 in the last minute.
We beat Arsenal plenty of times at SJP not to mention the 5-0 against Man U.
Chelsea always struggled for points during that time as well.

Completely agree with your comments, it was an awful day again with too much of a deja vu feeling to it, we are in a very bad way in regard to team leadership, tactics, attitude and responsibility, the team sheet when read out was proof enough that senior player power is well and truly in control of the manager and not the other way round, lets see if Carr and Babyaro are fit next week or sitting it out again in the treatment room, and now we may have SA knocking on GR's door for a game beggars beleive, as sure enough he will play him. The comments by GR that it is hard to break teams down who put 10 men behind the ball shows how inept he is, how come other managers are able to to counter these tactics and win games home and away. Sorry GR but i have had enough of you and it is time for you to go.

Erm... why would you 'expect' this Newcastle team to be pushing for the top 4???!!! with no top level class defenders, even with a fit Owen we would be mid table at best.

Unrealistic views of the talent we have will serve only to foster feelings that we are underachieving, when in fact it is more or less the sum of our parts as a football club at the moment.

I certainly wouldn't expect this team to push for the top 4, and neither do many of my fellow toon fans.

and with a manager increasingly prone to burying his head in the sand, I'm getting pretty worried about what the future may hold.

This is the point in the season when Shepherd starts his annual PR exercise making noises about players coming in, world class managers etc just before awarding himself a large dividend. Frankly I've heard it all before from him and can't be bothered anymore - away matches only for me from now on.

Shepherd Out.

Ryder's reply: I think the Chronicle more than any other newspaper in the country gives fans the chance to vent their spleen via texts, punters panels and the icnewcastle website.
The match reports are far from biased towards the club - players have been getting marks as low as 2/10 this season and last season Jean Alain Boumsong got 0/10.

Our Jarrow mates as always made sure we had a great day and night. I think your description of my team as a bunch of lightweight cloggers is a bit harsh and smacks of the bitterness I usually associate with the dark side of Manchester. Yeah, we're not the greatest team in the world, but you need to look at your own team before slagging off my team for having the cheek to win at SJP. The fact is that it didn't take much to beat you, did it?

I'll even go away and add the points up if you like!

Roeder is not up to the job.

Mind you that's just the opinion of a fan who 'doesn't know how hard it is to breakdown a team who come to play like Man City played'. Funny, I thought that WAS his job? Still I am clearly not a 'Football Person' and do not understand the game like these very informed, extremely knowledgeable and close friends of Messrs Roeder, Souness and Maclaren.(Have you noticed how they all talk about thes Football People when under pressure?) I'm just a very frustrated fan of 47 years who sees his team being dragged into the relegation fight. Roeder WILL take us down unless we do soemthing about it,
maybe this year, maybe next but eventually. Oh and by the way - Scott Parker? - Not fit to be called The Captain of NUFC.

if chairman won't sack Roeder, then all right.
But I think the most important problem is that a lot of player like DyerMartins are lossing their morale. the match against Man City is the best example. i think maybe Roeder should consider next match put Dyer down, and let Milner and N'zogbia up to the field. if Roeder still let such lost their fighting power's player on the field, i do not think we will still at the Premiership next season.

Are we right to be so disapointed or do we have to high an expectation? Why are we so disapointed? Because we consistantly spend big money on (so called) big players (often more than Arsenal, Liverpool n Manu) thats why! With the outlay we make surly by now we should have a sucessful team capable of beating Man C & Fulham etc. 15M - Owen, 10M Martins, 10M - Luque, 6M - Parker, 6M Duff, 4M - Milner, 5M - Bramble, 8M Dyer, 3M Butt. Its about time we had a manager that can manage these big name players to get the best out of them such as an Alex Ferguson. With him defeat is not an option and a goal against is a poor result. WE NEED A MANAGER WHO HAS THE SAME EXPECTATION AS US THE FANS. Im sick of managers happy with mid table. I initially liked what Roder had to say, but the way we played in holland - Newcastle go out to defend a 2 goal lead - that was nuts! Whe should be able to do better with what we have - no excuse. Roader is now sounding like Souness - the players aint good enough and they have to leave. Im sorry, but they are good enough to do better than we are watching!

I think a big problem is that Roeder seems to have decided that/told Dyer, Martins, Duff and Parker that they're his guys, and he doesn't have the guts to drop any of them. Dyer can NOT play as a striker. Martins should have been subbed/rested more in the last few weeks. Duff still hasn't hit form, so Zog should have been given a run. And Parker and Butt shouldn't play together if there are other options.

I make no apologies for the length of this reply but like most of you, I cannot believe what I’m seeing and I have a lot to get off my chest. Like the rest of the +50,000 Mags who turn out for every home game, I’m an optimist but even through black and white eyes our recent displays are beyond poor…and we ARE now in a relegation battle.
We need at least three points from seven games (I think it will be more this season) and whilst my comments would normally look like emotional rantings of a disappointed Mag…the facts are even more concerning. In the last four Premiership matches we have been beaten by Wigan, Charlton, and Man City and only managed a boring scoreless draw at home to Middlesbrough. We only have three home games left and they are against Arsenal, Chelsea and Blackburn. None of these look winnable at the moment, so are we now depending on our strength of character and guile away from home to get the necessary points…oh dear (kept it polite in the hope that it gets posted).

I think we will survive (so did Leeds fans) but we need to fix the mess we have got ourselves into and I think it’s surprisingly simple.

Replace Shepherd and Roeder!

How do you beat a team with 10 men behind the ball? Play the best playmaker you have from the start (Emre), plenty of width to spread the opposition (Milner) and over lapping fullbacks to push them back further (Carr and Babayaro never overlapped once that I can remember)... Switch play from side to side with quick passes to spread them out and pass through the gaps. It's not rocket science, as Glenn was so very eager to point out this time last year. If I can figure half this out, how can't Roeder? No wonder he hasn't got his Uefa Coaching badge...

Roeder, Terry Mac, Pearson, Lee Clarke... what a coaching set up that is. Two relegation specialists in Roeder and pearson and two who wouldn't be able to those kind of jobs anywhere else. Four coaches for a side who reckons they should be giving us a 4th place finish? Yeah right.

Shepherd OUT!

I dont go to home games anymore as I live in Hampshire so I am spared the disappointment of losing at home. However, I do go to all the away games in the south and I have been consistentl stuned at the lack of effort and commitment displayed by much of the team. bramble may be in a recovery period, but he lacks class or finess and will always be a liability. Babyyarro and Carr are clowns and not worthy of further comment. Emre and Duff are not performing - they are capable of much more. Martins lacks class, but hes young, he has no idea when not in front of goal and his passing is abysmal!! Roeder may have steddied the ship, but we have no future with him and top players will not want to sign for him, or an underperforming team living on past glories and pretending to be a major top flight club. The Keegan days and Champions League football are long gone, we are merely making up the numbers in the top flight. Until we act and think like a club with near 60,000 loyal home fans evrery game - I do not see a future. Freddie Sheppard and Roeder are stuck in the past - we need big changes at the club or we have no future in the top flight - no matter how much it saddens me to say so!!

Sometimes I am glad I have been living in Vancouver Canada for the last 27 years. I was aregular every week at St. James from the age of 6 to 14 until we emigrated. The last 3 of those going to reserves games when the first team was away. During the Keegan years I was choked I was so far away from home, during the good years of Sir Bobby was heart breaking, but so many games were on the telly live it made up for it. But Dalglish, Souness and Roeder (this season) I'm glad I can somewhat escape and not be surrounded by so many let down Geordies. Even though there are plenty here that I know. Empty promises year after year. I don't think many fans are really going to put up with this anymore. I have to even listen to Canadians that support The Man U's of this world putting Newcastle down and I don't have a foot to stand on. Embarassing and humiliating. Roeder should have left in a blaze of glory at the end of last season. He will get himself sacked before he would ever think of resigning and the next manager comes in and needs time to sort out his squad. How many fans are going to go a life time with no silverware. I will be listening to the match tomorrow on the internet and will be very interested in the starting 11. If it resembles last week, it will just be a matter of whether Sheffield United can score or it will be a 0-0 draw. Howat the lads.
