About this blog

Blog on the Tyne is dedicated to bring Toon fans everywhere the most up to date NUFC views, opinions and comment.

The author Lee Ryder, proudly born and bred on Tyneside, has followed the fortunes of the club over the last three decades as a Toon fan and football writer.

From the high octane atmosphere of St James' Park to the Premiership grounds up and down the country and into Europe - this Blog has been there.

But the coverage doesn't stop at first team level.

Blog on the Tyne is also proud to be there to witness the future of the club with regular coverage of Newcastle United's reserve side, as well as all things black and white.

The storm before another storm?

Posted by Lee on April 4, 2007 1:09 PM |

The natives are still restless, the Premiership table hasn't changed and many Toon fans are still reeling from the abject 1-0 defeat against Manchester City.

But that won't stop thousands of Geordies travelling to Bramall Lane for the clash with Sheffield United.

A single point from the last 12 in the Premiership and 380 minutes without a goal, make no bones about it United need to win to stave off the scent of the Championship or a relegation battle.

Every where you walk on Tyneside you can sense the nervous energy from the pubs and clubs, the barbers, the local cabbie, the post office and beyond.

It's easy to say keep calm but these are stormy waters right now, people are now in a daze and don't know what to think any more!

To renew or not renew that is the question when it comes to season tickets.

But haven't we been here before under Sir Bobby Robson?

Back in 2000/2001 people shouted for the manager and the head of board members.

United had Alan Shearer, just like Michael Owen now, missing for much of the season and they couldn't seem to raise the bar and climb away from mid-table waters.

Twelve months later United were celebrating qualifying for Champions League football.

That of course is of no consolation right now and with Liverpool, Aston Villa and Chelsea all having money to burn this summer, and Arsenal already kitted out with a decent side themselves, the top four seems even further away.

Would United be better off with a season out of Europe and signing a few players who are glad to be playing at the higher level rather than your Babayaros or Carrs or generally players who don't seem to care?

They did with the likes of Craig Bellamy, bless him, back in 2001/2002 and it certainly paid off.

It's enough to make you enrol on an anger management course isn't it?

But for now or at least 90 minutes the time may have come at Bramall Lane to keep cool and get behind the team.

Then again, I wouldn't expect anything less from Newcastle's loyal away fans.

I watch from afar the goings on at St James' Park as I now live in Spain. The only pain in leaving was giving up my season ticket of many years. I now 'watch' the internet reports of games. I have some questions, how is it that the present manager Roeder himself a captain and defender is unable to produce a secure & tacticaly sound defence? If he can't, then why does he not use the Keegan approach - just score one more goal than the opposition. Or is that the two things are linked and that Roeder is unable to produce attacking tactics becaus he was a defender? Or is it that he is just incapable? Unfortunately, I think its the latter, he should have been left dealing with the Academy, for which he seemed well suited. Mr Roeder finds himself now well beyond his level of competence!

Lee, don't mistake loyalty to the black and white shirt as support for Shepherd or Roeder.

Sorry i wont be there in person as i will be here in Baku earning my crust, but my heart will be with them in Sheffield albeit i still think we will be on the end of a 2-1 defeat, GR does not instill me with any confidence more like confusion and worry. i am sure it is the same with the players, i wonder which team will run out on Saturday and who is left warming the bench, no doubt being fit, he will have Carr and Babyaro included, and maybe Ameobi, which for me would put the icing on the Roeder cake. So i will be watching it live out here and hoping for a point but will not be too disapointed if we fail yet again, as you know we are getting quite used to this.

why doesnt roeder sell all except GIVEN, RAMAGE, HUNTINGTON, EDGAR, TAYLOR, BERNARD, PARKER, DUFF, SOLANO, DYER, MARTINS, NZOGBIA and OWEN. He should then buy some affordable players such as DUNNE(watch him play for Ireland), BROWN, IRELAND, FERDINAND,ASHTON and REO-COKER. Our team would look like this

Given
Brown Ferdinand
Dunne Taylor

Dyer Parker Duff

Martins

Owen Ashton

"abject defeat" Lee? Not according to our football person Mr. Roeder, we controlled the game!
Back to reality forget Sheffield I'm already filling my pants and dreading Arsenal, Pompey, Chelsea and even blackburn. Did someone once say that a team reflects its manager, well we are hopeless.

Ryder's reply: There is no escape from the fact the run-in is as tough as it could be oxboy.
And the whole of Tyneside probably feels the same way in that nobody knows just where the next goal or point is coming from.
But can Newcastle play as badly as this forever?

As for next season.
Chelsea have their problems, Man U maybe losing Ronaldo, and Liverpool are going through their changes. This leaves New Castle with an opening to sneak in the top 4. They will not sneak in with inconsistency and finger pointing. If they change their squad around they will come out of the gates losing.

Brewcastle - Norway wrote...

Parker can be a hard working man, but Newcastle's fast attacking football suffers under him. He use often too many touches and keeps the ball too long instead of give the fast releasing passes.
Somebody thought about why Newcastle had a quite good run when Parker was injured?

I want to see this 11 against Sheffield Utd. It's time to bring back the fast attcking football: Given-Solano-Taylor-Gooch-Babayaro--Butt (at his usual place)--Milner-Emre-N'Zogbia--Dyer--Martins.

On the bench: Harper-Duff-Huntington-Parker-Sibierski

"....Every where you walk on Tyneside you can sense the nervous energy from the pubs and clubs, the barbers, the local cabbie, the post office and beyond..." This is without doubt one of the funniest things I have read in years. The average age for a person attending a Premiership game is 43 - people in their 20s cannot afford games and on the whole are not interested in football. If people were paying on the gate - NUFC crowds would be below 30,000 As NUFC have been the bench mark for mediocrity for the last 40 years - why should the general public be overly concerned about the current round of rubbish being served up as football??? Please explain.

never mind jr can freddy fire gr as its souness all over again he picks his favourites in whatever way he can fit them in the team butt and parker cannit play together and for him to say they can is rubbish and his arrogance in his comments the other day was nothing short of unbeliveable as his manageral record is at best very poor
