A new era has dawned

Posted by Lee on May 15, 2007 9:59 AM |

Messiahs and helicopters appear to go together hand in hand.

Kevin Keegan left the hallowed St James' Park as a player by one and across the fine Tyneside skies this morning emerged another chopper - hopefully containing the man who finally sorts out the mess that is Newcastle United.

Sam Allardyce touched down at St James' Park today with the reputation of a man that who can inspire and get the best out of players.

In El Hadji Diouf alone - Allardyce managed to pick the African player up from the floor when his career looked like it was over and turn him into a genuine threat in the Premiership.

First up for Allardyce will be to meet with troubled stars Oba Martins and Charles N' Zogbia as well as Michael Owen - who seems to be keen on returning to the North-West.

Allardyce is thought to have money waiting to spend but in the past he has proved he can get the best out of Bosman transfers too.

He has already admitted this is the biggest test of his career and is hell-bent on finally ending the trophy drought that has plagued the Toon Army and some of the biggest names in football in the dug-out.

Bobby Robson, Ruud Gullit, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Kevin Keegan all failed to bring in some silverware.

And when United turned to a man not deemed a big name in Glenn Roeder that failed as well.

So in Allardyce have United finally nailed a man who is right in the middle?

Not a big name as a player but with the managerial background and ambition to finally sort this lot out?

And as Big Sam took his seat in the Press Conference at lunchtime you could almost taste the anticipation in a room as the Geordie public looks forward to an era that they hope will be one to tell their grandchildren about.

Spaceage methods and a scientific approach to the game are already on the CV for Big Sam and even though he hasn't won a trophy to date - the whole of Tyneside are waiting for that to change for both the new boss and the current set of fans who have felt the pain since 1969 when Bob Moncur hoisted the Fairs Cup

Sam may not be what many want but maybe he's what we need. He's certainly what we've got!

First job get rid of the uncommitted once and for all.

I think Sam could be the man, but I hope he is given time and a little patience from the fans...changing the backroom setup to the extent that he (probably) will is going to take some time, and then time again for these changes to begin to have an effect on the players. i just hope he isn't sacked when he doesn't win the first 10 games of next season.

What if he turns out like the "Messiah" Lawrie McMenemy at Sunderland?

First and foremost we need man mangement skills in an unruly dressing room, for that reason alone this appointment is up there with KK and Sir Bobby's appointments for me. All the successful clubs have managers the players don't cross. You've not got to look far across the tyne to see a perfect example of how important getting the basics right is and what can be done if when they are.

I hope Big Sam is the man to bring us success.

But if a Geordie, Sir Bobby Robson who finished 3rd,4th & 5th before being sacked, couldn't content the toon crowd or Freddy Shepherd, than what chance does a long-ball playing mackem, who turned us down and tried to get our last manager sacked have?

He will have to get off to a good start to keep the crowd on side.

Unlike most other appointments I can remember, this one really does feel like the start of a new era. Frankly, that's what we need - a whole new mentality and approach. I think Allardyce is the man to do it, but he has got to be given time - two full seasons at least. Like it or not, we've entered the spaceage and Spaceman Sam is arguably ahead of the game in that respect. Apparently Freddie Shepherd thought Tai Chi was a South Korean full-back.

This man is tough!so all you night clubbers and humvie drivers had better pack your bags.
Alternatively you might be allowed to prove yourselves pre-season, personally I would pack you off now!
Either way get ready for some no nonsense methods being introduced on the training ground and the dressing room.
Yes I can see some of the players hanging off coat pegs, and the texters being nailed to the wall prior to being packed of to less ambitious clubs.
Go on Sam build a real UNITED team from back to front that the top four fear.

I have to say that Allardyce would never have been my first choice.
But he is here now and at least he gives the impression of being competent at his job, unlike his two predecesers.
I will reserve judgement and wait to see what he actually does.

So Shambles was the first to be shown the door, sounds like Big Sam is off to a good start. Dyer to Spurs, Owen to Manure, and Obe to Arse-nal, should unsettle their dressing-rooms nicely. Pity we do have anyone to sell off to Chelski, maybe they will take the Duffer back then !!

I think sam is the ideal manager to sort out the dressing room unrest. Roeder steadied the boat but could not take us any further. If he's given time and money he could be one to break us into the top 5!!!

If Allardyce drags Nzogbia and Martins out of Tiger Tiger and onto the training pitch, it'll be a start. Pray, however, that he doesn't buy Joey Barton and further reduce the credibility of NUFC.

Nice to see three centre backs gone. One more to go, however - and Babayaro, Dyer and Parker and maybe Duff. Shola has to go too. I know I've seen him give some defences a hard time, but he doesn't score enough and if we really are still a "big club"(!), we ought to remind ourselves that there isn't a cat in hell's chance of any of the other "big clubs" featuring someone that performs like Shola in their starting line up. Truth hurts, but there it is.

Could this be likened to the second coming of Jesus? Which, of course hasn't happened yet, but it's certainly looking up for NUFC. Watch out Mancs, we're coming for your trophy!
