Sick as parrots (again)

Posted by Lee on May 5, 2007 9:44 PM |

A sick end to what has proved to be a sickening campaign.

The protests at the end of the game were nothing new and the “lap of honour turned into somewhat of a farce as the Toon players came face to face with a mix of the boos, jeers and applause.

Credit goes to those who managed to clap off the players while Stephen Carr could not join in the parade due to urgent treatment required on a muscle injury.

Well it’s fair to say many Toon fans tonight needed some treatment of their own to nurse their broken hearts after another bad display.

True, Benni McCarthy was a mile offside when he headed home on 14 minutes but Newcastle were tame in attack.

Michael Owen was unlucky to see Christopher Samba head off the line in the second half but that’s how it is going for Newcastle at the minute in attack.

But for Blackburn’s second there can be no excuse for the time and space allowed for Jason Roberts to bullet home for 2-0 – where was the marking?

We can’t score and we are rolling out a red carpet for the opposition to score at the other end.

It’s quite simple really.

But for now many are wounded and by the look of a few abandoned season ticket books on the side of the pitch it looks like a few aren’t coming back!

Roder pleading for more time just makes him look weak. The fact of the matter is he is now a complete lame duck in charge of a team going nowhere. Fans will not renew their season tickets with Roeder in charge. That is the uncomfortable truth which Freddie Shepherd hace to face today.

What a gutless performance.
What was Solano meant to be doing? How can he be right back and right wing at his age? Where on earth was Dyer, who, with the exception of that header, turned in another dreadful performance. Time to go. For the rumoured 80 grand a week he gets, two or three decent performances per season is a pretty bad return.
However, a lot of the blame for this game must go to Parker and Butt. A lot's been written on how they shouldn't be in the same team and today was exhibit A. Butt was out of sorts from the start - unnecessarily aggressive and poor passing; but, if you thought he weas bad, look no further than Super Scotty. Can't run, can't pass, raely supports the attack, seems to think that going sideways is the best option. In the second half he went AWOL. I had to check if he was still on the pitch. No wonder Chelsea sold him. And Duff. And Babayaro. It's a shame that some people in the crowd equate a crunching tackle with good football, where all too often it's equated with a free kick against us. There's absolutely no guile there. Get rid of him.

Unfortunately, it's crystal clear from this season that our manager is no tactician (one striker against Man U away anybody?) and team selection isn't up to much either. Why not stick N'Zogbia out left and Milner on the right when Dyer left the pitch? He's got to go.

What a way to bow out.

So Roeder has gone. Well, it's not before time after the rubbish we have all had to witness this season. I would like to see him stay to look after the acadmey though. Will Freddie follow, after so many bad appointments? I doubt it very much, as he & the mercenary Douglas Hall, (what exactly does he do), have far too much influence for a PLC. Questions also have to be asked of the vastly over-rated Dyer, who should be sold to the highest bidder, assuming there will be one! Let's hope we do not appoint Big Sam. Can you see Owen & Martins fitting into his long-ball style of football? I would go for Ranieri, Houllier or dare I say it, the return of King Kevin. Clear out the backroom staff & start afresh. The club needs an overhaul from top to bottom or we risk another season of abject failure & frustration.

Roeder had to go and quite rightly so, he chooses the team and tactics, he has to be held responsible, but also as he was hand picked by FS for the job he also has to be held responsible for opting to put him in the hot seat, so the leaving of Roeder gives FS a breathing space and takes the heat off him as it has done in the past. So who will want to take over and try and sort this club out is open to debate, although the speculation remains that Big sam will step in, although he is Big, is he big enough for the job in hand, will he make the difference we so crave and bring back attractive good attacking football, bringing in good 100% commited players, who knows, only Freddie can tell us what he has in store for the next entralling episode of the countires favorite soap.

Just wanted to clarify my comments above. I thought Solano had a poor game against Blackburn but he's been a revelation at right back and is certainly one of the our best this season. My concern is that he's being asked to do the jobs of two men while Dyer's running around aimlessly, showing too much of the ball to the opposition. I don't understand why NUFC feels it owes Dyer a living (though, of course, I've heard the rumours) but if a bid comes in, he should go and let's have someone who wants to play football for us and be part of a team.

Agree with Michael. Let Roeder take care of the academy, and do not sign Big Sam! -Go for a manager that brings back the good old attacking football to SJP. One candidate could be Ronald Koeman. As a former goalscoring defender, and manager with international experience, he can take care of both attacking and defending.

Good luck with future to Glenn. -Thank's for trying!

Roeder had to go, but lets be honest, at the time, so did Souness, Daglish, Robson, Gullit. What's the common denominator. Bloody Shepherd, but because he's not an easy target to move, we step down the ladder and focus on the manager. It was the same with McKeag,Westwood, and Hall before him. They moved when the money was right for them, the club and the supporters never entered the equation.

52 years and waiting ! !

A display of pretend professional footie which served as a perfect example of the confused thinking of the manager who has been clearly out of his depth since last summers debacle sin the transfer market.
Don't let the players off the hook. As supposed professionals they pick up their pay every month, their principals don't get in the way then but they seem to when, for 90 minutes every week, they are asked to entertain those who pay for their excessive income. If the rest of the country behaved like that where would we be? Its quite shameful.
Finally the buck stops in one place, the board. They appoint managers, set the tone for the club, manage the finances and how spectacularly they have failed year after year after year.New sick rooms, hotels, casinos we dont need. Boom and bust spending, a lack of support for any manager when the going gets tough and a total lack of inspiration and motivation as well as an utter contempt for the supporters, none are needed. Time for change and not just the manager, those really responsible need to leave and quickly.

Please, bring in Louis Van Gaal - whatever it takes, just do it! Remember Alkmaar away? He was an inspiration to his team. Top quality, tactically astute, a great motivator, is used to winning, gets the best from his team, plays attractive attacking football and builds solid defences. Surely St James Park is a better stage than Alkmaar. Am I the only one who can see this, or have we all settled for Sam Allardyce?

Just take a step back and think what the supporters are doing to this football club. I firmly believe that Shepherd crumbled under the pressure of the fans on Saturday evening after the home defeat to Blackburn. Agreed, it wasn't the result that we hoped for, but to mock the players, manager and board hasn't helped anything. It's about time we actually got behind the team and showed some of the passion that the Geordie fans are renowned for. It doesn't make a difference whether we're winning, drawing or losing by a country mile - we should support our guys, not give them stick for lacking performances. Try singing louder instead of booing them, take your scarves and give them the carnival atmosphere of Alan Shearer's testimonial. If we make SJP as intimidating every game, we can't stand to lose.
