About this blog

Blog on the Tyne is dedicated to bring Toon fans everywhere the most up to date NUFC views, opinions and comment.

The author Lee Ryder, proudly born and bred on Tyneside, has followed the fortunes of the club over the last three decades as a Toon fan and football writer.

From the high octane atmosphere of St James' Park to the Premiership grounds up and down the country and into Europe - this Blog has been there.

But the coverage doesn't stop at first team level.

Blog on the Tyne is also proud to be there to witness the future of the club with regular coverage of Newcastle United's reserve side, as well as all things black and white.

What a pair of clowns

Oba MartinsTheir poor performances were two of the reasons that Glenn Roeder is no longer in a job.

And now they have more or less thrown the towel in on their careers with Newcastle United.

Oba Martins and Charles N' Zogbia's petty strops ahead of the final game of the season at Watford summed up just what is wrong with this crazy club.

It seems that the players are calling the shots here and it's going to take a big hard man to sort them out.

But haven't we been here before?

Graeme Souness was called upon to do the same as manager back in 2004 but couldn't complete the job after gaining some early respect.

Yet in the end he only succeeded in driving away Craig Bellamy - one of the best players at the club by some way - and almost took Newcastle to the Championship.

Now Big Sam must come in and be hard but fair.

It's no good treating this lot like naughty schoolboys because some of them appear to enjoy it.

Quite what Allardyce must do is beyond me and if I knew then my CV would long have landed on the big welcome mat at St James' Park.

But we can only live in hope that Big Sam's magic Reebok recipe works at Gallowgate.

One thing is for sure at least the board haven't messed around and waited four games into the new season with the kitty already spent on other players by the previous manager.

And the hope is that with a bit of cash behind United and a new approach to life in the Premiership, which will hopefully bring back a bit of pride, Big Sam can take United forward.

And after the debacle at Watford yesterday, he is going to have a huge job on his hands.

Starting with sorting out Martins and N' Zogbia

It is becoming quite clear that Glen Roeder and the current management team do not have the respect of the current crop of players. And Shola was correct when he said it was the players that got Glen the sack.
So maybe there will be some justice in so far as the players will soon have a new regime to work under which I am sure will be a major culture shock to most of them.
God forbid that that they might actually have to buckle down both on and off the park and actually earn their wages rather than do as they please .
It is this type of attitude that makes me yearn for Big Sam coming along sooner rather than later so that he can deflate many of these massive egos that prevail at our club.I want to see a team of players who are
proud to wear the shirt and who recognise what an honour it is to play for us. Passion and commitment are essential elements of any player donning the black and white and I will gladly sacrifice skill and ability to see a whole hearted committed team for once.
Big Sam has his critics but I am not one yet as I believe that he will certainly rid us of the bling culture and player power that seems to exist and that is certainly a step in the right direction.

Some of the players behaviour shows what Roeder had to deal with. -Talking about players respect for the managing team doesn't explain much about Roeder and staff. Because the attitude from the players shows they won't have respect for anything - except themselves. They're obviously so in love with themselves that team-mates and the club doesn't count at all. The first job for the new manager is to get rid of the crap, or have they're attitude change dramatically - if possible.

It's amazing how things change. Just a few short weeks ago, you and Mr Oliver were fighting Roeders corner and insisting he would be here next season. Now it's 'he got the sack due to the players', with two specifically mentioned. What about the consistently poor performances of Duff (contributed less than Martins), Carr and Bramble?
Surely it was the managers job to stop this anarchy? Are oyu telling us this wasn't going on before and only started when Roeder got sacked, Lee?

Ryder's reply: The same players also guided United back into Europe 12 months ago but could not seem to do it again this year.
Injuries have been a key factor this season and meant the manager was not able to name a consistent XI.
Anyone can see that.
Results got Glenn the job last season and are also the reason he isn't in the job today.
It happens in football all over the world and the only thing that stays the same is change.
There is no conspiracy in all of this.
