Ger in man, that's a hat-trick!

Posted by Lee on July 3, 2007 2:17 PM |

GeremiSo, Newcastle United 3, Middlesbrough 0 and that's before a ball has even been kicked.

First it was Mark Viduka, then Joey Barton and now Riverside old boy Geremi, who is the latest to join Big Sam's revolution at St James' Park and not to join Gareth Southgate and the lads on Teesside.

United jetted out to Austria today for their boot camp in Stegersbach but the Cameroon World Cup star wasn't on board their 9am flight to Graz this morning from Newcastle Airport.

The former Chelsea ace was putting his feet up after helping his country to qualify for the African Nations next year in Ghana but will be ready to rock and roll in the Toon's pre-season freindlies.

You certainly have to be in a better frame of mind than this time last year when Glenn Roeder hadn't even signed a player at this stage with Damien Duff coming in on July 22.

This time around we've signed four players and there is more to come,

Geremi is likely to start the season at right-back for Big Sam but his versatility could see him operate wide right or even in the middle of the park.

The Cameroon star is hard working and not afraid to get stuck in, I mean anyone who has witnessed an African Nations match, knows that many of the fairies we see in the Premiership wouldn't last two minutes with some of the tackles that go in during those games.

United fans will as ever be cautious during the pre-season but optimistic at the same time.

And if Big Sam continues to attract established stars such Geremi, Viduka, Barton and David Rozenhal, all four of them bringing in some much needed quality and experience.

Nobody is saying they are world class just yet, but they are looking like what could be the difference between that abject 13th place and the top six.

Keep them coming Big Sam!

Black and White Reunion

No less than 22 former United favourites attending the Black And White Reunion in August which takes place at St James' Park.

Organised by fanzine editor Steve Wraith the night will include backing from former players such as Bob Moncur, SuperMac and John Beresford.

Wraith told me: "We wanted to do a special fundraiser for Leam Rangers YFC and decided to organise the largest sporting dinner the North East has ever seen.

"We have a great cross section of players from the last four decades are will hopefully have a couple of first team players there on the night although they will have to be in bed early as we play Aston Villa at home the next day."

Standard tables cost £300 while VIP tables will cost £500

Things moving in the right direction and still the big kitty to spend. Big Sam living up to reputation.

I wouldn't say Big Sam was living up to his reputation just yet, but things are definitely moving in the right direction. We still need a lot of players to bolster a pitiful thin squad because even with the three acquisitions were still 3 players short from last season, and we all know what happened when we got a few injures. So hopefully Big Sam has only just started the revolution and the big names for small prices will keep rolling in.

A good squad signing but as yet the team shape is not clear.

we seem to have an awful lot of right sided players when we need at least two on the left.

Carry on Sam!

Only the complete rebuilding of the left side of the team to go. We are devoid of any left footed players that you could class as reliable firstly, never mind talented.

We need a pl proven lb and an understudy meaning we could hopefully ship out Babayaro.

We will have to wait and see how Sam handles nzogbia/duff/luqe but we can not start the season simply hopeing that Sam has got through to them there has to be at least one wide left footed player brought in, especially as nzogbia is our only fit and proper left winger that can play lw in a 422 and even he prefers to play cm.

after that a left footed centre back and centre mid would be nice to add some balance and variation to the team. Our mf has never been the same since Speed was sold and even at his age he could yet be a more reliabe option than Emre.

Souness was probably wrong to say that you wouldn't win much with a team of Milners but you certainly wont win much with a team of Geremi's thats for sure.

I'm sorry, but Edmilson will be a mistake. I say this because he will be in on November. That's 4 months of training away. I would trust Ramage then make excuses everytime Edmilson makes mistakes and gets scored on when he arrives because of the thought that he will eventually provide production. In football, 1 goal and it could mean losing. No to Edmilson and yes to another back.

sam is doing a good job but we need more defenders possibly aleft full back and a central defender to assist David and taylor

Little Vern wrote...

I'd have been much happier if we'd signed a left back; this has been a major area of weakness for some time. I don't think Ramage is capable in this position and Babayaro is neither reliable nor, for most of the time, fit. Wide left concerns me too; none of the players mentioned by Iain give me much optimism. Charlie did, but not last season. I don't think its Luque's natural position and Duff likes to cut in and try to beat someone twice or more before he's willing to part with the ball. Can he tackle? Maybe he could do a Nobby and transfer to full back.

I, too, would be a lot happier if we offloaded Baba - and Dyer, for that matter.

Ryder's reply: Keep you eyes peeled Little Vern, Big Sam is working round the clock to get a new left-back in.

Paul Patterson wrote...

Lee, if we were to be bold we could dish out a 4-0 hammering to the Boro if we were to sign Stewart Downing and solve our left wing problems at the same time.

Now, Im not bothered about scoring brownie points against the unclean from yorkshire, but will Downing improve our squad? Yes.

Whilst N'Zogbia is a fine player, he obviously doesn't want to be there (And would our fans give him the benefit of the doubt, next time he takes to the field after his Watford antics, Booooo!!)

Big Sam must surely have earn't the respect of not only the fans but Mr Ashley and now must be allowed to make a few big money signings as so far he has been very prudent with his transfer dealings and I am very impressed.

Imagine if he were to sell either Martins or Owen and get in Defoe or Gudjonsson, (He'd be in profit, and in the process strengthening the team, can any of our previous managers say that?)

This is were Downing fits in, Downing and Duff working the left wing and Milner, Solano and Geremi working the right would be sensational.

Just a left back or two to find and we will fly. Paul

Ryder's reply: Signing Downing would certainly be way to complete such a rout Paul.

Erm.. I fail to see why we are getting our knickers in a twist here.

Hes a decent squad man, and an asset due to his versatility, but thats it... he's not a signing to take us on to a new level... I'd say we have two Nobby Solanos now and not one..

Still, it reflects our reality that we are battling the likes of Boro for a signing I suppose....and celebrating it!

Best of luck Big Sam though.. he's been positive and strong-willed in his approach so far... I'm backing him to be a big success, but in the long-term more so than the short.

After today's Chronicle report on the huge kitty still to play with, and Mort's report of a new signing to ' Rock the world of football ', I've got a smile on my face not seen since my wedding night. I only hope it's not Rod Stewart. The downside is I don't have a season ticket anymore since Dalglish forced me out in his second season, DRAT !!! I just know we're gonna do well with Mike Ashley, and big Sam of course. My Smog and Mackem associates are silent, I mean deathly, not even a joke anymore tee-hee. And before anyone starts attacking Roeder for his very fair comments, let me say that five years to achieve top six status on this kind of backing will definitely not sit well with our overly-patient fans. This ain't Bolton and we've tasted the good life with Keegan on a much smaller budget than what you've got Sam, so don't condescend to us or insult our intelligence please.

Sid wrote...

Obviously Sam is signing up 'name' players on low fees to make us more attractive to the bigger 'name' players on bigger fees who will need some convincing we are a force despite no Euro football.

As he rebuilds, he still needs results. Getting players in to 'do it now' and thus give time to attract real quality makes a lot of sense.

So well done Sam on getting the current four. Hopefully the fees and quality can now start to come in over the this and subsequent windows...I doubt he thinks he will need five years, but two would be more realistic to build his own team.

Paul O'Neil wrote...

I can't believe all the negativity at the moment - Newcastle have signed 4 players already! This time last year we hadn't even signed duff for another 3 weeks!

And to top all this the 4 players are good signings, they may not be world superstars that cost £15-£18m but they will improve our team! Bar geremi the other 3 are players that have been the best players at their club! That is the direction to move in - not buying players that can't get into the first team at a big club!

Carry on big sam, you've impressed me, just sign a left back or two (i'll have baines, Shory or bridge NOT FUSSY!) and we'll be i the top 6 no problem!

Genghiz wrote...

If Geremi isn't the quality of a Makelele or Gilberto, then what use is he. Yes Butt will be retiring soon. So he may find a place that we can say he is solid. He needs to be good in the defending and holding role.

Well i for one think Sam has made a decent forray into the market and we are only in the first week of July.We all need to be a tad carefull with the "signing which will rock world football" . I mean if the targets are as big as we are led to believe then why would they want a winter in Newcastle without the atraction of Europe. We have had enough mercenaries up this way and could do with out another.Mind you if they are looking for a headline filler Bellamy is probably looking for a club and that would rock some of the football world , Wouldnt fancy Barton and Bellamy in the back of my taxi but on the pitch i could get used to it.
On a lighter note i did here a whisper that Saviola has been approached and is mulling over a prospective move...Jackie

I wish everyone would just trust big Sam, i think his attitude and mentality are a revelation in a cynical world.

Geremi is a great signing (who cost the huge sum of £0!!), he has experience at clubs like real and chelsea & can also play in a number of different positions which would have come in very handy last season.

I agree that we still need at least one left back and probably another center half however Sam knows this and will be working his socks off to get the right players in.

Looking forward to the new season and seeing Sam and his new boys in action for real...KT

I'm going to have to disagree with the Premiership being less aggressive compared to the African league. I've seen games where Emre was tackled very hard. At least 3-5 times and then injured after the 2 of them, that I can recall.
