At one point there was talk of us playing in the Amsterdam Tournament but instead we are all heading down to Hull!
Clearly Newcastle United have gone out of fashion in Europe and after last season's 13th place finish, it's no surprise.
The current climate - which can change very quickly round here - is in doom and gloom mode at the moment.
Big Sam is not getting any money to spend right now despite hope and talk from those around Mike Ashley - before he took full control of the club - that the manager would be backed, we are still waiting for the "big one" to come out of the bag.
The manager is still heading into the new season with his defence looking extremely light and lacking depth.
But Ashley and his new chairman Chris Mort seem to be cool on the situation.
The questions though have quickly moved to just when are they going to get the cheque book out?
Ironically, being unbeaten in the pre-season is not helping Allardyce at the moment but the fact we have won a few games in the leg warmers is papering over the cracks.
Last season the squad broke down very early in the campaign and with NINE injuries on the board already it's looking bleak - there is a big danger the same thing could happen again.
Things are bleak enough for a team full of kids to play the reserve games and most of the reserve team/fringe players to be running out against Juventus for the first team.
Big Sam was not the choice of Ashley but the time has come for Allardyce to be backed.
Glenn Roeder wasn't exactly backed to the limit by the previous board and this has to be deemed as a similar scenario at the moment.
