Giving it the big one

Posted by Lee on July 6, 2007 1:42 PM |

Newcastle United's transformation at board room level is more or less complete with Mike Ashley clearly running the show at St James' Park, albeit behind the scenes.

This week the man Ashley opted to front the new Newcastle United, was London lawyer Chris Mort, who quickly got to work by meeting the media circus at St James' Park to underline the exact intentions of the new board.

Mort skimmed over a variety of subjects during his first public appearance but the message was clear that more much needed signings WILL follow the arrivals of Mark Viduka, Geremi, David Rozenhal and Joey Barton.

And rumblings this week are that a big name player could follow as Ashley looks to make a statement that will "shock the football world".

But hold on, after months of certain sections of fans (particularly faceless fans on the internet) starting one campaign after another to remove the previous board.

Now it appears that even positive talk of new signings will be met by a similar tidal wave of negativity.

I mean, why turn up?

Why follow the progress of the team, when all you want to do is slate/doubt/cry or rant about the team before a ball has even been kicked.

Don't get me wrong for one minute, the Newcastle United supporters always offer some of the most knowledgeable opinions on the planet when it comes to football, and that's what many people who don't even live here tell me at every away ground from Mansfield to Man City.

By all means have an opinion.

But why does it have to be negative every time from some people?

And it's the same people every single time!

Mike Ashley is a billionaire tycoon that "parks tanks" on people's lawns, he doesn't mess about in his business life and surely he hasn't just bothered buying NUFC for a laugh!

After only splashing out pocket change so far at the Toon, Ashley is said to be bringing in a big name player to Newcastle.

And he has the money and the bottle to do it by the look of it given his whirlwind and pretty painless takeover in the last month or so.

If he hasn't and the information given to this journalist is wrong.

Then yeah, bring on the critics, I'll take it on the chin and join in the lives of doom and gloom and that the club is going to lose all 38 games and we are never going to see anyone lift a trophy as long as we live.

But what if it's right and we are going for the big time again and signing "big name" players.

And who can say that it's not right until the 00:01 September 1?

The transfer window will be slammed shut then and the new board can be judged for the first time.

What if the future in general is big names, big signings, trophies (one would do me for now), good times and not having to stop the 1995/96 season video as soon as it gets to the 4-3 Liverpool away game?

For crying out loud let's see some people being positive and enjoying making Newcastle United the force it once was on and off the field of play.

Let's look forward to going to Hartlepool on July 17 and making enough noise to welcome Big Sam into our world that his ear piece falls out in the first five minutes.

Let's hear the Toon Army Ultras continue that amazing support and non-stop singing.

Let's look forward to Mark Viduka and Michael Owen bagging the goals to take us up the table and back where we belong.

Let's look forward to Joey Barton linking up with a "big name" signing, getting in some crunching tackles and then sliding in through the new turf on his knees at the Gallowgate corner when he gets his first strike in a Toon top.

I mean if you can't raise an ounce of passion now with two weeks before the friendlies start and even have the audacity to dream about being a decent team with a decent manager - you never will!

For those who want to get behind their team and give it a bit of Geordie pride again, jump on!

If you don't, suck it in for a while, take up something like bird watching, where you always get a positive outcome because football obviously isn't for you.

OK, rant over and it's a shame it wasn't in the St James' Park dressing rooms because I've always wanted to throw a teapot at the wall!

Keep the Faith
Lee

And now Ashley's vision for the future...

You don't often get anything for nowt in this world and what you do have to pay for, you normally get over charged or ripped off!

But you have to say that new Toon tycoon Mike Ashley's gesture of giving kids free tickets for friendlies is a move that makes a refreshing change.

OK, it won't change the world and football is still far too expensive for kids these days.

But howay, it's a start.

Basically the deal is any adult who buys an adult price ticket in advance of the game may request two free tickets for under 11s.

It means that the friendlies against Juventus, Celtic and Sampdoria could well have a youthful atmosphere around them which makes a change to rows of empty grey seats in previous pre-season games.

And after all, these kids coming threw the turnstile for the first time are the future of the club.

Congratulations to the editor of this august organ for such a well-argued, thoughtful and structured piece.
Don't get me wrong, we can all have a moan from time to time. And we all have troubles in our life.
The delivery of my new Rolls, for example, was delayed after I asked for the interior to be made purely from mink fur.
And, apparently, there's also a current shortage of squat lobster which is playing havoc with my social calendar as I planned to hold a function on my yacht for the Monaco Grand Prix.
However, one thing which I am not moaning about at the moment is the new verve at my beloved Newcastle United.
New manager, new board, new players and a renewed energy about the place.
Toon fans are undoubtedly the best in the world. But some have recently become more negatively charged than any electron you could wish to meet.
I'm looking forward to the start of this season more than I have any in the recent past. Granted, we're in transition. But I believe it's a transition moving forward, not moving back.
So, come on, fellow Geordies. There is, as Mr Ryder rightly points out, every reason to be positive.

They have their opinion. You have yours. Basically, that's all it boils down to. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Except, of course, they actually pay for their tickets.

Ryder's reply: Yes they do pay for their tickets.
But from the age of 11 upwards to only a couple of years ago, I did too. From Mansfield to Monaco as well.

Well I for one am very excited about the upcoming season and although we still need to rebuild the squad, go through pre-season training etc I wish the Bolton Wanderers game as this weekend, I want the league to start now!
I think after Newcastles long trophyless history it will be very hard to convert those hardy pessimists into enthusiasts, I mean how many times in the last 15 years have toon fans had their hearts broken? A 12 point league lead, two FA cup finals, god knows how many quarter finals, and still nothing has come from it, until now I believe. I think we finally have the team for success, look at Mike Ashley. A man so ruthless he bought shares in JJB just to screw his rival over, who will do whatever it takes to deliver success. Then look at Big Sam, do you think he will take mediocrity for an answer? If so Bramble and Moore would be sitting comforably in Austria with their new contracts thinking life doesn't get any easier. I'm glad we finally have manager with the stones to deal with and get rid of the clubs problems rather than try to cover it up like previous managers.

I give the pessimists a year and i'll bet they'll be born again Toon Army soldiers!

Howay the Toon!

For the first time in a number of years I will get up on a Saturday (or Sunday) morning and actually feel what I used to feel years ago - anticipation at the match I am going to see that day. Recently I have gone because of my love for the club not for the owners and certain players. Mr. Ashley and Big Sam have actually given me some hope that I may see us win something before I die. No, I don't expect everything to happen this coming season but I'll bet the noise will be greater than it has been for two or three years now. It was not seating that caused less noise - it was the style of football from GS and GR!.

I've been living in Australia 3 years and the last game I watched on live TV was Bobby Robsons last in charge. I did go to the Newcastle Wigan game when I visited the UK (which turned out to be Shearers last a STJP) and I thought why even bother.
Now I have decided to invest in Satellite for this season as I expect it to be a cracker. I think Allardyces appointment is long overdue and I believe he along with Ashley with revolutionise the Toon.

For too long we have had old school managers engrained in the Liverpool boot club ideal. Now we have a modern approach, footballing brains and a manager who gets only the best around him. Plus we have cash to spend.

It is time we started investing in players who want to play for the club, so I'm not bothered about big money signings. In my mind the only big money signings we made that paid off were Shearer and Sir Les, people who played for the people.

If Allardyce can get players like that in, rather than over paid celebrities, then I'd be really excited. I remember the days of Keegan when the roar as the players came to kick off made you tingle all-over. I think we can get that back. Go for it Newcastle, you've got everyone behind you.

"But why does it have to be negative every time from some people?"

Because most people are sick of being promised big names only to find out theres some sort of catch ala Owen/Martins or that the name is bigger than the players ability/willingness to perform for nufc, like luque to name one.
I havn't spoke to 1 none nufc fan on football messageboards that hasn't had a laugh at our claim of "signing a big name that will rock the world of football".

Although as always the chronicle has no factual proof to back up this statement, just a claim from a source behind the scenes.

The big name comment seems to me nothing more than sensationalist journalism aimed at selling papers. If its Ashley plan to sign such a player why is it being leaked whilst his public spokesman doesn't mention it as part of his plans.

Excuse me for being cynical but im still waiting for Freddy Shepards "pleasant surprise" to materialize.

Ryder's reply: Glad you got that off your chest Iain.

It is fear you know; fear of being disappointed again. Thats why we all have an opinion and we all think we know THE answer. It is because we are so passionate and because we care so much. The thought of another disappointing season is just too painful to consider. Optimism!

That’s all I ask for from the club, that I’m only 24 and haven’t seen a trophy lifted isn’t my fault, heaven knows there a people twice and thrice my age that have been let down in the past, although a few tin pots were lifted.

We - Newcastle United, had various chances in the last decade to finally “Kick-start something, including a range of disastrous F.A Cup finals and Semi-Finals and European Semi-Finals and a few (High) positions in the league, that suggested that next year would be “Our Year

Two clubs in the Premier League have very similar aspirations at the start of the season, Tottenham Hotspur and our very own Black and White monster, yet both fall, usually by late August, and drop from whatever goal they wish to achieve.

Newcastle now have a chance to mix it with the big boys once again, (Surely we are on a stronger footing that Spurs? And they’ve just paid (Ridiculously over the odd’s) for Darren Bent. £18m?? We could afford that, but I wouldn’t want us to pay it, I would also despair if we bust a gut and got Owen Hargreaves and Geordie Carrick, they are both worth a combined £40m, can you believe that? Three years ago you would have questioned paying £10m for the pair.

Im delighted with the signings so far, Geremi is a great utility player (Who I’d play at Full Back) and Joey Barton is a great competitor who will liven up a stale engine room. Im not blessed with a wealth of knowledge on Rozehnal, but what I have heard is he can play. Viduka can be a new Shearer-type of player, bustling into the box and upsetting defenders and if Owen can prove his loyalty theres 40 goals there straight away (50+ with Martins)

The left side needs an overhaul along with the defence, (I want Downing) but now we have the tools to overhaul the whole squad at once, unlike previous regimes where if Bellamy or Ferdinand got injured, we were up the creek.

We haven’t won anything in my lifetime, that is about to change.

What did I say? Optimism!

Now we have just that. Paul.

Well said Lee, it's time for some positivism. Everything I see and hear from Big Sam exudes what we've missed the most - someone in control of the situation! Although to be fair, up until a month ago, everyone was wholly justified in cracking a sad about those hopelessly baffling clowns who were running the show, from the managers dug out to the boardroom. Sometimes you need a few Nay Sayers to keep it real.

John wrote...

I think to date we have made some good moves in the transfer market. I personally think the way the squad is looking at the moment we have two positive attacking situations, our traditional 4-4-2 or a more adventurous 4-3-3. I think our wing situation is good at the moment, with milner and dyer on the right and n'zogbia and duff on the left. I do however think that after barton and emre we are lacking another midfielder as butt is the only real quality we have there based on last season (he was amazing). Alou diarra is a name that keeps cropping up. He would be a good signing and for as little as £5m, thats good business, he is very imposing.

I think our full back situation needs addressing though. Our right backs I suppose are ok but I would ideally get a replacement for carr. More importantly though we need two left backs. I hope we do not give babayaro another chance. He was such a disappiontment. We were on our knees last season for natural full backs especially on our left side. We should try and get baines. Only £5-6m! Our centre of defence is looking very promising with rozehnal and taylor at the centre I think we won't be leaking that many goals. We probably need one more to supplement our existing crop of ramage and huntingdon. Our goalkeeping department is extremely healthy probably one of the best in the prem! I personally think that Given is undoubtedly the best keeper in the Prem. With the back four he's been protected by compared to Chelsea, Man utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Bolton etc. He has been superb!!!

If we go 4-3-3, I would like to see Martins-Viduka-Owen in attack. Only after all our defensive rebuilding has finished I would like us to get in another imposing target man as viduka may not feature consistently throughout the season through injuries. I'm not convinced with ameobi as being adequate cover for our first choice forwards in terms of quality. However I hope he proves me wrong because I think Sam already said that he is looking to involve him in his future plans, so looks like he's got another year.

Our midfield could be Barton-Emre-Dyer, With dyer given a free role behind the front trio.

I think our squad looks good and if we can build a really good team spirit it will be brilliant. Most of the players know eachother and have been around eachother for a while now. I know we need to be patient which is something I'm not complaining about, we are not miles away.

As for big name signings I can only think of one position which needs significant class and thats our left back position. Geremi's a reliable and hard working player and will do good at right back and is equally as good in midfield.

As for more than one, I think it all depends on what formation Sam chooses. If we play 3 in attack then it might be beneficial getting a big name forward to play with owen and martins and keep viduka as cover maybe? The same applies in midfield, someone to play with barton and emre. But I would like to say that I hope we don't buy a big name player for the sake of firing a warning shot to the rest of the big clubs at the expense of a position which needs strenghtening.

Furthermore, I really hope we keep Martins. Thankfully Owen is staying, thats pleasing but I think we all know that Owen is a nice guy and he was never going to leave Newcastle without properly repaying all the faith and support we have given to him!

Finally can someone please shed some light on this release clause situation. Why don't we offer Martins and Owen a new contract without that clause, or is it not as simple as that? I think with Owen it is dependant upon european qualification but still I think its stupid because next year if we don't get into europe then it will go down by 25%. Thats not good!

But if we do, why not a great defender?

Anyway, if I could personally choose exactly what was to happen before the start of the season I'd go for IN; Baye, Bridge, Boateng and.....a star player? Okay, being unrealistic, maybe Nesta!
OUT: probably just Carr.

Anyway, onto squad personnel. I'm pleased wuth Sam's signings so far. Instead of trying to lavish a small squad with a couple of hoped-for "great players", he seems to building things up with a lot of good ones (some with potential for much more). If I could personally choose anything to realistically happen pre-season, I'd go for Baye, Bridge, Diarra (or Boateng) in, and a couple of promising youngsters - maybe 1 defender and 1 striker. OUT, probably just Carr. And an unrealistic signing, maybe Nesta?

Would you sell him for £7m? Go on, I'll be the broker and take a hefty cut.

P.S: you must be happy with that Alliadiere, I've heard he's got a great goalscoring record. Tell me when you find it, Up the Toon.

I believe after the obvious defensive recruitments(left, right and centre!) we could also do with someone who can play on either wing as duff is out for a while, Nzogbia is still unproven and dont think we should rely totally on Milner just yet (despite his promising campaign last season!) I also believe we need someone with spark in centre midfield(not urgent as we have a few possibilities: dyer, emre, barton, butt, (Geremi?)) But i do think that should dyer be injured again we would be lacking a bit of creativity in midfield (dont really know if barton can do it yet and Emre seemed to be lacking in that department last season!)Also even if dyer is fit i would like to see him challenged for a place in the team for a change!!
In terms of names to these positions I think Beye, Young, Baines or Bridge would be fantasic to our back four and give plenty of strength in depth. I also believe SWP would be brilliant signing, he could play on either wing in my opinion and is a apparently available for around 10 million. I think he would definatley come as he will want to go somewhere that would give him good run of games to get back into england squad and the top teams already have very good competition in his position.
