Are Smith and Cacapa the answer to our prayers this week?

Alan Smith

Well, did we speak too soon?

Or did the wave of nervous energy this week on Tyneside finally spark the new board into the realisation that the squad needed sorted out quick smart?

Either way, the expected arrivals of Alan Smith, Cacapa and maybe now Leighton Baines - saying as we are desperate for a left-back - must be a big step forward.

Losing to a team that only survived relegation to League One on the second to last weekend of last season simply rubber stamped the fact that United's squad lacks depth.

And ironically the loss at Hull could turn out to be the best result of the season, if it was finally the night that Mr Ashley and Mr Mort worked out they must improve the roster at SJP.

To be fair a starting line-up of Given, Carr, Taylor, Rozenhal, Huntington/Babayaro, Milner, Butt, Barton, Duff, Owen and Viduka would probably beat most teams outside of the top four on their day quite comfortably - if they were all fit.

Don't get me wrong, the above team is just one of many starting line-ups that Big Sam could field and chuck in the likes of Geremi, N'Zogbia, Martins, Ameobi, Emre, Solano and Luque - and now Alan Smith and Capaca, all of us have our own views on who should and shouldn't start.

But we know it doesn't work out as straight forward as that, especially when you hit injury trouble.

Last season was the classic example.

United went into the season with a paper thin squad and as soon as the injuries kicked in, it went pear shaped.

It meant that United's board came across as desperate men on August 31st when Antoine Sibierski and Seppe Rossi were ushered in the through the backdoor and then a clapped out Olly Bernard the next day when other sides around Europe were beaming with pride at their squad.

What followed was a 13th place finish, a dreadful FA Cup exit to Birmingham and a pure capitulation against AZ Alkmaar in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup.

Read what you like into the Carling Cup run that saw Portsmouth dumped out in the rain at St James' Park and then a jammy win on pens at soon to be relegated Watford before ultimately bowing out to Chelsea.

Glenn Roeder did his best to raise the side but as much as some of us wanted our former skipper to do the business, it wasn't enough.

Confidence is high that Big Sam can do the same and the arrivals of Mark Viduka, Geremi, David Rozenhal, Joey Barton and hopefully Alan Smith and Capaca are quite heart warming.

But the memory of a team of unknowns at the final whistle at Hull was the warning sign that should the first team regulars get caught up in the crazy injury situation that occurred last term, Newcastle will be bang in trouble.

The message to the board and the manager has to be keep looking, keep recruiting and keep spending please.

The squad may be thin but buying for the sake of buying at over inflated prices is a mug's game - just look at the mackems. I have always liked Smith and he looks a bargain next to Chopra (no disrespect Chops). There is still time. Give Sam and the new owners time. Keep The Faith!

Funny isn’t it that the fans see Glenn Roeder was the cause of our failures last season, yet poor results this season would have been blamed on a poor squad of players.

All we are asking for is a squad of 22 players with competition for each place.
The signing of Smith no doubt signals the exit of Owen in 6 months time.

Big Sam might be buying players but we still need to sort out our defence, buying smith, he might be a good player but we have got enought players from his position, Cacapa would be a good buy because his experience aswel with baines from wigan for left back will be good addition to our squad! CHRIS MORT AND MIKE ASHLEY, NEED TO GIVE BIG SAM SOME MONEY TO SPEND ON PLAYERS THAT OUR SQUAD WILL BE PROUD OF!!! (the new season tickets rubbish, would rather have our books back!!)

We are looking good if we get Baines, but I'd prefer Reading's Shorey. Capaca is an excellent player and Smith will add bite to the midfield. We could even play Luque on the left wing. Many people forget that apart from being a striker, he's an accomplished winger. Looking good for the toon

I was starting to get very concerned by the lack of transfer activity recently. Everyone and their dog knew we needed a major defensive overhaul, and bringing in one centre half just wasn't going to cut it.

Now tho, things are looking up again. Another experienced centre half and one if not two left backs, sees us having a squad capable of competing.

Keep it going in the transfer window, Sam. You're doing a good job so far!

Your comment on the likely first team line-up is a very interesting one.

I think the selection of the first team next season will be easy for Sam - drop whoever hasn't pulled his weight, is out of position regularly, isn't on form, texts his mates during team talks, or feigns injury.

That is what we got when we had a thin squad last season and it drives us all crazy. Hopefully a drop in standards, or a lack of pride and motivation will see a player not even on the bench for the following game...

For the first time in years I'm filled with an inkling of hope about a Newcastle back line that doesn't include Titus Bramble - howay in Rozenhal and Cacapa - who both have high stock and played at serious tournaments internationally! Lyon were one of the best sides in recent Champions league and our forward line is packing more ammo than HMS Invincible, come on the Mags! BIg Sam is a big enough manager to look after the dressing room, so for once let's challenge for something other than best supporters and stadium!

If you look at the squad now, we do need reinforcements, but they need to be good, quality, hard working players. Smith is hard work personified. Cacapa must be a hard worker or how else could he captain a team to the title 5 years running? Baines is a good nippy player, I would love him at the Toon. Then there is this "Drago" from Sevilla, who must'nt be too bad as Sam has a good eye for talent, he may be 31/32, but I trust Sam knows what he is doing. 2 more additions, 1 to Defence and 1 to Midfield, and I believe we should cover all but the very very worst crisis. KEEP THE FAITH!!!

RE:INFLATED PRICES
Roman abromavich is to blame for inflated prices, the f.a for letting him own a club(he paid 150 million for chelsea and which is now worth 500)I dont question Sams ability in the transfer market, and am sure he will make some shrewd buys, but am afraid reality is we need to pay inlfated prices and salaries to comepete at the top, we now have 9 foriegners owning premier league teams and most of them are paying top buck. We either go with the trend of spenders or be mediocre, it simple. So as regards to here and now we just aint cutting the mustard. I say Do away with all foriegn club owners and bring back british owners, whome atleast had grass roots level football at heart and the england football team, foriegners are only simply lining their pockets & a trophy i.e a premiership club. Our national team has dropped a cple of places, in next 5 yrs expect us to drop 20 places. Foriegners are taking over our game.

I have said since our first set of signings (Geremi, Barton, Viduka, Rozenohl), that to compete with the other clubs aiming for the top 10, we needed 4 more signings, which turned to 5 after Dyer looked like leaving.

We have got 2 of those 5. A Defender and a Attack Midfielder/Striker. We still need a versatile midfielder, a LB and an experienced CB.

It looks like we are getting the CB - Ivica Dragutinovic - and possibly the LB - Baines. Now all we need is the versatile midfielder and as a fan, I will be very happy with the squad.

This possible squad is getting the depth it needs in the places it needs, and will surely be challenging for Europe. We can build upon the possible squad next season as it will be a very solid base.

Huntington? Lord, no. I'd sooner switch Carr to left back, or even Ramage! And the jury is surely still out over Duff, a man who doesn't seem to know when to pass or when to try and beat the defender he's just beaten!

Since the takeover I thought we'd be buying masses of mercenary's for over-inflated prices, Sam has done well to get good players in, Without European football we're not first choice for the players we want to be signing so Its probably better to wait and be patient, obviously the squad needs improvement but buying anyone we can get for wads of cash isn't the answer to building a squad and a structured club that we need. a couple of fullbacks and a couple more squad players and we'll be ready for a good domestic season without the distraction of uefa cup games mid week and with a squad getting fitter all the time. Times are good bring, back the optimism!

The Ashley/Mort and BSA combo is already proving much improved from the Fat Fred-Bling Bling days. To answer your question Lee, Smith and Cacapa both seem comfortable playing in front of passionate fans and both have experienced winning their respective leagues last season - nowt wrong there. We all know about Smudger's attitude and with Cacapa being Lyon's captian, it's looking good. Now news that Drago and Enrique on the incoming? Can't wait to get the season started!

cacapa could turn out to be the signing of the season. taylor is still learning and the captain of the french league champions for the last 5 years can only help to imrove him, let alone rozenhall who was voted the best defender in french league last year. thanks big sam for finally sorting out our defence with another great signing in "jose enrique"

That's the way it goes! New signings are a great deal in squad. Even though the majority of fans haven't heard of Cacapa that doesn't mean he's not good.

Big Sam's been great in transfer markets! "Shop" is still open for almost a month and there will be more big names. At least they will be big names after they have played a season in NU:)

If that story i've just been reading about Kieron Dyer not being able to sign for the Hammers is true, then its going to be one struggle of a journey back to the fold of SJP; no matter what sort of car he's driving these days.

I like Sam's signings he has not gone down the 1 big superstar route. We have seen enough of that. The one thing that we will see next season is commitment and dedication to the club, Barton and Smith will see we never give up. Something we haven't had for a while.
2 more players in and we should be OK.

I am very happy with cacapa as he will give us the steel we need in the heart of defence. Hopefully Edmilson will be signed on August 30th/31st to save wages which means he will only be out for another 6 weeks.

Smith is a good addition to the squad. At 6 million it is cheap for a squad player of his calibre. In fact I can see him playing a sixth of our epl games. 6 or 7 games for a player like smith is a good return for a squad player.

The main reason he has been signed is for what he adds to the dressing room plus the fact that he can play in midfield and like ferguson I see him as a defensive midfielder who in the long term might be able to replace player of the season (in my eyes) Nicky Butt.

Six goals a season for a defensive midfielder is a good return.

Bernard, contrary to other reports is also going no where.

Smith may even get a game as a striker but realistically it seems highly improbable because at least 4 out of Ameobi, Owen, Martins, Luque and Viduka would have to be injured.

Don't get too excited. To return to an earlier post of mine Ashley may not yet have supplied any transfer funds. Smith was obviously to be purchased with the fee received from Dyer's sale and Cacapa was another free.

At least it looks like the club are starting to get players in with Drago now expected to be coming in as well, however there's still not much cash being laid out which is puzzling. I have to wonder at Alan Oliver who is refusing to give up on his talk of Oba Martins leaving despite the chronicle running interviews of him being happy and talk of a new contract being drawn up, is he trying to have the paper alienated from st James again?

If we can get 2 more defenders (including Enrique) and one more mf I don't think our squad WILL be that thin. Not when the youngsters have been given more experience now and be able to provide back-up. I'm excited about the signings too, both those done and those possible.
Only injuries make us appear stretched.

Talking of injuries, I can't remember many of Kevin Keegan's Toon stars being injured in the 90's. And surely KK had a thinner squad?

Another digression: there must be more to the Dyer family saga than makes sense on the surface. With his surfeit of funds, can't he move his girlfriend and the saucepan lids up near Newcastle? Seems a bit weird to me!

Great signings so far.
Real gutsy professionals.

I'm worried about reports on the Dyer transfer. If it was us that upped the price after initially agreeing a fee. This had W.Ham wasting time on medicals and negotiating. It may have distracted them from Smith ...? But it's a bit naughty and I'd rather we acted with honour.

I think that poor line up is more likely to lose 5-1 at home to a Championship side than 'easily' beat all the teams than finished ahead of us last season and have spent more wisely this summer.

I'd just like to say I'm 18 years old, I've supported the toon all my life, but growing up young I remember those Keegan days, challenging for the title each season, beating man utd 5-0...

for the first season since about 1997, i rele feel like newcastle utd, our club, has a truly strong squad which most importantly has balance

2 or 3 more signings and there is no reason we cant finish top 6, maybe even in one of those top 4 spaces...

today, im proud to be a newcastle supporter
