Take me to wor leader!

Posted by Lee on August 7, 2007 8:45 AM |

Never before has the captain's armband at St James' Park caused such a stir.

But going into the new Premiership season with wounds patched up and dreams renewed under Sam Allardyce and new owner Mike Ashley, Newcastle United head into the new campaign looking for the man who will inspire them to glory.

We know that the likes of Shay Given, Nobby Solano and Nicky Butt have all done the job before and are more than capable but a new era surely needs a new face, a fresh approach and more importantly a player who isn't hung up about past failures.

The new guy not only has to gee players up this season but try to banish memories of last season, which at times resembled nothing more than a farce and a team that was never going anywhere and always just seconds away from the next crisis.

So who would you have as skip?

Michael Owen threw his hat into the ring early on but many feel a striker is not a suitable position for a striker and he is unlikely to be fit for Bolton in any case.

Then there is Joey Barton who lasted less than a game as captain before a foot injury at Carlisle made sure the Scouse midfielder wouldn't lead the black and whites out at the start of the season.

And with Brazilian new boy Cacapa also not fit for Bolton the inspirational former Lyon skipper is also ruled out..for now...but more of that later.

Yes for now, it would appear that Geremi certainly seems keen on donning the armband at the Reebok Stadium and if that is the case, it wouldn't be a bad shout.

Geremi was all over the field against Sampdoria at the weekend and was still booming out the orders deep into stoppage time after another fine shift in a black and white top.

He's done the job for Cameroon and is clearly a man on a mission after having his good nature put to the test at Chelsea, when he was often dropped back to the bench despite doing little or nothing wrong at Stamford Bridge.

Now with first team football looking like a goer for the man who has guided his country many times, Geremi is hungry to do the job on a full time basis.

And then there is Claudio Cacapa.

How much more can you ask from a man who has captained Lyon to no fewer than five titles in a row?

His English is not good at the moment but the universal language of football could override that small factor in the case of this real winner.

Cacapa has already won the respect of his team-mates at Newcastle simply because of the trophy laden background that comes with him from Lyon.

Clearly the 31-year-old is not going to accept second rate performances from anyone and that could work in United's favour.

And after watching this tribute piece from French fans you may just warm to the three times Brazilian international!

Other choices for club captain would be Owen, Butt, Solano, Barton, Geremi and Given while Mark Viduka has also done the job for his country.

But after playing pass the parcel with armband this season during the friendly programme, where should it end up?

Heres one you missed out Lee; Steven Taylor for captain any one ? Yes before you kick off i know he is young and makes a few mistakes but a geordie captain is not a bad idea.Especially one who plays with so much enthusiasm and is willing to give blood sweat and tears for the cause. This Might be the only shout for the youngster but i think he could do a job...roll on Saturday Jackie
Ryder's reply: I see where you are coming from, but how would Cacapa or Viduka react to one in the ear from such a young player?

GEREMI WOULD BE THE ONE FOR ME,BUT I THINK THE MAIN ISSUE AT STAKE(AT LEAST IT WAS LAST SEASON)IS ONE OF COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY BY SOME PLAYERS WHO QUITE HONESTLY JUST FORGOT THE TEAM ETHIC.
BSA GAVE OUT THAT MESSAGE TO ALL WHO PULLED ON A BWFC SHIRT SO HOPEFULLY IT WILL NOT BE AN ISSUE FROM NOW ON.
LAST NOTE ON THE DIRE SITUATION WITH KIERON,IF HE'S GOT A TOON SHIRT ON, AND HE'S TRYING HIS BEST,BOOING AND THE THOUGHT OF HIS CAR AND HOUSE LOOKING LIKE A SCRAMBLED EGG RECIPE PAGE ISN'T GOING TO HELP HIM AND THE TEAM HE'S PLAYING FOR.MICKMIKE

What about Smithy, if he is going to be playing most games I would consider him an excellent captain.

I would love to see the Armband stay with Geremi after watching his display against Sampdoria. He really did a great job as captain and you could see him giving out orders throughout the entire game. Although after just seeing the YouTube clip of Cacapa I might just change my mind, as soon as he is fit and ready to go give the captaincy to him! Wow, what a reception he got for his last game, you certainly will never see anything like that throughout Titus Bramble's career!!

Probably Barton in the hope that it'll mature him. Also, if he's not banged up or suspended, he's likely to be playing evry game and I'm not sure how many of the other candidates will. I mean, Owen will when he's fit, but when he's fit is another story.

For the first time in a number of years I have to say I have a buzz about our team. We have a manager who recognises that if the back is tight the more you can push forward for those goals. The signings are recognised quality with a sprinkling of young tallent mixed in for flavour. What a combination. Its time for the Toon army to stand up and back ALL of its players as we all know we are famous for (and that includes Dyer..sorry, he's not been the perfect B&W player but you can't knock a guy for wanting to look after his family).

And then we come to the Captain question. I think we have a doubled edged blade on our cards. Who ever takes on the mantel will have to be a rock as if they are not I am concerned that we could end up with 11 captains on the pitch..having so many big players. If there was any doubt on who it should be then to me there is only one player at the moment who meets the criteria..Salano. He has bled B&W for many a season and over the years has done what ever the club has asked him to do on the pitch. I someone in that elk is who you want leading your team out on to the pitch..commanding the respect of not only the players but also th fans.

Stevie Taylor all the way. How old was John Terry when made Chesea captain or Tony Adams for Arsenal.

Players come along every few years that just exude leadership. I would imagine that Tayls will be U21 skip this year and he would be my pick for us too,

In terms of the senior pro's then they'd just have to deal with it. You could always go Given club captaincy for off field responsibility and Tayls on the pitch to ease him into the role.

We dont want a keeper or striker captain and i dont really want a new signing as captain as we wont know if they're good enough to get in side.

That leaves Taylor, Butt and Solano by my reckoning. I wouldn't say either Butt or Solano are guaranteed first teamers so there's another reason for Taylor.

Big Steve Taylor, Cacapa or Owen for me with Joey a roughy...

Tayls coz hes a goerdie who knows what it means to wear the shirt

Cacapa coz he has captained a top european team and must be a great pro

Owen coz he is the true star of the team, good pro

Joey coz plays with spirit...

I would think Owen will be given it if he wants it, I mean he's led his country so must have something. Personaly I would like to see Butt (if he's going to play)or if not Barton. An outside choice would be Taylor with Given also proving popular. Any of them will be an improvement on last season's choice.
Here's one give it to Dyer.... No wait he'll only throw the armband away!!!!!

Goosifer wrote...

I agree with Jackie W and Geordie5 about giving Taylor the armband but why does everybody think he's a Geordie? He's from Greenwich!!

He'd definitely be a good choice and I've been saying that to my mates since before Parker got the job.

we need experience first and foremost gonna be a lot of new faces come saturday so my vote goes to cacapa who has done it at the highest level
taylor is our captain in waiting and without doubt will be within few year but think this season would be too much responsibility would rather him concentrating on improving his game

its gonna be a good year
new owner and board(we miss you fred....like hell we do)new manager and certainly no complaints at any of new faces and a new hope in the hearts of every newcastle fan which beats black n white that the time has come to give us the team we know we can be
mackems to laugh at 9 mil for keeper thats gonna get beaten more than guests at guantanamo bay

smoggies down here already admitting defeat eyeing relegation nothing new there knowing their joy of finishing above us is over and the grim reality of being crap had set back in

this is season where we turn st james park back into a place where away fans/teams fear to come and go away with nothing a cauldron of 50000 geordies united making the 12th man again letting the scum down the road hear the best supporters in the land shout on a successful team
we all rested our voices last year for one reason or another time to lubricate those vocal chords in the bars around the toon
and hopefully starting on saturday the toon army will roar again

BRITISH BY BIRTH
GEORDIE BY THE GRACE OF GOD

Geordie5 wrote...

Goosifer just to answer your question Tayls and his family moved to Whitley Bay when he was very young, less than a month old I believe. So he might not be a Geordie by birthplace but I wouldn't have thought that matters when he's been brought up here.
