It's Milner time for KD

Posted by Lee on August 7, 2007 12:56 PM |

He must have cut a lonely figure on the training ground on his return.

But Kieron Dyer is back on Tyneside and back with one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Without any doubt the player will be sulking but perhaps he should count his blessings he still has such a fantastic career.

True, we all know that he wants to be back with his family and whatever has gone on between Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley and his opposite number at West Ham must be a nightmare for Kieron...but is it his worst nightmare?

And how much sympathy will he get from the Geordie public who have paid his wages through one injury comeback after another?

Dyer will still pick up silly money from Newcastle whether he is in limbo or not until he gets a new club or until the end of his contract.

Logically, Dyer's response should be to pull on a black and white shirt and play for the cause, show he's a good player and make sure he bags his move to London in January.

If he doesn't think he can do that, then perhaps he should ask James Milner for some advice.

Not so long ago, Milner headed for Aston Villa thinking he'd been kicked out of Toon by Glenn Roeder and got as far as Martin O'Neill's office before being told to turn around and get back because a deal for Mark Viduka had fallen through!

But instead of sulking, instead of needing his own space, Milner rolled his sleeves up and got on with the job, scored some great goals and showed he was a good player.

On Tyneside players CAN go from zero to hero as quickly as they go from hero to zero.

Nicky Butt did it last year.

Booed on to the field for his Cardiff antics against Villarreal in a friendly and then cheered off after two headers secured a draw to lay the foundations for a great season.

If you are staying Kieron, you know what you have to do. It's a case of how much you want to do it for the public.

Yes, Lee, but where do you play him?

Obviously not in the forward line or the back four and if you play him in midfield you will have to replace someone who really wants to play for us. People like Milner, Solano, Geremi, Butt, N'Zogbia, Smith, Pattison and Emre and Duff when they are fit, and a host of Academy kids who would die for a chance to play

This lad has picked up a fortune already from us and we have had little return from him. The exciting runs that he occasionally made when he was fit - and that was not often - rarely resulted in a goal for him or a goal made for someone else. We have waited patiently for years for him to fulfil the promise that he showed as a youngster and unhappily it never happened.

No one believes all that guff about wanting to be nearer his family. Some of us work miles away from where we want to be but are unable to for financial reasons, and at the wages he has been on for the last few years most of us would work at the North Pole.

His behaviour whilst on Tyneside indicates to most of us that he wants to be nearer Stringfellows than his family. My step-father worked all his life away from home and cycled back each week-end sometimes over a hundred miles to see his family. It was what he had to do. In any case the trip from the East End of London to Ipswich is not what you call convenient. If being with his family is now what he wants I suggest he tries Ipswich Town and pays back his wages to the Toon to compensate for his transfer fee.

The sooner he goes the better.

Can't we offload him to Boro?

Kieron needs to go. I'm sure we could chip in and add to his rumoured 60 grand a week salary and he could buy his way out. Of course, he might have to stop (allegedly) burning money in front of fans on the Quayside if he wants to keep his Hummer running.

Can Kieron do a Milner? If only played with anything like Milner's consistency. It also seems odd to suggest someone with Dyer's experience should follow the lead of Milner, but if it gets you through the night...

Where exactly would you play Dyer? Ahead of Milner on the right (a position he doesn't like; something he has demonstrated a number of times over the last few years by his innate inability to stick to the task, preferring instead to wander (often aimlessly) inside and across the pitch, leaving Nobby and Carr to play on the wing and at full back, something which neither of them (and especially Carr) are capable of doing for 90 minutes). I wouldn't put him ahead of Nobby either. Ironically, Nobby's the one player who he seems to show any understanding with. Unfortunately, Nobby's equally good with Milner.

We could stick him up front. He did score some good goals last season, but would he get ahead of Owen, Viduka, Martins, Smith or even Shola? Not in my book. Besides, I also recall with embarrassment the number of efforts he should've scored and missed.

So that leaves a more central midfield position. Could he hack it left of centre (another position he's not fond of (60 grand a week and he's not fond of it?!) instead of Butt or Emre or N'Zogbia or Duff who prefers to come inside... Clearly, he's not in line for right central midfield. Barton and Geremi must be ahead of him there.

The club has, in its indulgence of his behaviour and attitude, created something of a monster. I feel sorry for him having medical problems that are not of his own making, but his attitude on and off the pitch is another matter and has served to alienate many supporters. Football-wise, he doesn't seem to have developed at all so why you hope he might be able to do a Milner is beyond me.

NO NO NO..... dyer is back!!! Newcastle should have taken the money and run as fast as they could from london. £6 million for a heartless player and one that is no where near a world class player is a great offer. He had potential when he arrived but we have been saying that for 8 years now, when will people learn that he will never do it on the pitch. He cant cross, head or slip a perfect ball through the middle. He can chase shadows and run around like a headless chicken though. Dyer you are the weakest link..... goodbye!!

I think, unfortunately, you can add the media to this.

He needs to go. Now.

Just get rid, the lads had best part of 8 years to prove himself & I'd say he's a worse player than when he first arrived!!! He scores no goals, makes no goals & can't tackle, wow what a midfield player he is!!! If his family is so important to him & means more than anythig then why doesn't he pay the £2m himself? He's had enough out of our club & has given back.... eh nothing. Would he do that? Don't hold your breath!!

Am I the only one who doesn't hate Kieron Dyer? Yes he's always injured and yes some of his past decisions have been questionable. However this does not detract from the fact that he's a damn good player. Personally I do think that it's the right time for him to leave. After he scored against Watford on the last day of the season you could see he was finished. However that does not excuse the disgraceful scenes that greeted him when he left the stadium. If he stays I'll support him, like I will support EVERY player that pulls on a Black and White shirt this season
Ryder's reply: In an era where everybody in the public eye these days is a target for abuse, that is quite refreshing to hear JC.

Get rid. How stupid not to take £6m for him! If he stays till the January window he will have cost us around 20 weeks wages at somewhere between £60 and £80k a week. Work it out, that's between £1.2 and £1.6m. Really good business eh?

On the pitch, he has flattered to deceive for eight years, been injured for a third of that and shows no loyalty. Wants to be near his family? What a load of b....cks!

Freddie had no commercial nouse, I had hoped Ashley would show some.

He has pace to burn though, and unfortunately not many of our midfielders do.

He'd be in my team every time, as would Martins for the same reason.

We need to give him a chance, though (for the umpteenth time, I know) or we are "cutting our own nose off to spite our face"

His transfer value can only fall if we give him a hard time and his performances are poor.

Just a suggestion but shouldn't his wife and kids come North! Apart from that the money he is earning he could probably transfer by helicopter to and from his family home.
Many a wife has had to move to accommodate her husbands career when he is the major earner so why is this such a problem - Newcastle is not Siberia!!

Its about time that we are not soft touches where money is concerned.

We would have to pay 8 mill for a player like Dyer.

Let him prove his worth and buckle down to some work.
Sam's comments were excellent and honest.

Get on with the job, Keiron, youre paid enough now its pay back time, or are you afraid of the good competeion for places.

It's definitely a "love him or hate him" situation with Dyer! Financially, though, the whole thing is ridiculous in that he should be thought of as extremely lucky to have his career. And, yes, why can't his girlfriend and kids move close to him???
If Dyer stays and re-commits himself to the Toon then I feel that we have enough quality in mf (I never really think of Dyer as a winger) but if he goes then we could really do with squeezing in one more mf signing before the end of August. Let's see what happens!

is it the push over him to off can make it better? what about other players who want to commit their future in there? with 8 yrs staying no respect at all from fans will make it worse for other players, i think. so please just support him fully to do the best out of him and we will get the whatsoever you all called pay back actions.

every critism aimed at dyer he has to accept but he has quality and pace(finishes like a girl at times though sorry girls)6 mil would have been an acceptable off load but not to be
keiron has seen and knows full well if he puts the graft in he will get the full backing of every one of us
with the players coming in at minute he probably wont get in starting XI but we have lacking depth in squad quality and he will be an asset coming off the bench
3 days before the start of what could be a new dawn for the toon time for critism to stop no matter if some deserved and do what we do best....being the best damn supporters in the country, being united dispite the seemingly endless under achieving tag..So starting against bolton saturday no matter who is out there in a back and white shirt...
UNITED FOREVER

Firstly lets get one fact straight.....we are not one of the biggest clubs in europe. By consistently finishing outside any kind of european sot, winning nothing for a lifetime and treating fans with complete disrespect.

I think we only reinforce that feeling with the ridiculous way we conducted the west ham transfer. How on earth can you up the price at the last minute by 2m and then be angry at the other side for not rolling over. Amateurish nonsense.

Dyer should have gone but looks set to stay for a while now. If he doesnt play noone will want him in jan so we have to give himgame time and hope he stays fit. Not just to advertise his services but because he offers a genuine threat going forward. The pace he possess is not present with any of our other midfielders and we need to support the front men

Anyway, enough about KD, he has left in his mind, so we can expect nothing from him.

West Ham the waste of space before they realise how much of a drop out he really is. however if he has to stay then the fans should get off his back for the sake of the club!
