Club or country?

Posted by Lee on September 11, 2007 9:12 AM |

Do you actually care if Steve McClaren takes England to Euro 2008?

Being patriotic and being a Newcastle United fan can be a costly business.

There's nothing better than watching one of your players smash one in the back of the net for his country and then be able to proudly say in the bar: "he's one of ours."

But then again, there's nothing worse than watching your star striker go down clutching his shattered knee and watching your season go down the pan in July, you kna like we did in last summer's World Cup when Michael Owen and the Toon's hopes of glory were both stretchered off in one go!

Owen isn't the only one to get hurt on international duty as Graeme Souness also knows very well.

Our leaky defence appeared to have found the answer in rookie Steven Taylor two years ago and things were looking up.

Cue, the international week curse!

And Taylor, after somehow colliding with Carlton Cole in England Under-21 training, managed to pop his shoulder out of position and rule him out for a couple of months.

Well that was a couple of months until Newcastle boss Graeme Souness sent him out patched up and it popped out again to rule him out for the rest of the season.

Stephen Carr is another to get hurt on international duty last season when he picked up a thigh injury on Eire duty.

That left then boss Glenn Roeder to say: "The club doctor Roddy McDonald actually told me to sit down and take a deep breath when he told me that Stephen had got injured.

"It made me so angry - and I’m still angry.

Roeder is probably still angry now when he looks back, after all, the injury to Owen probably did cost him his job in the long run.

And although England qualifying the World Cup or European Championships can actually make or break your summer, it's safe to say that most of us spend international breaks with fingers crossed and simply hoping all of our lads get through to be ready for domestic duty.

It's so far, so good this time around with no injuries to report.

And for once, the break wasn't a welcome relief from watching Newcastle struggle in the Premiership, this time players didn't want it to come.

So there you go, even if we get all of our players through safely this week for Pride Park you can still blame the international break if we get beat for disrupting our rhythm and focus!

WHAT COMES FIRST FOR YOU?

64.000 bottles of Broon Ale Question! I quite agree with your comments Lee, it's now becoming more obvious by the other managers fears that this is a very serious issue that is not going to go away until the FA come out of there Southern shells and split the season into acceptable time frames for International games. Only then can the likes of Owen and the illustrious band of money makers stand a fighting chance of fending off these serious injuries, or they play with their wallets in their back pockets, then it won't hurt their backsides when they fall over!

Definitely club, after all anyone with any sense knows that the national team are not going to win anything for the next five years.

I think we’ll be ok for Monday night at Derby.

On the Roeder issue, the thing that stands Allardyce in better stead than he, is that Big Sam has Viduka, Ameobi, Owen, Smith and Martins to call upon, a far cry from the “If Owen gets injured, were buggered scenario.

I will always put club ahead of country, because picture the scene, England lift the Eoro 2008 trophy, cue mass hysteria (And Knighthoods all round) for a bunch of overrated players, OR, Newcastle return from Wembley with the F.A Cup, Tyneside stops for a week, Black and White shirts line the streets, Sam Allardyce is drunkenly carried round town and the cup is lost and found by some local boy’s hound?? (Dogs name- Shearer)

I haven’t seen the club lift a trophy yet (I wasn’t even at the game when we were presented with the Intertoto Cup Scroll) the sight on the final whistle at Wembley would be completely insane if we were to win something.

It’s long overdue, but I hoping it happens soon, were on the right track, Im not trying to say we can have triumph for both club and country, but lets just hope International success doesn’t get in our way!!

Paul.

I thought Newcastle was a country of its own? Oh well!

For quite some time I have lost all interest in England. Even more so now that we actually have a team at Newcastle that knows what playing for each other means. Englands loss (big mistake) is Newcastle United's gain!

Funny you bring this topic up Lee as ive had it with quite a few people lately but they all say the same thing... 'TOON FIRST!'

If I had to choose between England winning the World Cup or Newcastle winning a raffle I'd still go for Newcastle. Mind, I wish McClaren every success in the world because it'll keep the FA's eyes off Allardyce at a time when for the first time in about ten years I'm actually proud of how my club's being run on and off the pitch.

For the fans the"Toon" will always come first. However it is natural for players to want to represent their country (unless of course your name is Carragher)Also Rooney,Gary Neville plus others can't even sing the National Anthem. How much does playing for their COUNTRY mean to them?-absolutely nothing!!
What disturbs me is the African Nations Cup and the players we will lose for many weeks. Now that could be the biggest problem we have to face.

As a 76 year old.Newcastle first, and last. In friendlies. Young players learn a lot.when playing for England. If you do not sing the anthem you should be transported to Wales.I went to every home and away in the fiftys,But never had a cup final ticket. Good luck lads. Newcastle FOREVER.

Newcastle United forever!! Of course I want to see England do well, but there is nothing worse than watching our players get hurt while playing for the England side. After Owen scored his second today, I was on pins and needles waiting for him to be substituted! Howay the lads!

don't really care about England, as long as our players come through the game without harm then thats good enough for me. If we had no players in the England team and they were playing Nigeria with Oba upfront, i would want to see Oba/Nigeria win the game.

FlapjackJoe wrote...

To be honest, personally I have no interest in international football, so it's obviously the club first. I'd still like to see international breaks during the league season getting abolished, and all the qualifying games getting played during the summer break. They'll still play the same number of games, so arguments that players won't get to rest during the summer is unfounded. The league seasons will be shorter, if players DO get injured on international duty, they have 2 months to recover before their next league game instead of 2 days, and there will be far less club v country disputes...
