We want six, we want six!

Posted by Lee on September 13, 2007 10:43 AM |

He's probably one of the top five strikers in the world, he's in form, has five goals in his last four games, is finally free of injury - and better still he's all ours!

Michael Owen could not have arrived on Tyneside quietly two years ago but apart from his early glut of goals for the black and whites, the Owen era was in danger of turning into a disaster.

Five goals have breathed new life into Owen after an injury ravaged two years and goal number six in five games could be imminent.

The pint sized striker is finally back and perhaps now all of that time spent wrapping him in cotton wool is paying off.

Whether it's been a broken foot, shattered knee or niggly thigh, Owen's absence has been about as welcome in Newcastle as a booze ban!

Now though, perhaps his £17million move from Real Madrid is finally paying off.

Our first taste of action came against Barnsley, which nobody could really get carried away with but from a striker's point of view (not that I'd know), any goal is a good goal and it has clearly lit a black and white touch paper.

Owen's magic then turned that 0-0 draw against Wigan into a sweet 1-0 victory and although he set off for England duty with records and Euro qualification in his sights, for once it has worked out in the favour of Newcastle United.

For once he doesn't come back injured or with confidence dented.

For once we can head to an away game looking forward to the real prospect of three points.

And for once, we go into the game wondering which strikers will be partnering Wor Micky at Pride Park.

Yes, Owen, after a goal of the month contender against Israel and a cracking brace against the Russians arrives back in training with his tail up and gunning for Derby County.

Yeah, yeah we're facing a wounded animal because they were thrashed 6-0 at Anfield.

But really we should be wiping the floor with the Rams, who are destined for a season of struggle after failing to get to grips with life in the big league.

And with Owen in breathtaking form you wouldn't bet against anything but more goal action at Pride Park.

I must admit little Mick is slowly winning me round ! I was Owens biggest critic during the summer when he only commited himself to us after the so called "big 4" had did all there spending. To be honest I couldnt give a rats ass about England I just hope that last night gives him confidence and we can finally see him fully fit and playing 30 plus games a season for us.

For Newcastle to finally say they have turned the corner, they must TROUNCE Derby County.

Now, far from me to be unhappy with a 1-0 win, but we should be winning comfortably and getting our goal difference up a bit.

Im not expecting six, but I think three is more than capable of being done, with Owen on form, Martins looking the part and Viduka bruising his way through Derby’s defence, with Milner and N’Zogbia on the wings, Butt and Geremi backing them up, SURELY slip ups are avoidable?

Newcastle United have had a canny knack of “balls-ing it up, especially away from home, over the years, but this season under Big Sam, Im more confident than ever.

Paul.

as ive said all along to the doubters, "wor micky" is one of the best strikers in the world. his record speaks for itself and i have no doubt he will become englands best ever goalscorer.
"he hasnt got the pace anymore" are comments im sick of hearing, when shearer lost his pace did that stop him being a world class striker? NO!
now he is getting back to his usual goalscorin self, hes going to do what he always does, make people eat there words and with 5 goals in 4 games there mouths are quite full already. just wait til big sam realizes the potential of playing him with martins! aaah man i canit wait

Previously on the Lee Ryder show you lot showed no interest in the England set up and were arguably saying shove it we would rather stick with the toon , as players run the risk of injuries...But after last night sureley you would agree that the two belters the boy Owen bagged have given us geordies a new lot of argument ammunition to use against the rest of the country . This has been sadly lacking since the international retirement of Shearer, this probably contributed to the lack of interest in England, but 32 mins into the game last night and hey ho our boy has won it for the rest of the country. I have my tickets for Monday and never mind we want six i am going for a demolition job on the rams with Mick bagging a hat trick,,it showed last night that all the boy needs is a bit of confidence and bang, the jobs a good un. 4-0 ...Happy days Jackie W

I personally think that Michael Owen is a shifty, effete, goal munching dullard, with a grating voice and action man eagle eyes!
Let's see him score 30 plus goals for the next four seasons, win us a bit of silverware, and then he can justify his smarm, self importance and hype.

Meercats haha -- priceless.
Calm down calm down everybody.Mike is having a little purple patch & I hope it continues into the Derby game but lets forget 4-0's & 6-0's. Remember he had the likes of Gerrard, Barry (excellent), Joe Cole, and Wright Phillips providing the ammo the other night. Not to mention the underrated Heskey who had a good game also. Our midfield creativity doesn't go anywhere near the England midfield 4.Everyone can see that is where our slight weakness is at the moment -- not creating enough chances.I'm not sure if it lies in the calibre of midfielder we have and it's not likely to improve much or they need a bit more time to gel as a team and once they do the chances will come thick and fast. I'm hoping it's the latter.I'll be hoping for 3 points in any shape or form and as I feel Kenny Miller is a cert to score for them -- 2-1 to us will do me fine.

The game against Derby will show us if the new NUFC is heading in the right direction. Old NUFC would go into a game like this one and loose it easily...Bringing fans into despair, and then put in a relatively decent performance against one of the stronger teams next week. And so it would continue until the season fizzled out. Newcastle in the middle of the table, having achieved nothing, going nowhere. This coming game (and the next ones) will also be extremely interesting from another point of view: They will show us Allardyce's qualities as a manager. I think he has bought wise and well and strengthened the squad, but can he keep them all happy? He's facing quite a handful of selection problems, and to name just a few of them:
1.Keepers: In my opinion Harper deserves the place against the Rams. He's been an extremely loyal player in a football world where money seems to be the only thing players care about. And, he has played well when he finally got one of his few chances. Would benching Harps now be the final straw for him? Then again, you don't put a keeper of Given's calibre on the bench for that many weeks before he decides enough is enough...Solve this one Big Sam and impress me!
2.Defence: Will Sam play Taylor? Rozenthal and Cacapa seem to be a solid pair and we've got alternatives in the fullback positions. Maybe Sam'll bench Taylor for this one? And by doing that will give him a message (You're talented, you're a Geordie, but you still can't press me into giving you exactly the kind of money you think you're worth. I'm the boss, I call the shots).
3.Strikers: How happy will the one, or eventually the two, benched strikers be?
And I haven't even mentioned the midfield...
If Newcastle continue to win games, and Sam can keep this better and bigger squad all happy. Then Sam has shown us he's the one to lift us forward. Exciting times ahead!

Can I just say something about this Taylor contract situation. He needs to remember that he is still young and even if he is a good player and potentially top class, he's not there yet. I understand he wants a good deal and if players like milner and charlie are getting more then i agree that he should get at least a matching contract. However if the weekend stories are true about him wanting to leave in the next transfer window, then GOOD RIDDANCE. He's supposed to be a geordie through and through. If he is going to act like a spoilt brat already then imagine how he might be in five years time..... look at lampard at chelsea, they should have called his bluff and told him to go. I think Taylor is great and is one of my favorite players but how dare he say he will quit the club that gave him his life in football. Stop this kind of thing now Taylor before you upset too many fans at the club your meant to love.
