Window slams shuts with Toon playing big part

By Lee Ryder on Sep 1, 07 12:00 AM

LATE NIGHT FOR BIG SAM BUT A FAR CRY FROM THE FARCE AT ST JAMES' PARK EXACTLY 12 MONTHS AGO

Newcastle United manager Sam Allardyce can't be too unhappy with his summer shopping after the window finally slammed shut when Friday night turned into Saturday morning.

Fair enough some of us were probably propping up a bar somewhere or mortal drunk in the Bigg Market deciding on a pizza or a kebab.

But the crazy world of football today means that for two days a year football fans are running round like headless chickens to see which transfers have gone through before the transfer window closes for business.

Indeed over 350 deals went through on transfer deadline day and Newcastle were as involved as anyone.

The Toon's transfer deals were based around Abou Faye arriving from Bolton and Habib Beye coming in from Marseille with Nobby Solano's move to West Ham hanging on a successful outcome for the defensive pair.

To be fair to Big Sam he got most of his business done earlier in the summer and after bagging the likes of Joey Barton and Mark Viduka early on, which now seems like a life time away, before David Rozehnal, Geremi, Jose Enrique, Cacapa and Alan Smith entered the fray and then Abou Faye and Habib Beye also followed.

OK, perhaps the Toon squad is still lacking depth but you get the feeling that most of the bad eggs are long gone and the remaining players are all tapped into Allardyce's vision for the future.

And while Sky Sports Jim White got his knickers in a twist while Steven Naismith and Gary O'Neil were making late moves to Rangers and Boro you couldn't help but applaud the efforts of our manager for making sure the bulk of his transfer work had been completed before the late rush.

The late rush is a bit like going to Tescos just before closing time, the bread is cheap but it's a bit hard and isn't really worth eating unless you warm it up in the microwave and the milk will last but it won't last too long, but then again it is 14p for a gallon.

Sour grapes?

You bet it is. This time last year it could not have been a more desperate situation and nobody wanted to go through that again.

Glenn Roeder had signed just Damien Duff and Oba Martins before Man U reserve Seppe Rossi and a man called 50p head in Antoine Sibierski came through the door with minutes left on the transfer clock after a failed night of trying to sign players that nobody else wanted.

The team was already struggling and as much as Sibi gave us the odd smile in his time in Toon, we were never going to win anything with the Frenchman leading the line, remember the miss against Sheff United?

This time around Allardyce has his solid looking if not superstar set of troops ready for the next few months.

And on top of that Big Sam has managed to hold on to Michael Owen and Oba Martins, which has to be a big plus for the Toon Army.

Going out today was West Ham bound Nobby Solano - on an afternoon flight from Newcastle Airport to the smoke - and Paul Huntington, who is on his way to Leeds.

The Peruvian is gone for good this time and the young defender clearly not assured of a future with the club despite showing decent progress in the last nine months after making his debut at Blackburn at the end of last year.

But while the rest of the Premiership clubs traded their bit part players late into the night the Toon Army prepared for Wigan knowing that the squad should be more than capable of challenging for a place in the top six up until January when perhaps more additions - possibly Edmilson - will arrive to seal a return to Europe.

Whey at least that's the plan like!

Great shame Nobby's gone. Even at 32 he gave the team some vision it sorely lacks. For my money, Nobby and Charlie were the best players on the pitch against Barnsley. Kind of sad he doesn't warrant more of a send-off than Dyer, whose "accomplishments" were racked up in this blog.
He certainly deserves more.

Why has Paul Huntington been allowed to leave? Big things were expected of him, and with our depth of squad it seems a little strange that a versatile player has gone. Any further news on this deal?

for once players signed this year are quality without inflated price tags players who improve our squad.. unbeaten in friendlies or competitive games

we have strength in depth in all departments now faye and beye deadline day quality
last night hansen spouting on motd spurs only ones capable of challenging "big 4" shearer sat quiet(smug grin of course)
we look solid at the back competitive in the middle(emre, barton and duff to return) up front we will score goals no matter which front 2 sam chooses

good pre season(bye bye freddie and dougie) good start to season(personally the ex mackem goal for boro soured it for me) and positive thoughts for rest of year and wouldnt it be great for hansen to once submit and give us credit

Yep a gr8 bag of signings for the Toon, but I'm really sorry to see a lad with the potential of Huntingdon let go, I predict he will be a big success at Leeds, certainly in League 1.

And what about WHU? They seem to hvae their player valuations all wrong, or their scouts never watched the ex-toon players properly. Only Bellamy(purely on playing ability, not as a person/colleague!), and Nobby would still be in my toon 11. OK they paid L'pool decent money for Bellars, but £1/4 m for Nobby? they got a real diamond bargain there! I predict that with good training and coaching he will still be a premiersip player for another 3 seasons, and don't forget class is always evident even with older players, e.g Gary Speed, another who was let go far too soon.

Chuffed to bits with the signings we've brought in so far. Apart from one or two like!

Rozehnal and Cacapa look class. We payed less for him than the mackems did for higginbotham, Idiots!

Viduka his class self. Barton will get us goals and alot of assists I can imagine, N'zogbia looking back to what he was like a few years ago. Harper doing really well. Bought a right AND left back which i'm delighted about. Overall the quality of player brought in which fgoes to about 14 million all together if you include income, outcome and all that. Impressed by Big Sam. Keep it up big lad.
