Barton return Spurs on Geordies in Toon victory

NEWCASTLE UNITED continued their superb hot streak at St James' Park by taking care of Tottenham Hotspur.

The Magpies had started the night slowly but an Oba Martins goal lit the black and white touch paper before strikes from Cacapa and James Milner cancelled out Robbie Keane's strike.

United began the game with Emre in the middle of the park alongside Nicky Butt but returning star Joey Barton had to be content with a place on the bench.

The reshuffle meant that Charles N'Zogbia began wide on the left and Geremi wide right with James Milner dropped to the bench.

But there was a boost for Shola Ameobi who appeared in the first team pool for the first time since the Carling Cup tie at Arsenal.

For the visitors Jermaine Jenas was roundly booed on his return to his old club and he left the so called goldfish bowl a dejected figure.

And it was his former employers who came closest to open the scoring when on 12 minutes a corner from N'Zogbia on the right was headed off the post by in-form Abdoulaye Faye - who could only watched as the ball came crashing off the upright.

With Michael Owen back in the starting line-up for the first time since September 23 against West Ham, it was all eyes on the England striker.

And he should have opened the scores on 27 minutes when after Emre had played him through his one on one with Radek Cerny resulted in the Spurs goalie tipping it round the post.

United's next chance came nine minutes later when Pascal Chimbonda chopped down N'Zogbia 25 yards from goal to earn a great chance from a set piece.

Geremi curled the ball low right footed but his low chance went wide of the goal frame.

Three minutes before the interval Jose Enrique picked out Martins but the Nigerian's shot was saved by Cerny before Owen's follow up shot was cleared frantically by the Spurs defence.

Yet just moments later it was the combination of the Spaniard and the African that paid off when the full-back's long ball was latched on to by Martins before he rifled it left footed through
Cerny's legs to make it 1-0 to United.

Newcastle changed things a little bit at the start of the second period when James Milner replaced N'Zogbia but it was the Turk Emre who provided he inspiration for goal number two.

A second goal came just five minutes in when Emre's corner was flicked on by Faye and Cacapa's bullet header gave Cerny no chance as the Brazilian scored his first goal for United.

Yet Spurs clawed their way back into the game before the hour mark.
A clipped ball from the right wing from Didier Zokora found Darren Bent but the England international's header hit the post before Robbie Keane applied the finish past his Eire team-mate Shay Given.

With 20 minutes left Barton made his debut bow when he replaced to the delight of the home crowd with his sheer presence lifting the home crowd.

However, it was the other replacement Milner who gave United breathing space when after a poor clearance from Younes Kaboul the Yorkshireman let fly with a left foot scorcher from 18 yards out.

Milner had vowed to get his first Toon goal of term before the game with his last strike coming nine months ago and he took his chance in excellent fashion after scoring his first of the campaign for the England Under-21s last week.

Still made hard work of that like
Reckon expectations on Joey B are too high.
And Owen wont be happy with clean sheet

Great performance all round, Butt continued his superb season and was rightly man-of-the-match.

MAYBE THERE WOULD OF BEEN A PLACE FOR TAYLOR IF HE CUT OUT ALL HIS MISTAKES, ANOTHER BRAMBLE (EXCEPT A LOT BETTER) TONS OF POTENTIAL BUT TO MANY COSTLY MISTAKES. CANT SEE HIM GETTING BACK IN AT THE MOMENT.

FINE PERFORMANCE FROM BUTT, MARTINS AND ENRIQUE AND YET AGAIN A SOLID BACK 4. LOTS OF HARD WORK GOT THROUGH BY BOTH STRIKERS. WELL DONE LADS. BRING ON READING...

Well it ended up a good result albeit after a somewhat disjointed performance.
The back four were excellent as was Butt.
I couldn't quite fathom the rest as we stuttered from midfield onwards with Geremi like a fish out of water on the right although he tried hard, and more often than not Owen was on the right wing going nowhere. We were at home to a Tottenham team devoid of confidence and solid defensive capabilities yet because of our set up we struggled to get going for large parts of the game.
Allardyces lack of imagination really worries me but make no mistake-we are moving in the right direction.
Given 7,Beye 7,Faye 8,Cacapa 8,Enrique 8,N'zogbia 6,Emre 6, Butt 9,Geremi 7,Martins 7, Owen 6 subs Rozenhal 6,Milner 7, Barton 5

Hey, that’s a lovely bridge, never seen that before!

Emre was my Man of the Match, last night and it’s a partnership I hope we see more of with Nicky Butt’s defensive strength allowing the ‘Little Turk’ all the space in the, er Goldfish Bowl to pull string’s.

And weren’t there a lot of long strings against Spur’s? Even Berbatov sulking on the touchline refusing to warm-up properly, Spur’s have a phenomenal attack, but last night they must have visited the dentist before kick-off, how a side with Keane, Berbatov, Defoe, Lennon, Malbranque etc, are in the relegation zone baffles me, but really I can’t see Jol being in charge by tea-time today.

Hey, that’s a lovely bridge, never seen that before!

Englands Owen had a very poor game actually and was brought off and replaced with Joey Barton, great to see him get his debut at last, in stark contrast to Jermaine Jenas, who showed great promise in his first season here, but never got anywhere near that kind of promise, it was great that we got £9m for him, Barton however is a nice change, he’s Emre and Butt rolled into one, similarities with Roy Keane? You bet! If ever Geremi doesn’t play, there’s a captain right there.

There was a ten minute spell last night where I thought that we had cracked and gone to pieces, but up stepped James Milner, in him and N’Zogbia, we have two fantastic potentials and with Emre, Butt and Barton, we finally have a midfield that should push us on to great things.

Hey, that’s a lovely bridge, never seen that before!

Paul.

I though Caçapa was man of the match.
The man seems able to be able to instantly control high balls on his chest and find a team mate with a pass.

Taylor has a lot more competition in defence this year and probably needs to learn a bit more before taking his place in our current defence.
He should be following Caçapa around the training ground because that's the man to learn off.

I feel BS has made a rod for his own back by making Geremi captain. Midfield looking strong now and with everyone fit Geremi doesn;t get a look in for me. Zog and Duff(when he returns) look after the left, Butt Emre and Barton the centre and Milner the right. I just can't see BS dropping him and hence admitting the error. Maybe we can hope he is ok at keeping the bench warm.

Thank God we didn't see Shola!!!!

A message to Big Sam, 'Remember Oba when next time Owen is injured, because he is the main forward for the Toon. Can shoot with any foot, not many can do that these days, and never stops running. Owen, well, 'Deal' in January.Hopefully the team will play as good on Saturday against Reading and continue up the table. Didn't even feel sorry for Jenas when he was booed every time he went near the ball. He got what he deserved by the boo boys, looked as though he WAS actually in a goldfish bowl, and no hope of getting out of it.
He was a useless misfit when he was at SJP and he is still the same in a white shirt.

Is Paul Patterson "Stevie Wonder in disguise"? I know it's all a matter of opinion but Emre was moderate last night.I am a supporter of Emre and hope he gets a good run in the team, but last night's man of the match?-never in a month of Sundays.
Hey that's a lovely bridge-never see anything but I just called to say I love you.

I agree with Mark Green. Cacapa is a first class example of the complete defender. He was excellent as was Butt.I would also like to give special mention to Enrique. He is going to be huge on Tyneside.
Don't forget Blyth Spartans on Setanta Thursday night!!

Just had to throw this one in for our fellow NE teams. Despite Newcastle playing 1 game less that both of them, the toon has more points that them both put together...does that not send out a statment about the top team in the Northeast.

Top performance by every player except Owen I am afraid last night..he is going to have to take aleaf out of Martins book and put more work in off the ball. His days of sitting around waiting for the ball are long gone. Come MO shows us what your made of and that you are worthy of wear in the B&W colours. If Owen does not up his work rate I can not see him getting anything more than sympathy starts from Big Sam.

Thing Bebe Needs a mention as the right back position looks ever more solid as he get more games under his belt.

As for Geremi, well what is Sam to do, his captain, if we are all honest is no were near top of the pecking order even more so now, Emre, Butt, Barton, Faye ahead of him in Midfield and well Duff, Zobs, Milner out wide, I can't see how Big Sam can play him. Geremi must have doubts with the Jan window approaching about his place in even on the bench.

Paul Patterson wrote...

Alex- Emre’s slight of touch and constant probing were a great alternative to Butt’s ‘Midfield Destroyer’ role, granted the more obvious MotM was probably Butt or Cacapa, but Emre was very industrious and took a few tackles.

I just don’t tend to go with the obvious, I remember a few dodgy Man of the Match awards earlier this season, when Owen got it after a poor game, just because the Prawn Sandwich sponsors in their comfy seats didn’t fancy talking to Cacapa afterwards. (Not that they’d get much English out of him anyway)

If we can keep him (Emre) fit and scoring certainly after his goal against Everton, then with Milner and N’Zogbia (Zoggy was a bit stodgy) can unlock defence’s.

Paul.

Martins has got to stay the No 1 Striker for me, he is hungry for it , makes goals out of next to nothing, Owen flatters to deceive and he dos'nt look a happy man at the best of times

In ,January we need to Sell Shola,Carr and the permantently injured left back ---cant remember his name its been that long since we seen him and buy Berbatov and a couple of full backs of Big Sams Choice as he is doing a pretty good job of finding good players up to now

i was at the match and i think that we deserved that win. our defence is amazing at the moment, cacapa and normaly Rozehnal in the centre back position, they are strong they both have good awarenes and both play well but the height of faye is also good, taylor is not geting on the bench at the moment because he is two young but has alot of talent. last season we all dreamed about a better defence and this season we have all got a early crimbo present lets just hope this will continue and maybe next season go for the carling cup aslong as we dont get arsenal again. and finaly i would pick martins over owen because he is fast, hungy and desperate for more goals so BIG SAM must play him and if it comes to it leae owen on the bench :P
