No screws loose for United ace Barton

Posted by Lee on October 3, 2007 1:59 PM |

Joey Barton So then Joey Barton has his recovering magic foot on the first rung of the ladder after getting through a 45 minute run out against Man City and the good news is he got through it unscathed.

Still playing with a screw in his foot Barton covered almost every blade of grass at Sport City and suggested he's got what it takes to give the Toon's season a shot in the arm.

Spurred on by his dad in the crowd at Sport City, Barton endured the boos from few pockets of the 500 that turned up but looked composed as found his feet again after shattering his foot at Brunton Park back in July.

But while City fans make out that they are glad to see the back of him, the good news for Newcastle United's loyal supporters is that they have a player capable of tearing open opposing defences and delivering that all important bite to the Toon midfield - which has been clearly lacking since day one of the season.

Barton's next test will be Wigan at Kingston Park next Monday when the North East media circus will turn up in their droves to witness the latest step of his comeback.

Next week Barton will be delighted to get through 75 minutes of action which will push him closer to making a first team return, possibly against Spurs in the next home Premiership game,

That may or may not happen but the approach from Barton is to make sure that when he's back in a black and white shirt, it will be back for the rest of a crucial campaign for the Magpies.

Not to be forgotten last night is the contribution of Emre who scored a fantastic free-kick and showed plenty of good touches to show just why he's nicknamed the Maradona of the Bosphorus.

Afterwards the player spoke of his desire to fight for his place and the mind can only boggle when you imagine Emre and Barton together.

This 4-3-3 system isn't too bad at home and can work well as proved against West Ham in the last home game and you can even argue that it worked against Wigan given the amount of chances created before Michael Owen's winner.

But away from home and even though United have dependable figures like Nicky Butt and Geremi protecting the back four, it appears to leave us open out wide and four of the last five conceded have came from wing play.

Getting back to last night and the other first teamers in Abdoulaye Faye and Jose 'The Bull' Enrique were also in fine form.

The Bull set up the equaliser for teenager Mark Doninger while Faye did well at centre-back.

Enrique seems to getting used to the lingo too with a young and mouthy Man City - all dressed in hoodies after the game - side testing his patience in a well contested reserve clash.

But at at time when United are desperate need of midfield magic both Barton and Emre look capable of providing it.

ARE WE PUTTING TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON BARTON TO SAVE OUR SEASON?

One player wont make a team
normally but in Bartons case he is capable of changing things and lifting the rest of his teammates
Get well soon Joey

We didn't play 4-3-3 against wigan or west ham.

Ryder's reply: Well your ProZone must be broken then Action Steve because although we started the games against Wigan and the Hammers with 4-4-2, we have reverted to 4-3-3.
Indeed Martins crossed for Owen to score the winner in this formation.

It's great news he managed to come through 45 minutes of the reserve game without any setbacks. I personally believe he will provide the attacking spark we'v been lacking in the engine room so far this term. Hope your comeback goes well without any setbacks and i look forward to seeing you in the black & white stripes in the near future !

One more midfielder is great to give us a creatice option, but will Sam Allardyce play him on the wing?

Please all we ask Sam, is N'Zobia on the left Milner on the right and two of three in the middle, Butt, Geremi or Barton.

Install Enrique in at Left back and that will (Hopefully) improve our defensive capabilities as well as free-ing up young Charles.

Paul.

Or maybe putting them on their backs if they step out of line.

Joey proved at Man City he's the sort of player that likes playing with a bit of expectation on his shoulders. I agree with Lee that at home, 4-3-3 with Barton AND Emre could be just what the doctor ordered.

lee i dont agree with you on the 442, 433,issue. in practice 442 is the more attacking formation and should be used at home. (in fact i would always use it home and away) 442 gives you 2 wide men and 2 in central midfield. as most goals in football come from balls crossed into the box (this is a statistical fact), it follows a team is more likely to score goals with 2 wide men, and is thus more attacking. the 433 system has 3 players in a more central role and as such suffers from lack of width (a problem for us this season). it is a system much more suited to defensive play, as it seeks to stifle the middle of the park.

I am rally looking forward to seeing Barton on the pitch, for me Zobs, Emre, Barton, Milner in midfield is what our front 2 and back for need. A defensive and attacking wall in the middle of the park. The abscence of these players has brought unfair comments on Smith who whislt filling positions not suited to him as work harder thatn most. Lets now judge him on his own position..up front.

Barton may well pickup a few cards during the season but that the bite we have been missing (If truth were told, can't remember anyone having a go at Stewart Pearce for getting stuck in.
