Toon fans head for the exits

Posted by Lee on November 3, 2007 4:18 PM |

Newcastle United were soundly beaten in their own back yard today by Portsmouth after the south coast side stormed into a 3-0 lead in just 11 minutes.

United's unbeaten home streak came to end in awful fashion as some fans headed for the exits long before the final whistle had sounded.

The 4-1 win for Pompey left Big Sam furious and leaves him with serious work to do on the training ground ahead of next week's derby trip to Sunderland.

Big Sam made four changes to the side that lost so badly at Reading with Steven Taylor in for Habib Beye at right-back and a reshuffle in midfield seeing skipper Geremi dropped to the bench.

Both James Milner and Charles N'Zogbia found themselves back in the starting XI and Nicky Butt started the game with the armband while Emre was also sub.

Alan Smith began up front with Michael Owen as Oba Martins also paid the price for the debacle in Berkshire seven days earlier.

And with Shay Given out with a groin injury it was down to Steve Harper to keep goal but his joy at selection quickly turned to agony as Pompey started the game like a house on fire as they searched for their first win on Tyneside since 1949.

Just eight minutes had elapsed when Noe Pamarot smashed home at Gallowgate to hit a long range screamer and open the scores and leave Harper helpless.

Then less than 60 seconds later it was 2-0 when Cacapa got in a mix up and the Premier League's top scorer took his tally to eight when he found the net to curl beyond the Easington-born stopper.

Amazingly it was 3-0 on 11 minutes when a long ball forward caught the defence napping and John Utaka who rounded the keeper and slotted home into the empty net.

With St James's Park fans furious United had to respond and they did when Charles N'Zogbia shot from range only for David James to save well, Owen fired it goalwards and it deflected off Sol Campbell to make it 3-1 and give Newcastle a lifeline.

Big Sam then hauled off Cacapa on 18 minutes in response to such a poor opening with David Rozehnal.

However, Nicky Butt's 40th minute yellow card means he will miss the derby at Sunderland next weekend.

Perhaps the biggest cheer of the afternoon came on 57 minutes when Martins entered the field for Enrique in a tactical switch as United searched for goals.

But United could not break through.

Owen did find an opening on 66 minutes but his former Liverpool team-mate David James held on well with an easy save low down.

Steven Taylor powered forward a minute later but Smith was unable to find the target with an effort on the turn from close range.

Big Sam's last throw of the dice came on 70 minutes when Emre replaced Milner who had worked his socks off to no avail.

But it was game over on 71 minutes when Joey Barton's foul on Sean Davis on the left hand side allowed Niko Kranjcar to smash home a free-kick from a difficult angle.

This was the cue for pockets of Toon support to head for the exits with many of them clearly in need of a stiff drink.

UNITED: Harper, S Taylor, Cacapa (Rozehnal 18), Faye, Enrique, Milner, Butt, Barton, N'Zogbia, Smith, Owen.

Subs: Martins, Forster, Geremi, Emre.

PORTSMOUTH: James, Johnson, Campbell, Distin, Pamarot, Kranjcar, Davis, Bouba Diop, Muntari, Benjani (Kanu 76), Utaka.
Subs: Lauren, M Taylor, Ashdown, Mendes

Crowd: 51,490

A knee jerk re-action would have many baying for the managers blood after this shambolic display.

I am no different, the only thing that has kept Allardyce’s head above water thus far, is the knowledge that home form will see us through.

Not being able to attend the game today, I watched from an alcohol privileged vantage point, as Newcastle United preceded to point rifle at foot and then shamelessly pull the trigger three times in the time it would take Olympic sprinters to get on their marks, get set and, well, go!

Cue public house to stand amazed as, a few stragglers arriving, check screens, agasp at the score in the top left hand corner of the screen, this being at 2-0 lads!

Various tobacco indulgent punters then left to their own devices used the exit’s to get their non-football fix, imagine the faces upon returning at the score of 3-0?

When Newcastle finally did manage to wake up and ‘bundle’ a goal over the line, barely a ripple of cheer was emitting from said pub, just a sigh and brief laughter coming from locals, now resigned to the fact that the home ‘record’ was to be dashed, and we hadn’t played 15 minutes.

The rest of the 90 minutes seemed an eternity and talking amongst the fans, now Wensleydaled off, the unanimous thought was, unless you want Iraq style hostilities Sam, get it right, and quick.

What a time for a Tyne/Wear derby eh?

Well, before the game started, I was on high expectation that we can win this game, even with a small goal margin, 1-0 let's say. But, with only less than 10 minutes we are 2-0 down which is very shocking one. The worst thing is that we cannot even scores the goal today. Same thing happened with last week game against reading.

Further more, all those goals came from the same defender mistakes, This could be interesting to read, what Sam would say about Cacapa...

When KK was manager he was excellent with his choice of substitutions if we were in trouble.More often than not he identified the problem and corrected it.
Sam Allardyce is like Frank Spencer-totally clueless.
In order to try to get goals he moved our most potent attacker to left back whilst at the same time taking off Enrique who had played very well. From that point onward we were nothing as an attacking force.Barton is still not up with the pace of the game but was kept on the pitch.
As I have said before Sam is tactically bankrupt and our coaching leaves a great deal to be desired.Am I the only person who thinks this?
I would remove him now!!!We are going nowhere.
Congratulations to Harry Redknapp- his team passed us off the pitch.
Harper 6,Taylor 7, Faye 7,Cacapa 2, Enrique 8,
N'Zogbia 9,Butt 7,Barton 5,Milner 7,Smith 6, Owen 7.Substitutes Rozenhal 8,Martins 6, Emre 5.

Big sam makes a rode for his own back sometimes with his team selection. Which manager in there right minds plays wingers on their weakest sides and wonders how we dont create chances . granted the defence played a big part today but goals win games even after defencive mistakes

hopeless, inept, shambolic just plain rubbish and yet again we talk about our defence
season after season its one step forward maybe two then time and again half a dozen back.ripped apart in ten minutes
reading derby man city and now portsmouth all games we would normally expect 3 points and really should be getting but no our back 4 decide to do their impression of the goon show and anyone who has read any of my prev posts know i normally wont have much said against us...sorry maybe tomorrow be back to normal but not today
the worrying thing is.this wasnt man u arsenal chelsea or liverpool if we defend like we did today against mediocre opposition what the hell potentially could rooney torres etc etc do.Are we gonna have to score 5 to grab a point
and no matter how bad cacapa was at 3-0 down the game is gone what is the point of taking him off he couldnt get worse but should have been allowed to show what his character is made of not thrown out of class by teacher SAM THE HORSE HAD ALREADY BOLTED MATE
So what a fantastic way to go into next week against the half wits on the back of 2 defeats and 2 worse performances and nothing less than 3 points will suffice we need to beat them and beat them well
at least the mackems wont be none the wiser after today with none of them able to read the post match reports our silver lining being no matter what we still got them to laugh at

Allardyce had his honeymoon in the first few games of the season but Newcastle have lost five of the last eight games ,one of which was in the Carling Cup against Arsenal's youth team.
For the best part, even when we have won, the performances have been relatively moderate.Allardyce is one of those who talks a good argument but cannot deliver. He's full of huff and puff but can't blow anything down.He is, alarmingly, tactically naive and is surrounded by coaches who cannot coach to the level required by a team with supposed aspirations to play in Europe.
However Allardyce is very quick to get his agent, Mark Curtis, working for Newcastle and being paid £500,000 for the pleasure of working on the FREE transfer of Geremi.I had hoped, obviously naively, that Mike Ashley and Chris Mort might to be at the forefront in using officers employed full time by Newcastle (such as Russell Cushing)to conduct the transfers thereby giving a lead in the cleaning up of the bung transfer culture.
Where is Ashley or Mort? Talk about Silence of the Lambs.Once more, without sounding too alarmist, to the slaughter.

Bobby Sanchez wrote...

Our best striker was on the bench and we had to put up with yet another inept performance for Smith. Clearly, dropping a player because he's poor doesn't apply to the golden boy. I'm reminded of all those poor games Jenas had under Robson and he stuck with him to absolutely no avail. Smith needs to find his level - and I suspect that means heading back to Leeds.

Milner on the left and Charlie on the right. Why? Charlie moved to left back when we bring on another striker. Why? He was the one player running at their defence. Now with only one wide player, we take him off to accommodate Emre, who, like Oba, should've been on at the start. Difficult to judge Barton, who, I suspect, isn't 100% (though if that's the case, why's he playing), but I thought he looked clumsy.

We came out for the second half and continued where we left off, playing with no verve. The tactics were poor - again; the substitutions were too late; the wrong players were taken off.

Ryder's reply: For legal reasons I had to take out your intro Bobby but you are right - it was a day when nothing went right for the Toon.

N'Zogbia on the right and Milner on the left. A half fit Barton in Midfield. When the changes were made he moved Zog to left back and brought on a striker and played him on the left wing, a place Zog should have been in all afternoon. On comes Emre in place of Milner !! Now we have a makeshift midfield and no wingers .... is this bloke for real or wot ??!!

ROB SMITH wrote...

Lee - did you check the content of your article before having it printed in the paper? The article mentions something about The Toon being in Europe?

Ryder's reply: That was before Pompey Rob, and it is Faye's opinion.

NEWCASTLE UNITED star Abdoulaye Faye has revealed he is loving life on Tyneside and wants to help the Magpies win back a place in European competition in his first season in a black-and- white shirt.

At 29, Faye knows that it won’t get much bigger than a packed house at St James’s Park and a tilt at the top four.

But after two exceptional perfor-mances alongside Cacapa at Gallowgate, a stint in the Champions League will suddenly be back on United’s radar if they can get their away form in order.

Faye helped Bolton qualify for the UEFA Cup under Sam Allardyce last term and was one of the catalysts who provided the Trotters with their journey to Germany to take on Bayern Munich next week.

And after missing out on such a big occasion, Faye feels that Euro nights could soon be back on the menu on Tyneside.

He told the Chronicle: “I have a lot of confidence at the moment because I feel like I am playing for a big club.

The football isn't flowing. We need to REBUILD with fast young players eager to make a name for themselves. We do have some good young players on the books. We have made some good signings, but have also paid over-the-odds for players whose best days are behind them. Our team is not harmonious - there not a good balance of styles. How long do we have to wait for Smith, Owen, and others to play a good TEAM game? It takes a big man to DROP THEM (especially if you signed one of them). On evidence so far, neither of the two has the skill to make a top team anymore. Owen is not doing us any favours by staying - he has been a massive flop so far. Blame Shepherd for that signing. But where was Smith ever supposed to fit in? Most people realized that Martins and Owen couldn't play together. Of the two, please keep Martins! The poor performances have been blamed on the defence, but we need skill upfront and in creativity right from the back. Please buy specific players to fit into a TEAM like Ferguson does. Alladyce's constant changes don't allow for building on the positives - he's wildly chopping and changing, blaming this and that. If there are parts of it right, don't tear it all apart. Some players seem to be talking a good game to get selected.

Who is the muppet who wrote "We're in Crisis" What a joke, so we lost 2 games on the bounce, your a fool mate. Things could be worse, we could be supporting Spurs.
We've got to give everyone a little bit of time, that includes the players, manager and the new board, to get things right. The saying goes "Rome wasn't built in a day"
Alex Ferguson has been in his job for 21 years, now thats stability. We lose 1, 2, 3 games and the manger must be sacked, but i can I remind people that we've already had some great mangagers in charge, who haven't done anything for us. Robson (won things all over europe), Daglish (won the title with blackburn), Souness (won heaps as player and manager)
Things have to be put into perspective, that this club was in melt down, thank god the new owner came at the right time, cos the're might not be an NUFC. We have proper people in charge behind the scenes now, a new manager who has brought in a load of new players, they need time to get to know each other, some learn English (casapa).
If we got rid of the manager now, who's going to come. Oh... then we're right back at square one, hoping the next guy at the helm can give us what we want, a cup or a title, but FANS, cos thats what we are, this will TIME, it's not an overnight thing. We have to keep backing everyone right down to the tea-lady, She's the only who hasn't been sacked yet.
Come January, hopefully we get more new faces, not bothered who, as long as they want to play for NUFC and die for NUFC, and when they have one bad game not put them up for slaughter.
Keep supporting and stop the booing.
NUFC for life!!!

Andy, I probably agree with you that crisis to probably the wrong word when it comes to the team, but perhaps not to the manager. It is starting to become appatent that all the worries about his technical/multi dimensional ability with a crop of fine young multi-dimensional players is coming to fruit unfortunatey. I thing rather that building a team that is used to each other he is confusing them and not using their natural talents in their best positions. He at times even looks scared to put out his strongest team. Surley Big Sam can see that he is already under the cosh for strangeling the team rather than cutting them loose. I think at the minute he looks at names and not current playing ability..point of note why is Martins of the pitch who has been fantastic this season when Owen who is on the pitch has done literally nothing for the last 3 games.

I am not going to start a head hunt but Big Sam needs to start looking over his shoulder as he is sadly a big part of the problem at the moment as he has all the pieces, but can't seem to do the jigsaw.
