Newcastle prove they can fight
YES - WE DREW!
On a night of high emotion Big Sam lived up to his masculine reputation by roaring his side to a great result against Arsenal.
It was a wasted night for the cameras who'd turned up to capture the pain of Toon fans and a wasted night for the national media circus too who'd turned up hoping for another managerial casualty on Tyneside - it was certainly a case of not tonight lads.
Instead they witnessed everything that's good about the Tyneside public and they set off back to London knowing what the Geordies are all about.
It wasn't the perfect night by any stretch of the imagination but given the circumstances, Newcastle United fans have to pleased with a point.
The black and whites previous two home encounters had resulted in two lacklustre displays on the hallowed St James's Park turf but this was different.
As stated the night wasn't perfect and Emmanuel Adebayor punished a sloppy Charles N'Zogbia clearance on just three minutes by blasting the ball beyond Shay Given to make it 1-0.
Many Toon fans could have then been forgiven if they muttered: "Here we go again" after the 3-0 and 4-1 scorelines previously against Liverpool and Pompey.
But instead the Geordie crowd were United in their will to get a result out of this one.
And after weathering the storm, United proved they could carve out chances and threaten the Gunners goal.
Indeed Geremi's free-kick and Steven Taylor's header that scraped the post in the first half.
Yet Arsenal went in ahead at the break.
However, with the Toon fans in great voice Newcastle came out for the second half with the whiff of a chance between their nostrils.
And unbeaten Arsenal unable to add to their tally Newcastle seized the opportunity.
Habib Beye's ball across the box from the right was flicked on by Alan Smith, dummied by Oba Martins, and the Senegalese star's fellow defender - who'd also ventured forward - lashed the ball off the upright and set off for the crowd to celebrate his equaliser.
It the type of goal Geordie fans love to see, a cross that caused havoc and three players putting pressure on the Gunners defence before Londoners back four was cracked up open.
Could United have gone on to win?
Well for certain at 1-1 there looked like only one team that was going to win but Arsenal as every member of the knowledgeable Tyneside crowd knew only too well the Gunners were capable of the sucker punch.
That didn't happen but as the corners - yes corners, remember them - seemed to flow one after the other Newcastle came within spitting distance of pulling off what would have been a shock victory.
In the end it was a point but a massive point for Big Sam and especially for the Toon Army.
The result buys Allardyce the time he wanted and victory against Birmingham, particularly if United play the more attacking 4-3-3 system, could well be a case of crisis, what crisis?
But then again this is Newcastle United.

« That's better - that's Taylor | Newcastle are dealt a Duff deal »

The atmosphere was 100 million times better, even after the early setback there was no booing, I'm amazed. Thats supporting your team, now keep it up for the rest of the season. Well played lads and Big Sam.
passion commitment and support not only from the players but from the fans owner and chairman if we produce performances like that every week then surely it is a step in the right direction .... the game was excellent to watch the level of football was committed and also excellent to watch we had chances we had corners (4 on the trot at one point putting arsenal under real pressure ) and we all will be feeling unlucky not to win it , like BS said we must go on to produce that against the brummies on saturday and a good performance and hopefully a win will set us up to take points from the next few games where it is more than realistic to expect us to get points there too if we play to the level we played at last night .... well done lads come on the toon !!!!!!!
if big sam plays his best players for each persiton we'll go far!!
What a differance a day(well,90 minutes)
makes.
The spirit, passion and downright committment of everybody inside SJP last night, was a reminder of what we can and should be about.
The abject displays (particularly against 'pool)recently made me want to spit and scream in frustration, but I held my head high after that.
Lets carry this on now, after repairing the outer walls last night, and rebuild the fortress that we should have.
That means everybody,including you.
ThereâÂÂs nothing you can do that canâÂÂt be done,
Nothing you can sing that isnâÂÂt sung,
Nothing you can say, but you can learn how to play the game-
ItâÂÂs Easy!!
Well if ever there was a need for a rousing performance, now was the time, a time for players to stand up, and be counted, and boy did they do that.
The usual grievance with Allardyce must come out though, NâÂÂZogbia was at fault for a goal against Blackburn and he was at fault for the goal last night, are we following Sam?
Maybe in some distant future, someone will right a book on the subject of players being played out of position, I would certainly fancy a read, especially when orthodox players are at managers disposals in the squad.
Still tonight was all about the performance and that was assured and collected, but this wasnâÂÂt the test, the test comes against Birmingham, Fulham, Wigan, etc, for if we donâÂÂt BEAT Birmingham on Saturday, this result will be inconsequential.
The crowd who have been âÂÂViciousâ (Apparently) over the last week certainly need praising on two countâÂÂs, one for giving unconditional loyalty and voice last night, but two, for actually being âÂÂViciousâ (Apparently) otherwise we certainly wouldnâÂÂt have seen the reaction against Blackburn and Arsenal would we? Pat on the back for supporters please.
We only say what we say and do what we do (And pay what we pay) because we care, one previous manager around these parts once remarked that âÂÂThe GeordieâÂÂs are quite unique in the way that they yearn for attractive entertaining footballâ I never understood the comment really, because every football fan wants to see a crisp, blitz of the oppositions half of the field.
I would take it as something of a slight on me as a player, if a side came into my home ground and played better football than my side, I would hope players would want to display this type of arrogance to the opposition, all the top sides do it and certainly Arsenal do it Home or away.
Newcastle fans have always had a desire to know what direction the club is going, over the last week or so they have verbally enquired about this indirectly, last night hopefully we got the answer.
All together now
All We Need Is Love.
Paul.
Close but no cigar, not a bad game to watch and it might be just me but Charley is no left back and it was painfull to watch his dodgy clearance lead to a quality goal by the Gunners. We have paid six million or so for Enrique and yet he does not get a game?? From what i have seen of him so far he is no Marcelino nor Pistone so get him off the bench before he loses interest.Getting back to the game a point is a point but i thought the game was there to be won , so if we have moved any further forward the boys need to prove it and take maximum points from the next four easily winnable games.I am still not convinced desperate dan is the man for the job but he got involved last night and screamed us on from the technical area. I am just hoping he spends old Ashleys dollars wisely in the comming window and buys us a bit of flair ...Carry on up the league Jackie W
p.s.
Alan Smith has looked like a square peg in a round hole under a succession of club and international managers, but he got my man of the match award for last nights performance.
i honestly believe if we had milner and charlie on the wings we would of won!!
the players put in the performance, they will get the credit like they got critcism in other games! I was disappointed that we didn't win
i still want big sam out, because of his tactics, formations, team selections but this has given him time and he must use it!
the acid test is birmingham as it's no point putting in this kind of performance then not build on it as we have seen this many times in the past!
the fan's backed the team as we saw the players trying their best, unike v portsmouth and liverpool
Well done lads.....over the not with that performance, just got to build on it, play like that week in week out we wont lose many, get Viduka fit we might score a couple to, But we are in need of some real flair deperately. some pace running with the ball is lacking. But a great perfomance, Smith and Milner worked as hard as ive ever seen in any game..Great engines they were superb
A lot better show by a team who looked hungry enough to win.Arsenal did not come across as an unbeaten side atop of the table.United did not let them play the way they have been and appeared not to relish the hard tackling of the magpies.A couple of errors by Steven Taylor can be forgiven by his honest aggressive game.A critic of Alan Smith lately, he proved me wrong by putting in a top effort(at centre forward)Hopefully we can march forward now.
Great performance, worthy point and within a whisker of making it 3! We must build on this result and destroy our opponents in the next four games - all below us in the league, two in the bottom three.
Two questions:
Why doesn't Enrique play more games - Zog is wasted at lb.
Why did so many fans leave before the end of the game?
Howay the Toon and let's give McLeish a proper welcome to the Premiership.
One of the good aspects of Sam Alladyc's Sport Science Program, is that with improved fitness, players can sustain pressure for 90 minutes. Very few teams can keep pressing Arsenal for 90 minutes, and when other teams have tired, Arsenal have scored at will. Newcastle not only stayed with Arsenal, but pressed for a winner. The constant harrassment of Arsenal' players almost completely threw them off their passing and moving game. Alan Smith got through a magnificent amount of running up front, and although he hasn't found his scoring touch yet, his team contribution was enormous. Oba Martins is beginning to fit into the team well, and is feared because of his explosive bursts - he will get better and better, especially when given a good run in the team (unfortunately, after the African Nations Cup). If Sam can provide some thrust down both flanks, we could have a hell of a team! I thought Sam was correct last night in bringing Viduka into the game late. The Aussie is strong and a box of tricks, but really needs to increase his mobility. Everyone in the club should be inspired to keep up the "Arsenal" effort, which reminded me of the magnificent bulldog spirit shown by Johny Wilkinson and co. last summer.

Alan played very,very well
Hugely improved performance and a fantastic atmosphere at SJP. Due credit to the players and staff, and every single Newcastle United supporter who bellowed their lungs out throughout the match.
That level of commitment from players should be there week in week out though, and it has been decidedly absent in too many matches this season. Despite all the criticism in the media we received, our response at the Liverpool match was fully justified, if not necessary, and may have taught any staff and players who were not already aware, just what Newcastle United is all about.
However, last nightâÂÂs performance and valuable point will count for very little if we donâÂÂt take the vital step in beating Brum and Derby at SJP. Losing to Derby, even though very early in our season, has become a national embarrassment. We MUST start consistently beating teams like Brum, Derby, and Wigan â home and away.
The improved performances at Blackburn and now against Arsenal give absolutely no weight to Zog being persistently played out of position. Surely against Brum and Derby, Allardyce can give Enrique (who he spent a big portion of his transfer budget on) more Premiership experience and allow the potentially electric Zog to play where he should. That would also allow Milner to play in his natural (and of course best) position. And as Wednesday again proved, if Smith is on the field at all, he should be upfront - not in midfield. LetâÂÂs hope this occurs at the weekend.
Performances like Wednesday CAN significantly alter the trajectory of a season, BUT far from always do. 2 points from 18 remains miserable form, and letâÂÂs embrace caution and see how we go in these next run of games. We absolutely should not get carried away like a significant number of supporters did after the Tottenham win (letâÂÂs not repeat Newcastle and good defence blogs just yet aye). If we take 7 plus points from our next 12, we can begin to look to the New Year with some degree of optimism.

I like the look of Smith and Martins up front and I feel BS should stick with them. It's amazing the difference Smith makes to the team when he plays up front. Sam should learn from this and play zog in his propper position as he makes too many mistakes as a left back.
Barton and Butt make a terrific midfield and I'd love to see Milner and zog out on the wings. When Faye is back I think he and taylor will give us a really solid defensive pairing and beye is begining to look a quality signing.
Well done Sam. I said on this blog before the Arsenal game that Sam was the man for this job. I think it's obvious some of the players have been kicking back at the commitment, work rate and fitness levels Sam has demanded of them. Crucially, with the support Mort and Ashley have given, I think we're beginning to see evidence that Sam is winning the battle inside SJP. If we are ever to be successful, this has to be the outcome over the longer term.
Great stuff well said
