A late Carroll service for Big Sam and Newcastle

UNITED GUNNED DOWN IN SECOND STRING DERBY BUT BIG ANDY IS BACK IN TOON

Sam Allardyce hasn't had the best of festive periods but the hope that things will get better could coincide with the return of teenage striker Andy Carroll.

Carroll was back in a black and white shirt tonight at Kingston Park but could not prevent a 3-1 defeat against Sunderland.

However, he did show some great touches and underlined just why United rate him so highly.

To hand the 19-year-old any kind of Save our Season mission would be terribly unfair on the Geordie striker - but United coaches have known for a long time they have a real talent on their hands in young Carroll and right now he's got a great chance of getting a few games under his belt to show what he can do.

With Oba Martins away on international duty and Shola Ameobi seemingly out of favour Michael Owen and Mark Viduka are the Toon's top two but even the experienced duo are having a bad time at the moment.

The fact that Carroll - who almost snatched the Stoke game with a good chance on Sunday - is so young might just help his cause at the moment, the kid doesn't really know what fear is yet.

And judging by some of his performances last season for the reserves the lad knows where the net is as well.

The big striker is great in the air and not too bad with his feet.

Oh and by the way he beat one of the world's best goalies in Gianluigi Buffon to score his first ever goal for United against Juve in a pre-season friendly in the same game the Italian World Cup winner tried to take his head off in a heavy challenge.

Carroll got up from that and he was around to hear Buffon pay him a glowing tribute after the game.

But now with the player keen to stay with Newcastle after a disappointing but learning curve loan spell at Preston done and dusted, he could just give Sam Allardyce something different to work with.

Oh, and he couldn't get his game for a struggling Preston side.

It’s official!! We have drifted to the horrible, low expectation, monotonous, selling club mantra of the pre-Keegan days.

Reading in the Journal today, Emre is the picture of the latest player with a possible move in his future and he is I’m sure you will all agree, a real, creative gem in our side, certainly meriting a place in the side ahead of Geremi, Smith or Barton, all of which are Allardyce’s buys may I point out.

It’s now obvious to me that Allardyce wants to strangle the life out of this side, in the process of trying to strangle the life out of the opposition,- We know which one he’s achieving at present don’t we?

The old idea of ‘Spoilers’ in the side harks back to the Souness at Liverpool, Bremner at Leeds days which lets be fair, whilst they were twice the footballers of Smith, Barton and Geremi, they were of a particular time when you could easily smash through another midfielder and if you win the ball, that’s a bonus- this won’t wash these days, the principle is archaic and it simply doesn’t work short or long term.

Allardyce is simply the right manager at the wrong time, a time that calls for ’Carpet football’ (Copyright Sir Bobby Robson 2008) take a peek at Arsenal, Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Portsmouth and to a lesser extent Chelsea, they all play with an authority, arrogance and stylish optimism about their play- which in turn gives them a head start before the opposition have even got off the bus.

The funniest thing I’ve read this season from Alary (And there has been a lot) was before Arsenal away in the League cup, where he re-iterated his record against Arsenal at Bolton- ‘I have the secret to beat Arsenal’ he said proudly, well did you unlock that secret and tell the players, because we still got beat. I don’t think Arsene Wenger has to change his underpants before he plays an Allardyce side, Bolton had a record better than most against Arsenal, but Arsenal have still won games (And titles) and are consistently beating Allardyce sides. -Good football will always triumph over ‘Percentage football’

Also, we have a healthy batch of youngsters, that seem to have little appetite for the game, or the won’t have once they grasp Allardyce’s way of playing the game. The three players who had the most spark against Stoke were, Steven Taylor, Kezenga Lua-Lua and Andy Carroll, two of which haven’t had much experience of Allardyce’s ‘spoiling’ brand, the other we are in dispute with over a contract- Great going Sam!

The predicament these youngster find themselves in reminds me of those days in the eighties, when talent was abundant- Gazza, Waddle etc, but they were sold, either to fund a stand or to get more experience involved- The stand is now in place, but the young creativity is once more being stifled.

Non of us a particularly happy with the standard of football on display currently, this will not get better unless, Allardyce changes his philosophy completely- something which he seems completely against due to stubbornness or we need a new manager- Mike Ashley should think about this very carefully.

I do agree with you Paul 100%.I am very upset to hear him say Oba is not for sale becuase eventhough I love Newcastle would love to have Oba stay long term he does not fit in the style of play of big SAM, it is obstuletely not fair to destroy a srtiker like Oba by sitting him on the bench and playing him as winger.

It seems to me Ashley and Mort have made a descion to keep SAM, so let players like Oba and Emre who will never fit into this system go and buy players that would.

Wow we are seriously moving backwards as a team instead of moving forward into the new era pf playing technical, attacking football with flair and arrogance.

God show us mercy and have SAM wake up one day to realize he needs to change his approach completely, as it takes a big person to admit they are wrong and change. If he does he will get 100% support from the players and fans.
