KK has to settle for a point!

Posted by Lee on January 19, 2008 6:57 PM |

NEWCASTLE UNITED had to settle for a point tonight as Kevin Keegan made an emotional return to the dugout at St James's Park.

Keegan recalled Shola Ameobi to the starting line-up for the first time since the Carling Cup tie since Arsenal last September.

Ameobi replaced Mark Viduka (calf) while David Rozehnal was also back in the team with Emre suspended.

Meanwhile Michael Owen captained United in the absence of Geremi and Nicky Butt, who missed out due to suspension along with Alan Smith.

The Messiah made his entry to a packed St James’s Park amidst a white hot atmosphere with the clash with Bolton a sell out.

Bolton actually dominated the first 20 minutes of the game and forced three corners but poor finishing in the final third let them down.

And every time United went forward the home crowd roared on the black and whites with Keegan also urging his side forward from the touchline.

With 25 minutes on the clock Owen forced a corner but N’Zogbia’s flag kick was cleared and Enrique’s long range effort went wide.

Two minutes later a Steinsson foul on Owen earned United a free-kick and N’Zogbia’s set-piece found the head of Taylor but his header was deflected wide.

Yet despite the anticipation of a goal laden first half the teams went in at the break.

In the second half United poured forward on the five minute mark when N’Zogbia’s cross found Carr but the right-back blazed it over the bar.

Just before the hour Newcastle won a free-kick 30 yards from goal but N’Zogbia curled it over the bar.

On 64 minutes a Milner cross fell to Rozehnal just in front of goal but the Czech headed over from eight yards.

Then on the next attack a Milner cross cum shot had to be clawed to safety by Jaaskelainen with United starting to turn the screw.

Bolton tried to sustain the pressure when they hauled off Kevin Nolan and replaced him with Ivan Campo.

Wanderers escaped a late penalty scare when an N’Zogbia cross appeared to catch Kevin Davies on the hand but ref Wiley waved away protests.

UNITED: Given, Carr, Enrique, Cacapa, Taylor, Milner, Rozehnal, N’Zogbia, Duff (LuaLua 80), Ameobi, Owen.

Subs: Carroll, Harper, Troisi, Edgar.

BOLTON: Jaaskelainen, Nolan (Campo 67), Gardner, Davies, Steinsson, Guthrie, McCann (Cohen 76), J O’Brien, Michalik, A O’Brien, M Taylor (Samuel 79).

Subs: Habsi, Stelios.

Ref: Alan Wiley.

Crowd: 52,250

Well, I did not get to see the game but based on the feedback it is definetely not what a team managed by KK would deliver, but he did not build this team. I seriously believe he needs to get one creative midfielder and one powerfull strong tall striker in the mould of Torres and Bebaratov(Shola not good enough and Viduka too slow, out of shape more of a bench palyer). To expect immediate results was hope and a bit unreaslistic, eventhogh winning against a Bolton team without Anelka and Difou should have not have been a big task as we already beat them with thier full squad. Not having Emre(needs to be sold) and Butts did diminish our chances of wining.

not a fairy tale ending for k.k.the lads tried hard but did not seem capable of taking control in the midfield.shola tried hard in his first game in top flight this season but not many balls reached either him or owen.at least a clean sheet was kept and the enthusiasm was their.kk will now know of the tremendous task he has to turn around this team...good luck

Well the performance was better, there was a bit more spark and excitement from the players and the fans, and the game wasn't quite as drab as the match reports would suggest. However, even with the shackles off it still shows that we don't have anyone who can cross a ball.
So we just need a right winger, a creative midfielder and a Berbatov to play alongside Owen and we should be sorted.

No doubt the Southern press will have a field day. Before you do, KK's only been here 2 days; don't bother to crucify him already. It is quite difficult to break down a nine man defence. The original entertainers would have found that hard to do.

GREAT ATMOSPHERE,game wasnt up to much, but,to be fair,i think fergie wouldnt av done better with that team.KK has inherited some duckeggs not to mention that there were 8 possible first teamers out.We should av broken down a team that clearly came for a point(and got it!).A couple of points tho, tell me if i am wrong, the ref had a shocker, bolton had dirty/ungentlemanly tactics, and ROZEHNAL AND AMEOBI wouldnt get a game for my bairns school team! However we know its a learning curve for kev with the players but i bet he knows what he needs already!......driving back listening to 5 live sport results/phone-in,the amount of supporters from random teams laughin and makin jokes that the bubble has burst/sack keegan already, with the mush hosting it egging them on was unfair....wot we done to them? and why do they care to make the comments? i cudnt give a monkeys for west brom/man u etc........US AGAINST THE WORLD BOYS,A-LA BUTCH AND SUNDANCE.....THEYLL NEVER BREAK US.....

Say what u will but this was better. I am a pessimist but I liked what i saw tonight. Players fighting for every ball. Pouring forward. r
Relentless pressure in the second half. Even stephen carr looked ok. At the end of the day this wasnt kev's team so i think he did the best with what was available.
Probably the best result ... no doom and gloom and no one getting ideas above their station.
Like the way he deployed Rozenhal in an attacking midfielder role .. maybe he has found his niche ... watch out gerrard

The first months of Kevin Keegan's reign amount to little more than STOCK TAKING. KK has an excellent eye for a player, and will look for individuals whom he can mould into the team for a specific role. The Boss has a tough job sorting out who is really up for the ride, and who is just picking up a pay cheque. It will take several top class players to lift the team, and KK will show some current players the door. I think after the marvellous 10 man performance against Stoke, some players were tired, but we also have a dull cutting edge.

Quite a good game, considering he used up players that he didnt buy. I mean, he needs his players, not what others buy for him. Overall, bolton was only lucky to escape more than 2 penalties and if one goes in, it will be high tide for bolton as they came for a point.

The game wasnt too good, but we cant all expect good game from a manager who has only been here for two days, i mean, MU needs time too, certainly nobody expect Keegan to get the game immediately. But a word to him, get a striker, one that can score because we obviously lack of a scorer. Michael Owen for me is good but really we need a striker. How does Defoe sound to you?

i have to disagree, Steve. i thought Shola and Rozenhal were 2 of our most impressive players tonight. i would like to see Shola get more opportunities as i think he would be even better when up to pace. i'm much more comfortable with Rozenhal at defensive mid than at centre-half. and i think he brings more to the position than Butt or Smith at this point.

What todays game shows as much as any thing is that Newcastle have little or no tactical nouse, either on or off the field. Whatever other qualities Keegans new number two has, a shrewd tactical brain is a must. King Kev has always been a great motivator with a great plan A but if plan A doesn't work he never has a viable plan B. Today we had three players down the left side of the pitch who refuse to kick the ball with their right foot,ie Duff, Nzogbia and Enrique. Bolton sussed this and just stopped them going on the outside so these players could only then play the ball sideways or backwards. The wingers should have swopped sides every now and then so that Duff, for example, could at least cross the ball into the box when he cut inside, something he cant do when he is on the left. Keegan has, also, never quite got the hang of using his substitutes properly,(lack of tactical awareness). Duff should have been substituted much earlier.Nzogbia had an excellent game against a poor championship side on Wednesday but will never make it as a top quality midfielder because of his insistence on not using his right foot and because he has a tendency to overhit his passes, crosses or shots at vital times. He runs with his head down and he doesn't do deft or delicate. He can get away with this as an attacking full back and if he could be coached in the defensive skills he could be an international class fullback but he will never be a consistantly good enough midfielder at the top level.

What we saw tonight was a good idea of things to come. I was very pleased with the way Rozenthal was deployed. He seems very comfortable in the holding midfielder position. If I recall correctly, he played in that position during his time at PSG. I think Keegan has found something in Rozenthal that Sam totally overlooked.

I really think we need a bit more creativity in midfield, but as others have said, a lot of our first team was out.

Kazenga LuaLua was also very impressive today. I think that Keegan has a very good batch of youngsters to work with in LuaLua, Troisi, Carroll, Milner, N'Zogbia, Taylor and the recently acquired Tozer.

I for one am totally confident in our current squad. I think we could use another midfielder and maybe another striking option, but I think that KK has a lot of experience and depth to work with.

Hopefully he can eradicate the remnants of Big Sam and motivate the natural talent that each of our players have. There's a lot of talent in our squad.

I for one see Geremi becoming a very pivotal player under Keegan. I don't think Sam, or us as fans, gave him a chance.

And for goodness sakes, get rid of Barton. He's a lost cause and the last problem that remains from the Sam Allardyce era.

I find this whole thing incredible, the man has been in the job for two days and already miracles are expected. Lets just put this into perspective, earlier this season Bolton BEAT Manchester United, we have currently taken four points off them.
Get off the mans back and let him do his job.

I watched the game on telly and loved it. I thought Bolton played the kind of destructive football they seem so good at and were determined to spoil our party, and they very nearly did.

I think a point was a result for us as it was always going to be a challenge for the players to shift from “do as I say to “express yourself, especially as they don’t yet have a clue how to do this as a team.

The signs are promising. Rozi showed that he is a useful attack minded defender and saw the passes the needed to be made (more practice will see them going where he wants them to go). He looks very much a Keegan player. It was also good to see Shola in the thick of things again

Carr clearly demonstrated why he should be our first bit of business before the transfer market closes. Rubbish!

There is an issue of concern with Kevin though, but I am hoping it will not be a problem. The premiership is a different place than what it used to be in many ways, but most significantly in the players making up many squads these days, including Newcastle. I am talking about the dramatic increase in the number of African players playing Premiership football.

In the old days (I am talking ten years ago), we had only one or two foreign players in a squad, usually a European (Albert, Pav, Ginola…) and possibly a South American (Tino, Mirandinia, Nolberto…). Kevin showed he could manage these players and bring out their best. But how many African players has he managed? Wenger and Morinho have shown they understand and can manage the enthusiasm, sensitivity and explosivity of many of the African players. Wenger holidays in West Africa and Morinho does a lot of charity work there.

Nigel useless Pearson clearly demonstrated he hasn’t a clue how to get the best from the African players (witness the debacle at the end of last season). I think Kevin has yet to show that he can. Our success this season will, to some extent, depend on how he manages Obafami and co. I am confident that he can, because he has got an emotional and enthusiastic personality that all players, and especially African players, respond to.

He could do worse than follow the exciting Cup of Nations that kicks off today!

Yeah, it was better. We would have lost this under FSA. Bolton came to spoil and are possibly the worst team I've seen at SJP - with the notable exception of us under FSA, of course. The central midfield is a huge problem and has been for some time. They don't always take conntrol or provide cover and, in the past, leave the defence open. I don;t know if we've got anyone to do that. I haven't been comfortable with Butt's performances of late and I'm hoping Barton'll go before he can disgrace us again. Smith isn't really a premiership player - he tries, but the sense just isn't there. Charlie looks good, but I'd rather have him wide instead of Duff who often looks leaden. If Emre was focussed, he could be the one, but while he's far more skilful, he, like Smith, confuses passion with stupid agression.

I watched the game on TV and what I saw was a clear and visible positive start on the new road KK is paving out for the team.
Give him time and the results will come, what he doesn´t need now is criticism for a squad of players he didn´t pick himself.

I could only listen to the match on BBC5 yesterday but it sounded so much better than the stuff that has gone before this season. I cant quantify it, it just sounded more positive despite the constant negativity from the commentary team (especially Chris Waddle of all people). Although we created few clear chances it seemed as if the majority of the game was played in the Bolton half at least. They were happy to defend the point in the second half because they knew we would be going for the win. Perhaps they would have pushed on against an Allardyce team and nicked the 3 points. Patience and hope my black and white friends!!

Newcastle won nils each !!! Our football from the back, and on the floor is much better to watch than big sham's.....and we had 80% of the play 3 days after a 10 man battle against stoke. no wonder they looked knackered. We '' looked '' like a football team whereas Boldon colliery ? made no attempt.........shame on them. They came to kill the game when they might have won, if they'd played like they did against Man.U. Keegan has his work cut out until he can create his own team which for me, should involve Berbatov whatever the price. He is known to be wanting a new challenge, and immortality at St. James' might just appeal to this genius, plus the man I screamed for when Shearer was in his last season....Robbie Keane. Owen might rise like a pheonix with a few better players in the squad but Robbie would hit the ground running if we got him up here. On yesterday's good effort by the lads after wednesday's great result, I feel quite pleased with our prospects under Kev, even if we do nowt this season.

KK has inherited a pedestrian team, and the Bolton game proved that. NU looked good in spurts, but that doesn't win titles or even deserve the top half of the PL. They need a solid striker or two. "Captain" Owen failed at both his roles, unable to even bother Bolton's defence or to rally his flagging team. He is past his best on the field and KK should recognize that and get another striker asap. Suggestion: sell Owen, Viduka, Duff, Butt for whatever you can get and go into the transfer market quickly. Try N'Zogbia at striker for now. At least he would bring hustle, and bother any defense. The team needs someone up front who won't fall down every time the ball comes near. As for captain, be realistic. Even Given would be more effective than Owen. Bolton is ordinary at best. But Newcastle couldn't cope. Roll up your sleeves, KK.

I was pleased to see the comments on this post as I think they are fairer than more of the press. I watch the game on tele and the game play has much improved. OK, we haven't had one shot at target, but we have control the possession and have a moment few moments of pentrating move. We have also play the ball on the ground rather than pumping it up the air. It is a relief as we are finally playing a game of football, not headball. I take it quite positive from this game. And I'm confident that Keegan will do a great job for Newcastle.
