KK's return means we can dream again

Posted by Lee on January 18, 2008 8:26 AM |

The last couple of days all seems like some kind of crazy dream but as each hour passes the reality is that Kevin Keegan is back on Tyneside and the city is buzzing once again.

And you just can't help thinking about the good times.

You know what I mean stuff like Rob Lee's hat-trick of headers, Grimsby away, Howay 5-0, Albert's chip, Tino Asprilla, KK saying: "I would love it", Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand, Pedro - the list is endless.

Outside of Newcastle people think it's a joke, from one Soccer Circus to another seems to be general cocensus.

But any Geordie is thinking differently - KK is older and wiser and while many doubt his passion for the game isn't what it used to be his love for Newcastle United Football Club has never died - Keegan has always held a torch for the Toon.

Last time around Keegan created a monster with United and it turned into a monster that even the players couldn't control.

After building up a 12 point lead a lack of experience going into the final straight meant that United were just short of the task in hand and couldn't finish the job.

It's a massive ask for KK to get us back to that level so quickly but don't forget in just four years he dragged us from the bottom of Division Two to the top of the Premier League.

This time he jumps on board with United 11th in the Premier League and with a decent squad at his disposal.

Critics will say that KK's methods are past their sell by date.

But we already know that Keegan was straight back on the training pitch with his new squad and he soon had them smiling again.

None of them were worrying about making runs that might be tracked by ProZone or how many crosses or shots they'd made.

It's believed that Keegan will go back to basics with United and no matter what people say about the modern game, the rules haven't changed - it is still a simple game.

Why can't you go out with an attacking game plan?

Why can't the players play the game with a smile on their faces?

Why shouldn't the Geordie public be entertained?

At the end of the day, it may have been painful at the time to lose the title in 1996 but it certainly beats getting murdered at home to Portsmouth and being 3-0 down before some people have even sat down.

Bolton at home tomorrow will give us the first idea of how we are going to play in the new KK era.

But I think most of us already have an inkling of how that might be.

It's interesting that Bolton have reverted to Big Sam's tactics of the long ball/pass approach.

And tomorrow we'll see exactly what happens when you try to counter it with a display of swashbuckling football.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Im sick of reading from the southern press, what a mistake it was blah, blah, blah etc. If they took time and came and seen what influence Keegan has on the team, the fans and the city, maybe they would know better. At least we wont be served up with the dross that Fat Sam said was Football. Players will be playing with more pride and in their correct positions, to me that was part of Sam's downfall. Just look at N,Zogbia since moving back into CM he has been amazing, anybody thinking he was a left back need there marbles counted.

I love Kevin Keegan's football philosophy. He has his own style and flair. I'm sure in the future, Alan Shearer will have his day - he is a young man. It may be better not to have "too many cooks" right now - let Keegan do his thing unfettered. His views may be different to Alan's. They are both loved on Tyneside, but tandom's rarely work. There should be no pressure on King Kev. If he wants to be independent, who can blame him? It should not be presented as a rebuff to Alan, just a desire to do his own thing without constantly having to explain himself. It could be that Alan would be "too powerful" to be a number 2, and would he really be happy with that? Alan will be a good manager in the future - he's got nearly 20 years on the King.

It all starts again tomorrow & what an irony we come up against Bolton & their brand of "football" invented by a certain Big Sam!! It's a case of Beauty v the Beast & I for one think the right team will get the correct result. Last time round it was 3-0 in the Kings first game so the old romantic in me is going to go for the same again with Mr Owen getting the lot!!!

People say Keegan is tactically inept. But that is something that i just cant seem to understand. How did he take us from the bottom of the second division to within wiskers of the premier league. Have a look at what he did at Fulham and Manchester City, gained them promotions to the premiership in just his first season in charge. How did he achieve these with his inept tactics? He makes the players believe in their ability and gets the best out of them. KK takes his team into a match looking to win, not fearing the opposition and trying to contain them. I do believe thats how football got to be played.

What annoys me about the national media is how uniformd they are - one of the 'experts' on Radio 5 said over Christmas that we 'lost every other week' under KK! I wonder whether they think Arsenal would have been better off having stability and 'giving Bruce Rioch time' or sacking him so they could appoint Wenger?

i dont get the press? what is the problem with geordie fans being happy they have a hero back

ill admit i thought sam would be the man but he played worse football than dalglish and gullit! hell, is it wrong for fans paying god knows hoe much money these days to expect to be entertained??!?!
Keegan is right...he is the only man we have had who has understood what we want...there is one word in all this that springs to mind and that is "destiny", corny i know but who cares, messiah's dont return home on a regular basis!!!

Lee, I'm sure you'll agree that this afternoon saw a very good and interesting press conference by KK.

Did anyone else pick up on the hint when he was asked about reported interest in Defoe, Brown (Man U), Brown (Celtic) & Bridge? He said that we were a club capable of signing the biggest and best players around. To me that suggested that they have their sights set on bigger names than those mentioned, although I think Bridge would be a decent and economical signing.

I must say I wouldn't be at all excited by Defoe, and I would be surprised if either the club or Defoe himself would make this move.

I can't wait to see if the reports of the Ashley war chest turn out to be true and if they really do have some bombshells in the pipeline.

Exciting times ahead! Finally!

King Kev is tactically spot on. Plus spot on in many other ways! If attack eventually leads to 2 wins one loss out of 3 games = 6 points, while 1 win 2 draws only = 5 points. Plus he's much more aware that the audience matters. Hell, there would be no professional game without the audience. I can never understand the Souness and Alladyce "fear" system - make the enemy worry! He will need time to sort out the sqad and add to do it his way, but with the support, patience, and trust of the fans, he'll do it.

YOURE right Lee,it is like some crazy dream, and then you wake up and its for REAL! I am totally elated to have KK back, watching that press conference just made it even better,he just has an aura and charisma that you know WILL galvanise and inspire the team,WILL lure top signings,WILL challenge manu and arsenal. The buzz hes created is just growing all the time and i just cannot wait to get in SJP today and savour it all.On the subject of signings i wouldnt be too keen on defoe or any mentioned at the press conference and i think keegan will have his own players in mind, van buyten who i like,is being mentioned, even on sky.We do need a playmaker and i think KK will recognise this unlike allardyce.I just know the club is in good hands now so ive got no need worry about what rubbish we might waste millions on.The negativity still wont go away though will it,certain media critics who say you should never go back should say that to pedro beardsley who came back to the toon from everton and played the BEST football of his career.Gullit of all people said KK wont do it and big stars wont come.....this is the same clown who didnt give rob lee a squad number and took on the mackems with shearer and ferguson on the BENCH!he must av headed one too many balls or maybe all those years of dreadlocks have took their toll on the old grey cells.Keiran richardson has rubbished the return of KK although this should be treated with the contempt it deserves. They even say football has changed SO MUCH in 11 years that KK may not be relevant anymore,CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW ITS CHANGED COS I CANT SEE IT? GOOD FOOTBALL IS GOOD FOOTBALL.Just to finish my rant,my pet hate is oliver holt, smarmy mirror rep who takes pleasure in slagging us off almost weekly, has now said that KKs return has got his thumbs-up.......like we really need your approval....

Are there any sensible football knowledgable Newcastle fans out there that have reservations about this appointment? I am a man city season ticket holder , I would be slightly worried.

Ryder's reply: Bet you weren't complaining when you scored over 100 goals that season as he took you back to the Premier League.

I hope KK goes easy on the pampering of certain players. Making Owen captain seems to be just that. Owen has been pouting for months and his play and fagility have reflected that. Surely a true professional would have played hard and tough during difficult times. Owen is in the twilight of his career and can no longer perform as he used to. His physical and emotional toughness is questionable and making someone like that skipper is not a positive move. It may be popular with some, but it is not the best for the team's future. KK needs to face reality, make tough and sometimes unpopular decisions in the best interest of NUFC. But good luck KK.

When do football supporters bother themselves with someone else's club? Only when it's Newcastle, apparently. The fact that they get so worked up belies their repeated claim that NUFC is not a big club. Which other club would get that kind of attention? And who cares, anyway, what they say? We've got Keegan, that's what matters and he will deliver fantastic entertainment. Personally I would rather watch a Keegan team win nothing than an Allardyce team win a cup. Trophies aren't everything. We're going to have a great time, whatever we do or don't win. And you can't set out to win trophies - all you can do is just play great football with passion and trophies will (or won't) be a by-product.
