Special start for Special K

NEWCASTLE UNITED fans celebrated the return of Kevin Keegan in style tonight after Stoke City were rolled over in the FA Cup.

The Messiah lifted the gloom instantly on Tyneside as United dished out a real hiding.

The win means they will now face Arsenal at the Emirates at the end of the month but with KK now back in the helm the Magpies will feel anything is possible.

The game began amidst a crackling atmosphere with many fans snapping up tickets late in the day on the news that Keegan was back in Toon.

United caretaker boss Nigel Pearson was without United’s four African internationals and suspended Nicky Butt and Alan Smith.

The crowd were pumped up as the game unfolded as KK mania swept across the stands.

And United’s first goal of the new era arrived from Michael Owen who converted from close range after Damien Duff’s left wing cross was nodded down by James Milner and into the former Liverpool man’s path.

With 18 minutes played the crowd were distracted from the game as Keegan took his seat in the Milburn Stand flanked by both Chris Mort and Mike Ashley.

Inevitably the Toon Army were on their feet as the applause and cheers boomed round St James’s.

But in keeping with the madness of the day controversy followed the Toon Army’s joy.

Indeed on the half hour mark a nasty challenge by Turkish ace Emre sent Stoke skipper John Eustace flying and Rennie – who sent off Alan Shearer in 1999 - wasted no time in showing him a straight red card.

Yet Stoke failed to take advantage of the extra man and two minutes later Newcastle doubled their lead.

N’Zogbia’s corner was swirled in to the near post and Cacapa rose high to head the ball down and beyond Steve Simonsen.

Keegan mania had a chance to die down for 15 minutes during the break but the home crowd were once again in great voice in the second period.

However, the reality on the field of play was that 10 man Newcastle still had to battle through another half with little cover on the bench.

Newcastle though still kept pressing and with Stoke on the back foot United looked to add to their two goal cushion under the watchful eye of KK.

And the Magpies seemed intent on serving up a repeat dose of the good old days when The Entertainers attacked at every opportunity.

With 67 minutes on the clock the return of attacking football was confirmed when a dazzling run by James Milner was followed by a thumping finish by the Yorkshireman.

It was 4-0 with 14 minutes left after United hit Stoke on the break.

Milner found N’Zogbia who rolled it across the centre circle to Duff who kept his cool and finished crisply as the game turned into a rout for Newcastle.

OK, Liam Lawrence did score at the end - but who cares?

UNITED: Given, Carr, Enrique, Taylor, Cacapa (Rozehnal 71), Milner, N’Zogbia (LuaLua 79), Emre, Duff, Owen, Viduka (Carroll 73)
Subs Harper, Edgar.
Crowd: 35,108
Ref: Uriah Rennie (Sheffield)

I said last week, when defending my fellow Newcastle fans, we are not a greedy lot, we don’t constantly bang on about trophies (Or lack of ‘em) we simply LOVE our football.

I have also said that we have a good squad that under previous regime’s, was completely wasted, with some players that we LOVE and some we actually find it baffling they were even signed in the first place.

With Kevin Keegan, we have a Newcastle fan, a man who we LOVE and a man who we actually respect the thoughts of, unlike previous incumbents of the hotseat- What chance has the club had, when we the fans have raised question (En Mass) about some appointments in the past?

We Newcastle folk are a crazy breed, not expecting a trophy, (It would be great though) but it’s the style of football we LOVE, not ’Percentage Football’ just football is what we want to watch.

What we have been watching in the last three years, certainly the last eight months has NOT been football, certainly not the kind of football were going to LOVE.

I’ve been imagining players Keegan might want to sign, players that are in his own image, player he’d LOVE to have playing around him, if he were still on the park.

Then I thought- Well, isn’t Emre a Keegan type of player? Isn’t Milner? Isn’t N’Zogbia? Maybe even Enrique? Emre could be a Beardsley, N’Zogbia- Ginola, Milner- Gillespie, Enrique- Beresford, the players are remarkably similar, they are there, already in place.

I also stated in December, that IF we were to get Keegan in, not for a minute believing it would happen, but if we did, I’d be confident of a European finish- time has moved on and the table is a bit stretched now.

But hey, this is Newcastle United- The club we all LOVE. Enjoy it.!

Paul.

I was at work tonight till nine o'clock,so I heard about KK's arrival,
with,I must admit,mixed emotions(you know the ones-"THE entertainers",a fantastic feelgood factor for four years,a feeling that we were almost guaranteed European football every year;
then comes the walk-out,and some dodgy decisions before that,ie Andy Cole being allowed to go etc),whilst I was listening to the radio.
Time alone will tell if this appointment by Mike Ashley has been inspired,or merely the fact of a knee jerk reaction brought about by him being in amongst the fans too much and listening to too many emotional outpourings.
I certainly hope it's the former, cos by God we're needing some inspiration right now.
Tonight was a good result,in as much we showed a championship side that the divide between them and us was a fair bit more than they could handle, and if that result was brought about by the return of "WOR KEV"then I'm all for him being there.
I have got some misgivings about his return, but if the ship is steadied and we even just start to improve our performances I'll be a very happy man!
At least we're on the front pages for the moment ,for the right reasons!

Just like the old days, the peasants down here are gutted, as we appear to have come out of disaster, relatively inexpensively.BRISTOL never had a decent side, and a fan base of complete retards.Expect wholesale changes this week, the man does,nt hang about. Despite his absence, you can bet that he is smack uptodate with the proceedings. 4 NEW faces in the transfer window and a new back room staff. We will monopolise the media for the rest of the season. The fans will be really backing KK; he is their man.

P-LEASE you Judas whingers, stop your negative attacks on Keegan. He's not a quitter, he didn't run away when the pressure got too much last time. He left because of dirty dealings done to him from the last hierarchy, but was legally hamstrung from revealing the truth. He never wanted to leave without delivering the goods to the people he dearly loved, and he would not have even considered coming back if there'd been any of the previous lot still here. How grateful we should be for Mike Ashley clearing out the whole bag of dirty laundry or we wouldn't be on cloud nine today. In fact, neither Redknap, Hughes, Mourhino, or any other foreign manager could've done this extremely unique job any justice. Because to do so requires one quality that would have eluded any manager on the planet including Sir Alex and Arsenne Wenger....and that is, being a Geordie with a love for the club and it's supporters. Keegan's father was a Geordie who brought him up on talk about the club and everything black and white, and in my book he is a Geordie. Sir Bobby Robson exudes a passion for us and had his finger on the pulse in what was sadly the twilight of his career. Just see the joy on his face in photo's of him last night at the Stoke game. Alan Shearer obviously has this same quality, that's why he ignored Man. U. to play for us, throwing away hatfuls of medals in the process. Gullit was a great manager at Chelsea but lacked this quality, saying that the Newcastle/Sunderland derby was just another game, and dropping Shearer? Yes dear friends, the man is only 56, loves us and knows us, and under this amazing new owner, the loveable Mike Ashley, will have the backing he never really got last time. I honestly believe that we are entering a new era of ' the entertainers part 2.'' Now we'll show the scurrilous southern press how patient and respectful we are. And won't we just love it.

No doubt the players were boosted by the Messiah's return. Kev will weave his magic. There will be no more buying misfits - he will assess, then target and buy players who "fit" into a team. The Geordie King is back!
