So in the end they weren't singing and dancing on the streets of Billy Mill as North Shields were put to the sword.
A 3-0 win for the reserves but most United fans were more concerned with the lack of new faces in January and the unusual new two tier management system which is now in place.
But Newcastle United's second string handed the travelling Toon fans in North Shields something to shout about against the Northern League Second Division side who gave it a good crack.
Kevin Keegan was present along with his main men Arthur Cox and Terry Mac as they witnessed a 3-0 stroll for the kids.
On show for United was recent signing Ben Tozer and Hungarian under-19 international Tamas Kadar but it was Academy kids Jonny Godsmark and Mark Doninger stole the show.
Godsmark finished from close range 10 minutes before the break and while Doninger's double put the lid on things with his second a long range screamer.
KK managed to sign an autograph for every kid in the ground and also knows exactly what he has below the main first team roster in reserve now.
And with the transfer window looking likley to deliver no new faces, he may well have no choice but to blood a few more of his young guns.
But as the crowd slipped away into Meadow Well's side streets tonight many Geordie fans had already thrown in the towel on the most unsuccessful transfer window so far.
