Toon hammered at Old Trafford

Posted by Lee on January 12, 2008 7:10 PM |

NEWCASTLE UNITED fans were forced to endure a gloomy trip home from Old Trafford tonight as Manchester United ran riot.

The Magpies went in at the break on level terms but crumbled in the second half as Man United piled on the agony for the Toon Army.

United caretaker boss Nigel Pearson recalled fit again Stephen Carr who started ahead of David Rozehnal while Mark Viduka was relegated to the bench with James Milner back after shaking off an illness.

Former Man United man Alan Smith captained Newcastle as they looked for their first win at Old Trafford since 1972.

The home side though were overwhelming favourites and Newcastle were under the cosh just three minutes in.

However, Wayne Rooney wasted a good chance when he blazed over from 18 yards.

With 11 minutes played Newcastle should have taken the lead when Damien Duff crossed from the right to pick out James Milner but his shot was blocked by Rio Ferdinand when he had time and space.

And the black and whites had another opportunity when Michael Owen won the ball off Michael Carrick before Duff cracked a shot just over with his right foot from long range.

Man U then had two penalty appeals waved away after both Ronaldo and then Ryan Giggs clashed with Steven Taylor and Alan Smith respectively but Newcastle reached the 30 minute mark unscathed.

Newcastle did have the ball in the back of the net at the Stretford End when Carr slipped in Owen but even though he finished well he was ruled offside with TV replays later proving he was level.

In the second half Man U started strongly again but both Rooney and Carlos Tevez were denied by an amazing double block by Taylor.

But Newcastle could do nothing to stop Ronaldo on 50 minutes when the Portuguese star sent a low free-kick beyond Given and into the net after the Man U danger man had won a free-kick following some marginal contact from Smith.

Four minutes later and it was 2-0 when Carlos Tevez lashed home from close range.

In a comical moment Given cleared the ball from a poor Enrique backpass with the ball bouncing off Cacapa and into the path of Giggs who rolled it home for the South American to score.

The Magpies attempted to rally and just before the hour when an N’Zogbia shot was parried by Edwin van der Sar with Owen unable to convert the rebound.

Caretaker gaffer Pearson introduced Viduka with 26 minutes left as the Aussie replaced Milner.

It was all over with 20 minutes left when Man U grabbed number three after Tevez slipped in Ronaldo before he casually controlled and finished inside the box to make it 3-0.

Rio Ferdinand made it 4-0 after Rooney played him in with a neat pass before the England defender slotted home.

With three minutes to go Ronaldo made it five Enrique’s poor clearance fell into the Portugal international’s path before he lashed it past Given.

But the scoring wasn't over for the home side and Tevez sidefooted home an effort in off the bar to complete the rout.

And to add to Newcastle's woes Alan Smith was sent off for arguing with ref Halsey in stoppage time.

MAN UNITED: Van der Sar, Evra (Simpson 67), Ferdinand, Ronaldo, Anderson (Fletcher 72), Rooney, Giggs (Nani 72), Vidic, Carrick, O’Shea, Tevez.

Subs: Park, Kuszczak.

NEWCASTLE: Given, Carr, Enrique, Taylor, Cacapa, Duff, Milner (Viduka 64), N’Zogbia, Butt, Smith, Owen (Rozehnal 83).

Subs: Emre, Harper, LuaLua.

Crowd: 75,965

Ref: Mark Halsey.

Smith. Uh. What is he good for?
Absolutely nothing.

Thanks a bunch, BSA.

Ant n Dec are quoted as 500-1 for next Newcastle manager. They should be appointed - we could have toon tucker trials! - fans could vote via mobile phones during the course of a game and any players thought to be underperforming could be dragged out at the end of a match and challenged to eat worms, wrestle fat Big market lasses with blotchy legs etc..

reasonable first half but an absolute shocker in the second even allowing for the fact that man utd were a joy to watch with so many options in both attack and defence.taking off milner wasn't the smartest change and how about a mind boggling decision to bring on rozendal for owen.what an inspiration from pearson.how long before those in charge of united realise that there is no midfield domination and how long before they realise that smith is a liabilty.too easy for opposition when united fail consistently with clearances and as good as shay is in goal, set plays are always a big big problem for him.where to from here? it is fortunate that a few precious points were gotten earlier on as we certainly are in relegation form.maybe a win against stoke and bolton can be a platform to better things.

well it didnt go too bad for 1st 45 mins yes man u looked a threat going forward but we definatly should have gone in one up

then it went all downhill from there finishing up with laurel and hardy defending and a shining example of captaincy

Why at 3-0 down does pearson take off a forward and replace with a centre half why not give lua lua another 15 mins

Why was smith not replaced with viduka instead of milner or emre would have saved him from a ban(yes there is a silver lining woohoo.....always look on the brightside of life)

1st half was as well as we have played and if we go at stoke the same way wednesday we can have our reward of a trip to the emirates(just gets easier)

well if any potential mangerial candidates were watching think a couple may have withdrawn their cv,s

this is all part of being a toon fan but we actually had more of a go at man utd tonight than a lot of teams this season

I hate to say it. Smith is ok and I hope he stays for the long haul. The guy literally gives it his all. I think he's calm and keeps is composure and last but not least, he has talent. Nige Apple and Pearson looks to be going elsewhere and Nicky Butt is getting worse and worse. I haven't seen anything from the so called hero of the past who was the catalyst behind Man U's successful reign as a top football club worldwide. Roeder was good but he's a quiter or did he get fired? Which ever he was the best and made an immediate impact when he took over for Souness. After the first half I thought Newcastle had a chance. And why doesn't any manager ever make changes immediately after the first half? Good luck to all.

Shay made a lot of saves but he was responsible for the 2nd goal no question.

Shocking,,,,,,

Hope you have a better night than i did.

To all those that complain about Smith, please remember he's a centre forward. I thought Pearson might have had a bit of sense and played him in his proper position, unlike Allerdyce did. Wrong, and then he takes off a forward and puts on a defender. What was that decision. I'm sure I saw Lua lua and Emre on the bench. Pearson must follow out of the door very quickly; should he have ever been there in the first place.

Like I've said for the last few weeks - Bolton and Boro at SJP are MUST win. If we don't beat them - we are going to be in a relegation fight. A genuine relegation fight. Nobody who pays an ounce of attention needs reminding of just how awful we are, and nor the remaining fixture list.

Devastating, and now more and more supporters are waking up to the reality of a bottom of the table scrap.

Will this sick joke turn into a nightmare?? Maybe it already has.

Two very positive outcomes from this debacle:
1. Nigel callmevinnie Pearson has been given the chance to show the world what a sh*** manager and coach he is with inept selection and substitutions. He will now go, hopefully very soon.
2. Smith has clearly shown why he will NEVER be captain in our glorious renaissance. As a bonus he will also be unavailable for a few games...

Philip wrote...

I don't think we could have expected anything other than a loss at Old Trafford, but I would have hoped that the players had enough pride in themselves and the fans to keep the score reasonable. The second half looked more like an early round cup match between two entirely mismatched sides.

Sam's tactics and inability to get the best out of the players were roundly criticized for the team's poor performance in the first half of the season, but much of the blame must lay with the poor quality of the players on the pitch.

The only players on the squad with any value (players decent teams might be willing to sign) are Milner, N'Zogbia, Enrique, Martins and possibly Given and Emre. Barton has talent, but off-the-field antics diminish his value. The rest of the players are past their primes and are castaways from other teams: Butt, Smith, Owen, Duff, Geremi, Carr, Viduka, Cacapa, etc.

I think Sam was right on when he emphasized the need to build around younger talent. Fans want immediate success, myself included, but the most realistic goal should be to bring a group of younger players into the squad to build a central core around as ManU did with Becks, Scholes, Giggs and the Nevilles. Improving youth recruitment and scouting might be the best step Ashley could take for improving the team's future, but I doubt investing in the team for longer term success matches his investment goals.

We cannot compete with the top teams for transfer fees, and we should not be forced to settle for second-tier players who play without either conviction or skill.

Sad...sad...sad. The new manager needs to start from scratch. A player assessment will reveal the damage inherited from Shepherd, Alladyce et al. There are highly paid players who are just at NUFC for the easy money. Michael Owen and Mark Viduka should take a good look in the mirror, be honest and relinquish their contracts. They are simply not interested. We have been a soft touch for undertalented players. Smith and Barton and several others, simply not good enough, but how do you get them off the payroll?

Terry Seacy wrote...

There is only 1 person we can appoint to bring any form and good results back to us and that is Mourinihuo.
The kind of money that was reported to be offered to Harry Redknapp would surely be close to the mark for the ex Chelsea boss. Remember he went to Chelses and thanks to the support of his millionaire boss was able to bring trophies to Stamford Bridge. We have the same situation, Mike is a millionaire and he wants trophies at St James Park. I understand Mike is on the continent doing some business. Well he is in the right place to speak with him. There is no one in England who can do the job. The good ones are signed up, the rest are cast offs. Alan Shearer would be my choice if we cannot get Mourinihuo.

Alan Smith is not good enuff for any premiership team ( not even ours ) so glad he was sent off for being a twit. MO looks very unhappy these days thus proving the point that shed loads of dough can't buy happiness ! I see a few folks here having a pop at Shay even though without him we would have lost 10 or 11 nil - get a grip ! Mike Ashley and Mr Mort have jumped the gun and we now find ourselves looking like the biggest joke in British football ( again ) - will NUFC ever learn ?? Shearer and Keegan are not the answer - talk about taking two steps back to move one forward ! Break the bank and get Jose in - he knows what it takes to win unlike Laurel & Hardy, Ant & Dec or Keegan & Shearer !

Mike Ashley & Chris Mort should drag Nigel Pearson into the boardroom first thing Monday and morning and tell him in no uncertain words to leave. Where was Duff playing? Milner off for Viduka when Smth was already on the pitch as a midfielder? Owen off for Rosenhal? The man is a joke: if I was Ashley I would sue him for soiling the good name of NUFC and making us a laughing stock on Saturday. Did Pearson do this on purpose? I can't believe he really thought he was doing the right thing.

On that subject, I would also sue Freddy Shepherd and make him pay out of his own pocket any compensation that is going to be due to Allardyce: he knew his time was up as chairman yet he still went ahead with the appointment offering a long term mulit million £ contract.

Mr Ashley: you are well known, regarded and respected as a shrewd, tough, no-nosense operator, 41 years of age, billionaire, that speaks volumes. Now please demonstrate to us loyal supporters how you, from nothing, became so successful and became the envy of the sports retail world. Realise our and your dream of turning this club into what it really should be.

Let's not dwell too much on the humiliating defeat at Old Trafford, it might well have been different had Owens' wronly dissallowed goal stood. But nevermind that, did anyone read the peice in the news of world from Mike Ashley, if he sticks to his word then things are about to change very much for the better. Reading between the lines I can see that he now wants Keegan so get your money on quick.

I'm not entirely convinced that Keegan is wright at this stage, I still prefer to go for Mourinho or Vaan Gaal, the reason for this is purely the winning mentality that comes with these guys. As much as I loved the Keegan philosophy he does tend to run when the going gets tough, remember England and Man city, and as for Shearer he's not ready yet.

So lets as a geordie nation take time to reflect and get the choice of manager wright, a month now could save years of turmoil in the bigger scheme of things, too many rash decisions have been made in the past, too much money wasted on players and managers not upto the job of TOON manager it's a very different job to the norm in football management, so a special man is needed, so step forward the special one Mr Jose Mourinho even if it means waiting till the summer it will be worth the wait.

NUFC are a total shambles, a Chairman & Owner who have no knowledge of the game. Why sack a manger at this stage of the season and not have an obvious replacment who will ACCEPT the job? Our season starts here.
We need to draw a line under all of the previous matches.
We played more diagonal forward play at old trafford than we have all season.
I was pleased that we had a go and but for a mistake by the linesman we would have ben 1 up in a match that was always going to be beyond us.
What we do need though is someone in the dugout who is very vigilant and can see errors in a heartbeat and make the back four push up we invited trouble by going back to a trait from sams era deep suicide defending!!!
The regime in the dugout are not up to it and need terminating.
I honestly believe the lads will sort it together and beat stoke and go on a run of wins and draws.
Straight after the match i watched mowbray come streaming to his technical area demand his team push up the field and low and behold get a goal we need to employ the like of and get rid of a few hangers on

Ian Mack: I thought Pearson might have some sense, and not played Smith at all! He may be a forward, played out of position, but I've said it before and I'll say it again - If Smith is on the park we will ALWAYS have a better player on the bench. Up front, Stroller and Carrol are better options. In midfield....well, he ain't a midfielder, is he? I just can't get my head around it .. he should not be on the park, full stop.

As for making him team Captain? Jesus christ, who dreamt that one up?

They all need some fire in their bellies, or rockets up their arses. It is so simple: Throw some money at Taylor instead of some half-baked manager, give Taylor an improved contract, make him club captain and tie him down for life!! He is our only inspiration (Apart from Charlie who is undoubtedly our best player).
