United rocked again as Villa run riot

Posted by Lee on February 9, 2008 2:46 PM |

Kevin Keegan's search for victory continued today as Aston Villa ran riot at Villa Park.

A Michael Owen goal had started the day in fine style for KK and United but Carew’s second half hat-trick helped seal the points for Villa.

Toon chairman Chris Mort took his place in the stands for the clash with the Villains with the St James’s Park chief flanked by executive directors Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez.

KK confirmed after the game that Nigel Pearson resigned from his role as coach.

And it is understood that reserve team coach Adam Sadler will be promoted to first team bench duty with a replacement second string gaffer expected.

Meanwhile KK handed Habib Beye a start on his return from the African Cup of Nations with the former Marseille skipper taking up his usual place at right-back.

And despite shaking off a calf injury Jose Enrique was named as sub with Stephen Carr switched to the left hand side of the back four.

With Emre relegated to the bench and Charles N’Zogbia suspended Keegan recalled former Villa favourite James Milner returned to the starting XI.

And with four minutes played it was Milner’s first significant contribution of the day that gave Newcastle an early lead.

A swirling cross from the left into the six-yard box found Owen who then directed a stooping header beyond Scott Carson to help the United star bounce back from the disappointment of being left out by England in midweek.

United survived a scare on the 15 minute mark when a Wilfred Bouma effort took a deflection to catch out Shay Given but the Toon keeper was equal to it at the second attempt.

Five minutes later and Barton crashed in a low shot but England stopper Carson held on to deny the former Man City star.

With four minutes left of the first half United were indebted to Given when he produced a two handed save low down after John Carew headed Ashley Young’s set-piece dangerously towards goal.

The two sides went in level at the break but United were stunned by two goals in a minute at the start of the second period with Villa buoyed by a double substitution at the break.

Just three minutes in, Villa’s bright start paid off as Bouma’s deflected daisy-cutter found a way past Given with the Eire stopper rooted to the spot.

Two minutes later and Villa snatched the lead after a Young corner picked out Carew in the six-yard box and the Norwegian’s back header went in off a post for 2-1.

United were then rocked by an injury to Given on 54 minutes with Steve Harper taking his place between the sticks.

With 20 minutes to go Harper was tested to the limit by sub Gardner when he kept out a sizzling shot low down as he turned the effort round the post.

Seconds later he denied the Villa ace Gardner again with a great one handed save but the home side soon extended their lead.

From the resultant corner United failed to clear and Carew pounced to make it 3-1 from close range.

In the dying stages Newcastle defender Carr handballed to earn Villa penalty to give Carew the chance to score his hat-trick.

And the big Norwegian made no mistake as he blasted the ball down the middle to pile on the agony for United and the travelling Toon Army.

VILLA: Carson, Bouma, Mellberg (Gardner 46), Laursen, Barry, Young (Osbourne 90), Carew, Davies, Petrov (Harewood 46), Reo-Coker, Maloney.

Subs: Stuart Taylor, Knight

UNITED: Given (Harper 54), Beye, Carr, Steven Taylor, Cacapa, Milner, Butt, Barton (Emre 73), Duff, Smith, Owen.

Subs: Enrique, Faye, Viduka.

Well who saw that coming at half-time?

Well actually me, and I would hope everybody else, for the second that half-time whistle blew with the score at 1-0 and the subs, Harewood and Gardner were briefed on the touchline, I knew that Villa meant business and the fact that we are notorious for switching off immediately after we come out after the team-talk.

One thing that is bugging me after this one, is why was Enrique on the bench, why if he was deemed fit enough to make the bench, was he not deemed fit enough to start, why take someone who’s not fit??? That smacks of Sam Allardyce.

The mere fact that Carr is on the field, means we start with a man off, plus if you add the ‘Smith Factor’ into the equation, it really baffles me how we got into a 1-0 lead in the first place.

Plus the goal-scorer Michael Owen, whilst scoring, has looked one-dimensional in the past few games, now we shouldn’t be criticising people for sticking one in the onion-bag (Especially when players like Smith still get a game) but he has looked like a lazy player in recent months.

I made a statement circa 2002, that I wouldn’t swap Craig Bellamy for Michael Owen, knowing full well that Owen was by far the better finisher (And still is) but I would take Bellamy in my side every time (Despite his baggage and tiff with Shearer)

He’s a pest, a nuisance, an annoying little squit, you just can’t leave alone, not even for a minute and someone who will badger defenders for 90 minutes, instead of the static Owen at present.

We seem shot-shy and lacklustre for far too long periods and the idea of Barton in the middle, is become more and more painful, as he and Butt seem to do the same job and seem unwilling to strike the ball and test the ‘keeper.

The difference between now and 1991 is very little, we have Keegan in charge and we still need saving from the drop, the only difference is we now have far richer players at our disposal, and were in the top league.

Kevin Keegan has been complimentary with regards to Alan Smith in the past and that’s fine, but he will have to learn that with him in the side, we will go nowhere.

I’m betting he gets more red cards this season than goals, he will certainly get more yellow’s than goals that isn’t even open to debate- He simply ISN’T a footballer and shouldn’t be considered beyond this season.

Kevin has been put into an almost impossible situation, he won’t get the blame from us fans if the worst actually happens, whatever happens this season, as the season was a write off before we all went up into our lofts and got the Christmas decorations down- but after poor showings against Derby away (And then again at home) that was surely the time to dismiss Allardyce and get a new man in- whoever we got.

Commenting on a phone-in this week, Kev was asked the question ‘Can you perform miracles?’ to which he obviously replied- ‘No!’ but with Stephen Carr, Alan Smith, Mark Viduka and Shola Ameobi all at the club and getting games regular- he may just have to.

Paul.

We are in a very serious situation where the team has not got the fitness required for survival at this level.
We are slow to close down and get there late giving away free kicks or allow the pass. We are slow to build and laboured and must have the smallest team who are weak on the ball.
Remember Allardyce saying early on how he had to stop the fitness training because the squad overall did not have the basic fitness to start with.
We are in a catch 22 situation where upping the fitness work will cause injury and we cant last 90 minutes of premier football.
KK has his work cut out here!!!
A start would be for aerobic fitness training at altitude!!! and 4,5,1 away from home.

When we needed a defensive strategy against a team full of tall playerswhere was faye ? They are paid enough so they should be professional and play even when they havent had their beauty sleep. And why is he bothering with Smith and Barton ? what a waste of money ? Bartron was giving the ball away with every touch of the ball and Smith couldnt lead his fog for a walk never mind the line.. well maybe a washing line.
4-1 was tactilcally inept, but I dont blame Kev, but I blame a bunch of overpaid wooses. how about working for a living Barton instead of using your fists over a squannle about a big mac, the only thing big about barton is his head.. and as for Smith - do us a favour.. walk out

Now that really was shambollic. I hope that was Stephen Carr's last performance as a Newcastle player, he was shocking. Kept giving the ball away, awful defending and that hand ball was a joke. I finally agree with what everyone is saying about Smith... he truly is awful. Joey Barton has been dreadful all season and no change today after playing quite well against Boro. It confuses me that all week Keegan has raved about Emre and then starts him on the bench? When Emre was brought on we actually looked like we were about to do something. I just hope we are not relegated but it is looking that way. I just hope Keegan gets it right for the last few games. Bring back Faye and Enrique to the team please dear christ.

Get rid of stephen carr waste of space who has done nothing for the toon than cocking up our chances of winning. Also replace Butt with Emre as emre is more attacking and creative than than fouling, yellow card collecting waste of time that is Nicky Butt

WE are in serious trouble now people. Todays result reflected that, 4-1 against a Villa side who are ok, better than the toon certainly, but 4-1!! When you look at our squad properly it is actually rather poor, all these people who say on paper our squad is top half material are sadly wrong.

Given: Yep good goalie
Carr: Cant defend
Taylor: Good young defender, but needs a high quality experienced defender to work along side
Cacapa: oh dear
Enrique: Clearly not very good, as both keegan and allardyce refuse to play him
Milner: yep hes good, but not the finished article
Barton: Another flop
Butt: Past it, although at least he trys
Duff: See Butt
Nzogbia: Genuine talent, star of the team but gets wasted at LB
Smith: He puts in the effort, but lacks anything resembling quality
Owen: Past his best, but still a class act in my opinion, but lack of service means he disappears from the game
Viduka: Class act, but only plays when he feels like it
Ameobi: HA!
Martins: Good player, but lacks composure

And add in lack of confidence and effort to that lot and it really is no surprise we are now in the relegation battle.

But dont worry were at Fortress St James next week so thats 3 points isnt it, its only Man....oh.

Another Jekyll and Hide performance that has me seriously concerned for our premiership status come next season.
We actually played well first half but self destructed in the second. On current form we would struggle in the championship. We simply cannot pass to each other and we dont close any team down we just back away and invite pressure.
Barton + Butt constantly give possession away while Carr is bad which ever position he plays in and Viduka has more days off than Father Christmas. The fixture list makes for scary reading and i cant see where our much needed points will come from. I hope Ashley was serious when he talks about wanting a team to challenge Man U but it's going to cost him a few quid 'cos the majority of our current players aren't good enough, confidence or not!
I would like us to go after Micah Richards and have a fast decent centre half for a change and definitely some flair in midfield, the problem is attracting them to a side not in europe (or london, where it seems all players have relatives they miss) and has had its fair share of bad publicity.
Once survival is certain I can look forward to the summer and the transfers Keegan will try and bring in but its going to be a tense wait in the mean time!

Milner is one of the brightest things at Newcastle and Emre has always been a homer since he signed for us. I have never known Emre to have a good away day. Keegan needs to rebuild the black and white army so we can be a force to be reckoned with.

it's seems that every game is a carbon copy of the last good start ,full of enthusiasm sometimes a goal from utd.and then the ref blows halftime.a different team comes out with very little idea how to preserve a lead and very few chances of scoring.players who need mentioning having a 90 minute game are nil.milner was good for most of the time a great cross for owen to score but how many other crosses were there?i'm afraid to echo the views of most other posts but kk has to scrap his idea of playing smith butt duff carr.Viduka was not used for reasons only known to kk but looking at him in the stands was a picture of a player who wishes he wasn't there.the smoggies are now ahead and the makkems only a win away close enough to pass the lads after next weeks game against manu.we are now playing football good enough to get the drop to championship come on lads show some fire in your bellies and a bigger effort in the 2nd half.

Is it just me imagining things or do most of our team have a look a like stand in during the week, performing magnificently in training, then the real muppets come along on match day and we see cr"% like we did today? What is it with Butt, Barton, Smith, Carr and Duff?!! Everyone praises Smith for his commitment and workrate, that's great, but he achieves SFA. And Barton, please! I haven't played football in 10 years but give me a pair of boots and I'd do a better job than that. He can't keep the ball, he can't pass the ball and his defensive skills amount to thuggery if he thinks he can get away with it. Carr today was a nightmare - he's never performed for us. What's the point in paying all that dosh for Enrique and then having him sit on the bench. How's he going to gain experience? Stick him in there and I guarantee he'll put more effort into it than that waste of space. What about Emre? Why on earth does he not start? OK, he may not be the greatest defensive player in the world but at least he pushes on and creates things. And again, is it me or does Taylor play with a smirk on his face when we start losing and starts putting the boot in and making daft mistakes? I'm not suprised we are free falling towards a relegation fight - most of these halfwits probably don't give a monkeys, as if we go down [which at the moment is a distinct possibility] they'll be off to pastures new. At this rate we will be lucky to stay up. There undoubtedly will be chat along the lines of 'sure it couldn't happen to Newcastle' then the next thing you know the championship fixture list is out and there we are. There seems to be something seriously wrong with our club behind the scenes - and no I don't put it down to the 'Shearer Factor'. I'm not convinced KK can do the job this time round, never have been, but I'll give him my support. I think we all need to keep things in perspective, especially when it comes to wanting to buy this player and that player in the summer - I'd be happy enough staying in the premiership.

I'm sick of reading postings where people are eager to point out we're not a big club. After supporting NUFC through the eighties and nineties and getting tonked of sides like Exeter City, throwing massive leads away at home against the likes of Charlton in the days of Ardilles, I'm just relieved that we are in the Premier League and haven't yoyo'd up and down like the makems. It would be tragic to go down just as it's a shame we aren't able to compete with the big boys or get a decent cup run going, however, with KK and MA I believe we can achieve in the long run. Smith, Barton, and Butt? It's our defence that's useless and has been for ages - we should have pushed for Woodgate in the same way we pushed for Owen. Time to roll the sleeves up lads and keep us up!

The way the Premiership is these days, I'm sure Kev realises that we need a couple of big strong athletic guys up front (like Ferdinand and Shearer were). Look how often our defenders get physically mauled before we concede goals. Michael Owen might poach the odd goal, but no-one gets clattered and taken out. Defenders hate the rough physical battle. Right now, we're powder puff - a day off from the challenges. We will have to put people behind the ball to survive, and hold a lead. Kev is in a really tough spot! Forget about entertainment - now it's survival.

Without wishing to be accused of doom and gloom we are in BIG TROUBLE! Our stats for the last nine prem. games make appalling reading. 3 points out of 27, five goals scored and 19 conceded. There are only two teams below us which have picked up fewer points than us (Derby and Reading), we have scored the lowest number of goals and are equal with Reading with most goals conceded. We keep very few clean sheets, can’t score goals and the second half seems to be a struggle for us. I write all this for two reasons:

1 Alot of fans seem to think in way similar to true-faith.com, which said recently, “We’re not going to go down if only for the simple reason that the bottom six are collectively (expletive deleted) rank. Well, I beg to differ. We are RANK. We are not too big/good to go down. The unimaginable could happen very soon – both the Smogs and Mackems above us in the table!
2 We need to give our team full and committed support, partic at SJP. Our Premiership survival might depend upon it.
About the Villa game. Why did we play Carr at LB with Enrique on the bench? When the score was 3-1 why did we bring on a midfielder and not Viduka? This offering should in no way be considered as a rant agst KK but surely somebody – and that body was Terry McD – should have told him that the squad needed to enlarged/strengthened during the transfer window.
Howay the lads and lets hope we will start winning soon, but with the Mancs, Blackburn, and Liverpool to play next ….Oh dear!

These days i fear the likes of Wigan, so to lose at Villa park 4-1 is of absolutely no surprise. My prediction for the match was that we would score one, but would concede 3-4, so i got that right, but i for one am not blaming Keegan, because he inherited this lame squad.

its for all to see who we need to get rid of!!!I didn't listen to the phone in the other night, with king kev, but i hope many of the callers gave him a bit to think about.
Lets just hope we can pull together and get through this season without the unthinkable, because without fight and a bit of thought, who knows!we havent got the quality as many of us had thought and hoped for, and anything CAN happen. we are now as short as 6/1 for the drop, so if anythign the odds are in our favour at least!!

I think Phil is completely right. I'm sick of seeing Smith, Owen and Martins being constantly out muscled. We definately need someone like Shearer was in that department. Harewood showed he could do that against Cacapa today but who is there out there with that strength and quality?

DEVASTATED.we ARE in BIG TROUBLE.i am a keegan fan but yesterday was a lot of his fault. OK the team he inherited is short on quality but we will NEVER win again this season if he keeps playing BARTON,SMITH,BUTT,CACAPA and CARR.Is this the same barton who kept man city in the prem on his own virtually or have we bought his twin?Smith is rubbish, good business by manu, says alot about FSA.I am fitter and can pass the ball better than butt, whose legs have gone the same way as geremis.Cacapa must be about 40,and Carr.....words fail me.Duff tries to beat himself with the ball, milner head down arse up.......look up son.WHY was faye on the bench?best CB at the club by a mile, and Viduka?? Has there been a falling out with KK? we have one ball player at the club with a bit of creativity so what was emre doing on the bench?we played well for 20 mins in the first half and then got trounced by a moderate(judging by this game)side, albeit with a bit of bad luck, but we always seem to be saying that. I am extremely worried and not at all confident that this lot are up for the fight.Woke up this morning, bright sunlight, felt great, then i remembered that game, and thats when it clouded over.I really dont wanna be so pessimistic but i cannot look at things any other way just now.GUTTED.

As an exiled season ticket holder living in Staffordshire imagine my delight with only having to travel 35 miles instead of 200 to watch my beloved Toon. Glorious day, great support, great start thanks to Owen then half time comes and we fold like poor poker player. I agree with others on this Blog as to some of the team selection and substitutions, Enrique, Emre and Faye should have started with Viduka coming on at 2-1. Cacapa proved he hasn't the heart for a fight and playing Carr at left back is a disaster waiting to happen. Keegan has some hard decisions to make if we are going to avoid the drop, I hope he has the bottle to drop those who are not fit to wear the shirt Another dissapointment for me on Saturday was the attitude of two so called supporters who were standing in front of me, they slagged every player off even when we were in front, then threatened a couple of young fans who disagreed with them, these were middle aged men who should know better. I know we live in a democrecy and everyone has a right to their own opinion but as these young lads were saying we have to support our players no matter what, not always easy I agree but aren't we supposed to be the best supporters in the country, I sometimes wonder. Relegation is a possibility and we have to accept that but lets all give everything to the cause and fight to the end, no one has the devine right to be in the Premiership, Howay The Lads.
