Agony goes on for the Geordies

Posted by Lee on March 1, 2008 5:02 PM |

Newcastle United remain at the wrong end of the Premier League table tonight after being hit by a sucker punch from Matty Derbyshire.

The Blackburn sub snatched a dramatic late winner in the final minute at St James’s Park on a day when the Magpies dominated the game but failed to convert their chances.

Keegan replaced Frenchman Charles N’Zogbia following the 5-1 defeat against Manchester United as Jose Enrique began his first game since Arsenal away in January in the FA Cup.

The player had limped off that day with a calf injury but after shaking off the problem had been unable to force a way into KK’s team until today.

But KK kept faith in Alan Smith as the England international started up front with skipper Michael Owen.

It also meant Toon favourite Oba Martins started the game on the bench after recovering from an ankle problem.

United went into the game looking for their first victory in the Premier League since December 15 at Fulham with their last home win coming just seven days before against Birmingham.

United kicked off the game with a rainbow as backdrop behind the East Stand and looked determined to end their woeful run of form.

Newcastle created a great chance with just three minutes on the clock as James Milner made a great run down the right before rolling it into the path of Damien Duff only for the Irishman’s stabbed effort to roll agonisingly wide of the post.

Smith then forced a corner on eight minutes and after Duff’s corner had been charged down Milner’s swirling right wing cross found the head of the former Man United striker who sent a flicked header just inches over the top.

United’s best chance of the opening quarter came on 21 minutes.

Owen rolled it unselfishly for Smith but the England man was unable to get any contact on it and when it landed at the feet of Duff it was Blackburn star Morten Gamst Pedersen who blocked the goalbound effort.

Owen was also slipped in 10 minutes before the break and after rounding former Liverpool team-mate Brad Friedel he could only screw the ball wide.

Blackburn created little in terms of chances but Harper had to be alert with eight minutes left of the first half as Andre Ooijer cracked one just wide of his right hand post.

However, Newcastle went in level at the break after being frustrated by Blackburn.

Newcastle made a steady start to the second half and forced two corners inside six minutes but were still unable to find the breakthrough.

On 53 minutes Smith broke free of his marker Christopher Samba after Barton’s pass but he hit his shot wide on the turn.

Two minutes later and United stretched Blackburn to the limit as Nicky Butt’s clever chipped pass from the right was headed at goal by Owen yet Friedel managed to somehow tip it over at Gallowgate.

With 61 minutes played Barton picked out Owen, however, his side footed effort was deflected wide of the post by Friedel’s foot as Newcastle were left cursing their luck once again.

With 26 minutes left Martins made his return to the United first team since the clash with Man City almost two months as Butt made way for the Nigerian ace.

On 78 minutes Keegan introduced N’Zogbia for Duff with time running out for the Magpies.

Martins picked out Milner at the front post with 11 minutes left but Friedel again dented the hopes of the Geordie Nation.

Tempers boiled over seconds later as Habib Beye failed to hand the ball back to Pedersen on the touchline for a throw as an 18 man brawl, involving coaching staff and players, followed in a tense finish.

Beye and Pedersen were both booked in an ugly incident that required a policeman to aid the separation of the United and Blackburn players.

United were indebted to Harper with two minutes left when his great block denied Santa Cruz after Matty Derbyshire picked him out at the back stick.

But disaster struck for Newcastle in the final minute when, with United on the attack, Rovers caught them on the break and Bentley sent Derbyshire clear before he slotted home following a one on one with Harper.

UNITED: Harper, Beye, Enrique, Faye, Taylor, Milner, Butt (Martins 67) Barton, Duff (N’Zogbia 78), Smith, Owen.

Subs: Forster, Carroll, Cacapa.

ROVERS: Friedel, Ooijer, Warnock, Samba, Emerton (Derbyshire 60), Santa Cruz, McCarthy (Roberts 60), Pedersen, Khizanishvili, Reid.

Subs: Brown, Tugay, Mokoena

Crowd: 50,796

Ref: Rob Styles.

Well if anyone DIDN’T anyone see that coming?

It was so obvious it was untrue, that’s probably us down I’m afraid- For if we can’t win a game like that were not going to win any game- but again if you play Alan Smith for 90 minutes - DON’T EXPECT GOALS!!!!

Please anyone, criticise me, slate me, hang, draw and quarter me, I couldn’t give a s**t, there is nothing else to say on the man, it’s a testimony to the side that they played that well with such a donkey on the field.

Enrique looks shaky at times, but it gave the defence a slightly more sturdy and balanced look, but, again- criticise me, slate me, hang, draw and quarter me,- he’s become my scapegoat for just about every game we don’t win and I don’t make any apologies for that- he’s come from being just a poor player in the side to my own personal hate figure.

Mr Barton was atrocious (Part 25) and again a lad I like, Steven Taylor is now looking dodgy for long periods.

The Captain is also a problem as Owen ISN’T one and doesn’t inspire me- but I can forgive that as we should have won the game by a mile.

But goals win games and with Alan Smith on the field- DON’T EXPECT GOALS!!!!

Paul.

What do we have to do to get a win?
We cannot rely on other teams dropping points and eventually we will be fighting for our lives. I guess the good news is that Derby and Fulham look like going down but that still leaves one more place. I want to be able to complain but I can't seems like Stephen Taylor had another bad game aswell as Barton. Where was Geremi? Smith needs to be dropped for the next game there is no chance of him scoring in this century.

I cant belive it another lose. This game was surley a must win,on the positive note sounds like we created alot of chances and to be honest im suprised at Owen. But in reality we have lost another game against a team we really should be beating i know we were searching for the goal but wouldnt it have made sense to leave a few more defenders back derbyshire had all day to fire that goal in.With 2 away games coming up against Liverpool and Birmingham coming up its hard to see were the next win is going to come from because we are certainly not to to go down i would have liked to have seen oba martins start instead of smith credit to smith he gives 100 % but his job is to score goals which he cleary dosent do.Relagation seems like a real posibilty now.

OMG Lee and i am so sad and mad that the team left the back wide open as when you attack you need the security of defenders.

It sounded on the radio that we played well, and we have liverpool next week and we can only hope they have a hard midweek game but i can see us being beated by a couple of goals.

We are well and truly in it.....

Other teams are winning below us and we will get dragged in it, and i am pleased that ramage will be back and home we get that diatta in as well to help with the defence before another prem team get him.

I feel like having a couple of ben & jerrys pints??????

I agree with the comments about smith, i thought barton had a good game for a change, he played a couple of good through balls where we should have scored. Taylor was dodgey at the back Enrique was the best left back ive seen for a while and he didnt panik. only change i would make for liverpool martins for smith. Finally why o why did we commit so many players forward for the last five minutes #*#* 1 point is better than non. yes we deserved all three but at this end of the table 1 point could mean all the diffrence. Going to liverpool with a good preformance and a point would have lifted moral even more and we could go there looking for a good result.

I don't think Smith will ever be dropped,
I expect to see him in midfield against
Liverpool with Barton being unavailable.
It's ok having the right attitude, but a bit of ability wouldn't go amiss. We've bought too many hasbeens and unfortunately it seems as if they are guaranteed a place in the starting line up on reputation alone. Changes must be made before it is too late, because if we go down, I can't see anyone wanting to buy Smith, Bitt, Barton etc.
We'll be left with a load of dross on big wages and will find it difficult to afford and attract good players to rebuild into a decent premiership team.

Has anyone of the people at the chronicle have the guts to ask keegan does he or ashley pick smith.Having a guy who hasnt scored in 3 years when in a relegation fight is pathetic, and keegans piece in the paper about smith was garbage as his common sense in the last few mins of a football match.

It is hard but we must look at the postives from the game. We bossed the game. More possession, chances, attempts on goal, etc, except for the most crucial, goals! We should have won but the team that deserves to win scores the most goals. It is still down to those four games - Fulham, B'ham, Reading and the Mackems. Unfortunately the teams below us are picking up points but there is no doubt our performances are getting better. For me the disappointing points are Steven T and Martins. Are we really going to give him £26m over the next five years?
Forget Liverpool - we will lose - and focus on the four games.

Hi lee- well thats another game we should have won -no point dwelling on it now we just have to go to Anfield next week and get a result -its not beyond us -but my god we are going to have to fight and chase for every ball- Barnsley did and look what they got. Much as I hate to think Kev has got it wrong -I have to say Duff and Smith are never going to score -no matter how many chances they get - Derbyshire cant get in the Blackburn team -but when he comes on as a sub -he usually scores-thats what we lack -the eye of the tiger in front of goal-Martins and Charlie would be a better bet to get goals in from the start -Smithie gives his all -but he is not and never will be in the hunt for goals-Duff likewise -he is powder puff in front of goal and unless we change it and change it now our freefall into oblivion will continue- If we are not firing with these in front of goal -Carroll should be given a bit more time on the field-I am sure the lad has got goals in him-At the moment we are beating ourselves with our own game plan which is simply not working-Please Kev Martins- Charlie-Carroll- Viduka { when he does decide to be fit }We have tried Smithie and Duff long enough -They are never going to score -Better a 1-1 or 2-2 than nothing at all-we can still do it but not if we cant score goals-Roeder and the shambles played these same card tricks and it eventually cost them dearly -funny they were both defenders -maybe thats where it comes from -we need to attack and be able to score Kev has certainly got them to attack more -but we are relying on non scorers to score goals and they never will- I played this game as well ok I was not in the class of the premiership -and I played in the army with some fantastic players who were then with Division one clubs in army teams- They were much better players than I was -but they could not score goals - I always did -so I know if you have not got the eye of the tiger in front of goal -you will never score goals -that is the problem with the likes of Smithie and Duff.-We need to change it and change it now before its too late.

I'm a dyed in the wool supporter who welcomed KK back as the only logical manager for this unique club. Unique in the sense that our supporters will for the most part, remain such no matter what. I will not now begin to panic about being sucked into the drop zone as many bloggers appear to be, but I am totally bewildered how Kev insists on playing Smith, Barton and Duff left wing ahead of Zog. It can only be that they graft their nuts off in training. Keegan is, I recall, determined when he believes in something and his admiration for hard workers may at this point in time be detrimental to the cause. In a side of skilled players who work well as a team, you need the occasional Smudger to remind the opposition that they're in for no party. But you don't need three of them at the expense of perhaps Zog and Emre playing centre midfield, or even Smith instead of Butt, and at this stage, to not give Carroll a go in the hope of Owen and Smith " cracking it " might just prove costly. We're rapidly running out of games and the fresh enthusiasm of Carroll, who definitely looks dangerous and unpredictable when he's come on, usually too late, could be the catalyst to injecting a second wind in this tired-looking lot. Does Kev read the fans' letters and opinions cos I know he respects us as a knowledgeable bunch and we all seem to be saying the same things about Butt, Smith, Barton and Duff.
