The dreaded R word still haunting United fans

Posted by Lee on March 17, 2008 9:59 PM |

NEWCASTLE UNITED were still thick in the relegation mire tonight but at least picked up a point against fellow relegation candidates Birmingham City.

In a typical game of two halves City dominated the first period and netted through James McFadden only for Newcastle to hit back through Michael Owen in the second half.

However, Kevin Keegan is still looking for his first win with the Fulham game at St James's Park still very much crucial to their chances of survival.

Keegan altered his team for the trip to Birmingham with Alan Smith dropped to make way for the returning Mark Viduka, while Oba Martins was also included in a three man attacking line-up.

However, there was no place at all for Damien Duff as KK wielded the axe in the crunch clash.

With James Milner out with a foot injury Geremi was handed a start in the middle and Joey Barton also returned after missing the 3-0 defeat at Liverpool due to bail conditions.

United found themselves in trouble after just seven minutes when they lost possession in their own half to allow James McFadden a shooting opportunity but the Scotsman’s effort was deflected wide by Habib Beye.

Two half chances followed for City but Newcastle sustained the early pressure.

And before the 15 minute mark there was also a minor interruption when a home fan invaded the pitch to taunt the Toon Army only to be wrestled away by a posse of stewards.

Yet Abdoulaye Faye’s grip on McFadden a minute later wasn’t as effective as Birmingham won a free-kick deep on the right which Gary McSheffrey blasted straight into the wall.

From the resultant corner United didn’t clear their lines, however, Mikael Forssell’s fizzing effort from range skidded the wrong side of the post for the home side to keep it level.

Newcastle’s first glimpse of goal came on 26 minutes from skipper Owen who was slipped in by Martins with the England striker shooting just over the top of the bar.

Former City man Butt hooked one over the top 30 seconds later but his wild effort never troubled Maik Taylor.

With 12 minutes remaining of the first half though a well worked move from Birmingham looked to have gone wrong when Hartlepool-born David Murphy clipped a left wing cross straight into the path of Faye.

But the Senegal international’s misjudgement gifted a simple chance for McFadden who applied the finish from close range and hand City a 1-0 lead.

United struggled to hit back and some tame late pressure was easily gobbled up by City.

And it was Birmingham who emerged the hungrier of the two teams for the second half as Harper somehow kept out Forrsell from close range after United were sliced open again straight from the kick-off.

Toon fans attempted to rally their team after that and helped force two successive corners.

Birmingham were equal to it though and even when Owen wriggled through to hit a goal-bound effort Maik Taylor pulled off a tremendous save to deny the United skipper on 50 minutes.

But Newcastle were level on 55 minutes when a Harper goal kick picked out Martins who exchanged passes with Owen before the Nigerian’s effort was parried by Maik Taylor into the path of the former Real Madrid star who poked home the rebound to make it 1-1.

The goal lifted Newcastle instantly with some committed challenges flying in from the black and whites and Martins was on hand two minutes before the hour mark to try a wicked curling effort with his left peg.

Martins also came close on 67 minutes when his low effort on the turn was tipped wide by Maik Taylor with City starting to buckle under the strain.

The Nigerian’s presence was clearly making an impact in the second half with the Toon Army showing their appreciation to the ex-Inter Milan ace with a series of chants.

However, with 10 minutes left Keegan replaced him with Charles N’Zogbia with the African clearly unhappy with a decision that left both sets of fans stunned.

The tactical move resulted in Newcastle reassembling as a 4-4-2 unit but the substitution meant United lacked fizz in attack.

BIRMINGHAM: M Taylor, Ridgewell, Kelly, Jaidi, Murphy, Muamba, Larsson (Parnaby 46), Johnson, McSheffery, Forssell (Jerome 71), McFadden (Zarate 86)

Subs: Doyle, Nafti

UNITED: Harper, Beye, S Taylor, Faye, Enrique, Barton, Butt, Geremi, Owen, Martins (N’Zogbia 80), Viduka.

Subs: Forster, Cacapa, Smith, Carroll.

Martins shouldn't have been taken off - Geremi or Barton should've gone. Thank God he didn't play Smith, though.

Local hero Steven Taylor is not mature enough for this battle. The lad should be rested for his own and the clubs long term future, Faye, Cacappa and Geremi can cover the center just as well as Taylor and non of them will spread panic as is Taylors wont

Lee I agree completely with your article I caught the last 30 mins of the game and have to say Oba was the spark of the attack, despite a very defensive horrible passing midfield. It was a much better effort but I have to say I did not like the subs that KK made, take away your bets striker and leave an unfit ineffective Viduka baffling, having said that I do not agree with Martins reaction, he should accept the decsion and sit down bad habit that KK dealt with very well by acknowleding Oba.

Hope same Team at home against Fulham except I would sub Geremi with NZogbia.

Geremi and Barton were really rubbish to say the least. Geremi needs to go back to school to learn how to pass, he had a change to setup Oba for a goal inside the box and passes it to a Brim player, he is so useless with crosses and KK still allows him to take all the corners. Butt rose up to the occasion all respect to him. Defense was OK defintely we luck pace in that area which means if we make a mistake we cannot recover, example Faye.

Next game a must win.

At least Keegan made the right decision to drop Smith, but he shouldn't have taken out Martins.
But why N'zogbia isn't starting? In my opinion he is way better than Barton. I think Geremi had his best game in the black & white shirt.
Glad to see Owen still have his predator instinct, is Capello in the stand do help him??
Really do pray they can continue their second half performance into the next home game.

I really cannot comprehend what Keegan is thinking in taking off Martins. He was the man on the pitch that was creating chances and causing problems for Birmingham. Viduka is coming back for an extended layoff, and yet he stays on for the full 90 minutes. Geremi blasted about 5 corners right off the first Birmingham defender, yet he stays on. Barton continues to give away possession, yet he stays on. I don't get it. Plus, Keegan's attempt at making Martins feel better by giving him a hug was even worse. What did that mean?? Did he know that he shouldn't have taken him off? Do we really need our only real threat unhappy as the most important matches arrive?? Isn't Martins' ability the only thing right now that separates Newcastle from teams like Fulham, Sunderland, and Reading???

I agree with Eddie...Martin created a lot of chances. Owen's goal was due to Martin's power shot. Viduka should have been sub if Kevin wants to take out a striker(that is just my 2 cents). It was a very entertain 2nd half. Can't wait to see them play againts Fulham this Saturday.

Why on earth would Kevin want to take off the one player who could have got us three points? What is he thinking? Panicking about losing again? In that case maybe take off Senior Vid and shift Obafemi to the middle? Oh dear Kevin.

BUT, at least we didn’t lose and at least we got a point and at least Smith didn’t start.

The selection and formation was much more what we like; adventurous and attack minded. The team’s lack of confidence is so obvious though, with silly training ground one touch passing and no decisive or incisive offensive strategy.

We will thump Fulham, and then start to play some nice football. I KNOW!

Kevin will then relax a bit and might even decide to see what some of the younger blokes have to offer us in the first team.

But PLEASE Kevin, play Obafemi as a striker and keep him on the field. It is obvious to EVERYONE he is our NUMBER 1 STRIKER!

A good second half but a bad first. A change, isnt it?

Martins was superb in the second half and I think the reason we didnt do well in the first is because he hardly touched the ball. Zog shouldnt be sub out with martins, Viduka should. Mark was good on control but hardly touched the ball in second half.

Martins combined well with Owen that made the change. He should be partnering Owen in the next game too.

Barton was good but still not good enough. He lose possession easily. Geremi needs training in his crosses which was easily seen as weak compared with Milner.

As for the performance, the reason we still are in trouble is because we do too many crossing; long crosses and never got them. The main reason why Big Sam never got it right. Do more running and short passing is more Newcastle.

The team is a fresh without Smith, but I still think he, Barton and Butt must compete for that role in midfield. Our midfield is a disgrace.

Barton was poor - again. Funny how the diatribes against 'foreign' players letting us down haven't been replaced by diatribes against the lousy English players who definitely do let us down - in fact, the local media tend to beef up their reputations.

Martins should not have been taken off.

Well, it's on to Saturday. A win against Fulham should do it, because I can't see Birmingham or Bolton getting many more points.

Barton -2 don't think he found a black and white shirt all night
Geremi 4 Please can someone else take the corners and free kicks
Martins 7 looked dangerous in 2nd half
Owen 8 got in the right positions with good runs should have had two
Viduka 5 some decent touches needs games.

Fulham is a massive game 3pts a must. Much more needed from midfield.

Well, well, well. KK surprised us all by playing three up front, dropping/resting Smith/Duff and Charlie. But once again mickey mouse defending and missing good chances cost us two points. Dreadful first half display which had me in total despair. To be 1-0 down agst Birmingingham - woeful team - summed up our first 45 mins.
I could not believe the transformation in the second half! So, when we looked like we might win the game KK takes off OM!! I could not believe it! No wonder Obafemi looked amazed and upset when he left the pitch. The man to go should have been Geremi. He had seven(!) corners in a row where he did not beat the first man. Why does he have to take most of the throw-ins and corners from both sides of the pitch? His crossing is appalling!
However, we now take on Fulham, and after our our 2nd half performance I am more confident about getting the three points. (Geremi to be rested with Charlie taking his place, MV on the bench and OMMO up front.)
Howay the Toon.

the result last night was obviously welcome claiming a point rather than getting beat and dropping three and to be honest we should have had all 3 points in the second half . the players rolled there sleeves up and the second half performance was what i wanted to see the a few problems though which have already been mentioned
1) geremi was terrible his crosses were awfull and hardly ever beat the first man , and thats not just lasts nights game he constantly gets it wrong and as for his long throw ins but is it just me or do they clearly just not work
2) whenever we had the chance to break down the wing it would get wasted no crosses coming in instead played along the ground and possesion intercepted by the brummies half the time
3) the subsitution was an awfull one it was too late in the game and as for the player that got took off well no wonder he had a mini tantrum i dont blame him he clearly made the difference in the second half and should have been left on without oa doubt , the player that should have gone off was mark viduka he had a terrible game there was very little control from him most of the time and he did nothing most of the game and when he did get the chance to open the game up he chose to be selfish and go it alone eventually being crowded out instead of passing it to an onside micheal owen or obefemi martins who would have had the chance to score , i dont rate him as a player and wether it is he is unfit or what i dont see a place for him in our team next season hopefully

anyway rant over lets avoid the dreaded r word

I don't know about everyone else here but I'm happy with a point. Remember this is the team that dismantled Spurs. I was delighted Smith didn't start but he might have done better in midfield than Barton. Geremi for me looked good however I'm looking forward to Fulham to see if Emre will be back and then I think we can do a lot better with his attacking style. Martins looked very sharp and extremely determined especially with that header beating off all Birmingham players to get his shot and for Owen to grab the goal. If we continue to play like this against Fulham and the likes, I wouldn't worry about relegation.

Medan- I would never criticise a player for the kind of reaction that we saw from Obafemi Martins last night- It was a disgrace to see him coming off and it hurt him- Keegan dealt with it very well and that’s why he’s such a charismatic man.

On the flip side- Keegan could be thinking ‘Keep him for Saturday’ and lets not forget, in going for a win against Blackburn Rovers, we left the back door open and lost.

Viduka had a classic hit and miss game, at times he looked down right shoddy and at times he bounced balls round corners and linked with Martins and Owen pretty well, my major bug-bare, was the midfield, Butt was reasonably solid, Barton was on ice for 90 minutes and didn’t seem to go anywhere, but Geremi? I just don’t understand Kev’s comments other than trying to build his confidence and protect him.

When we signed him, Jose Mourinho told Sir Bobby Robson that we were making a mistake as he’s 32 and plays like a 40 year old- that shone out last night, he looked every bit the 40 year old pub player and his distribution (Not just from corners) was a shambles.

Dave- I want to see that re-action from a player being took off (Like Keane did at the weekend for Spurs) both players when they came off, knew they had the beating of the opposition and were the best players on the park- yet got subbed???? I don’t agree with the decision but Kev will get into Martins and build him up and explain things to him.

Martins will still be firing by the time Fulham come to Toon next weekend and that is what we want to see, a player with something to prove, as long as he keeps the same side, bar maybe Geremi for N’zogbia, I can only see a win for us sgainst the crafty cockneys.

Overall I’m actually quite delighted that we got the draw, it wasn’t a MUST WIN game, but certainly a MUST NOT LOSE game- that we’ve done.

I stated a few weeks ago, the games that will decide our future in this league are Fulham, Reading and Sunderland (ALL at home) and we may only need to win two of them, such is the standard of teams down with us.

If you look at the remaining fixtures, including Portsmouth, Spurs and Chelsea, it’s not looking too clever- so Fulham becomes critical.

Paul.

Good result last night, and it was a shame we didn’t pick up all three points.

Geremi and Barton are terrible – Barton in particular misplaced passes in the first half on four or five occasions, and in the second half, he virtually disappeared.

Let’s have Zog and Martins on the flanks, and hopefully Butt and Emre in the middle on Saturday.

* 1st half was a disgrace - if we play like that again we deserve to be relegated.
* Barton was awful - could not pass to save his life - would love to see the pro zone stats for him
* how many times did Geremi fail to get the ball in the box from a corner - why ask him to take all the set pieces????? he's rubbish. In general set-piece delivery was dreadful. How difficult can it be??
* did we get any crosses in from the bi-line?? the full backs seemed terrified to get foward especially Beye.
* Why take Martins off and not Viduka?
* Barton has to be dropped for N'zogbia - isn't CM his favourite position??
* FAYE looks like he is playing in slow motion - I would be terrified of playing next to him - when is Ramage back? - he may not be quality but he at least is dependable.
* we have a complete lack of pace other than CN and OM
* If Michael Owen is a world class striker why has he taken only 1 of 5 first class chances in this and the Blackburn game?
* If we stay up there are very few players in this bunch i would keep - CN, Milner, Taylor (but only if we can get a good partner for him)

The last 30 games mean nothing, the past means nothing, the next 8 games mean everything. Let's every last one of us get back to that roar before kick off. That buzz that made me want to stand outside stjp just to feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

Well done to the lads and KK for our second half performance last night.

I would just like to make a few points regarding a lot of the comments on here. As far as N`zogbia goes the lad doesn`t want to be here, it`s as simple as that, his heart and head is in London and that`s hardley the sort of player you want on the pitch given the current circumstances,He has talent..and lots of it but he kicked up a fuss at Le Harve before arriving he wanted to leave here last season(remember the Watford game!) And KK has admited he isnt happy here now. That`s why he isnt playing. He could become a great player and he has bags of potential and I would love him to stay, but you cant play players who dont want to be at the club.
I also thought corners apart Geremi played well last night, he always wanted the ball and supplied the service to the front 3 that was lacking in the first half. It was interesting to see KK go with a ppoper 4-3-3 not the 4-5-1 that most managers go with these days . It was similar to when pedro used to play behind a 2. And I though it worked really well the second half.
I honestly cant believe everybody is slating the sub last night? Oba was brilliant, but If anybody was at the boro game surely they didnt want to see the same thing happen again last night? We got a warning down the left when Maumba got free down the left a few mins earlier. Viduka was still holding the ball up well and Owen was clearly our best player. So that onl really left Oba. And a quick point on Owen I notice the criticks who normally slate the lad on here havn`t said much,I`ll say it again its time as a group of fans we got behind 1 of our best players, and a player who is clearly working hard!.

What a difference a goal makes.

By half-time I don't think anyone could've argued the suggestion that this team were not Premier League quality.

A dismal goal to concede, allowing a striker to get goal-side in such a deadly position and no more than two or three shots at goal.

Then a goal and we looked like a proper Newcastle United team, pinning down inferior opposite into their penalty area. I can't remember us winning so many corners as we did after the goal and we only lacked that final killer touch which could've given us the three points.

Our central defence looks shocking, but what was key last night was that because we pinned Birmingham down for the majority of the second half, the defence weren't over-exposed to threats and so we got away with it.

I was ecstatic to see Martins start the game, and although first half he seemed isolated on the left, he really showed that he is the spark we need in this team in the second. I definitely wouldn't have taken him off, and when he did come off, we never looked anywhere near as dangerous.

Still major things to be done though. We had three strikers on the pitch last night and in my opinion (and something I've thought for a long time now) we make far too much of a song & dance in getting the ball into the box from wide areas. Full backs and wingers trying to play 1-2-3-4s which ends in our losing possession in promising areas without getting the strikers involved. Just get it in the box. Geremi was particularly guilty of this last night, and previously Duff on the other side.

Barton was disappointing, I think N'Zogbia's energy is something we need in midfield, so he'd be my preference, especially for Fulham at home.

I've been critical of Nicky Butt in recent weeks, but credit to him he stepped up last night and performed much better. He got stuck into tackles and won good possession in key areas.

We're getting there, let's just hope we start on Saturday with the confidence we found after scoring last night. If we do, we'll comfortably beat Fulham...but we need Oba keep playing.

I pray we survive this season. I hope we've learned our lesson in the transfer market: there are certain top managers (good "judges")who know a player's sell-by date, and are looking for gullible clubs willing to pay over-the-odds for washed up lowly motivated players. Look at some of our signings in the last few years from Chelsea and Man Utd (barring possibly, Butt). I'm glad we've finally got some grey matter to replace Fred upstairs, and we're looking to buy young hungry players (as Arsenal has done). Roll on next season after the big clearout. The only certainties I'd keep are: the goalkeepers, Milner, Beye, Faye, Enrique, Martins, Taylor (needs improvement), and N'Zogbia. The rest have 8 games to show how much they care, and how capable they are. We definitely need quality, and some size, speed, and athleticism. The game is now a track meet with skill needed too!

Paul, from my previouscomments you surely know what I think of Martins a player I have been following since his Inter Milan days and believe he a great signing for us. My concern is that there is a better way of showing you care, the last thing we need while we are in a relegation fight is the impression of players disrepecting a coache's descion. In this instance the issues has worked better than I expected, based on what I read due to Oba's and KK's understanding of each other the outburst seems to have created a unity in the team, hopefully it will show up in guts and effort in the next game.

I have a feeling we will destroy Fulham.

I cant really see Fulham coming up with all guns blazing. Attack is always the best form of defense. Our defenders are the main reason for our current situation; the entire defense is highly suspect and seriously unfit. The recovery element of their play is aweful,an inability to regain possesion and a dreadful positional statagy, make them amongst the worst in the Prem. ;just look at the stats.
Do we actually have a defence orientated COACH ??? if so a P 45 should be administered tonight. We lack the basics at the back and opponents are well aware of this shortfall in our set-up; its been rubbish for generations. We have to give KK the chance to pull us out of the fire , then begin a complete clear out, because without a COMPLETE change of personnel, we will be in the same boat next season. Good players have fallen well below par and the thin squad, has allowed them to play every week; regardless of the abysmal form. No other set of supporters would have stayed so loyal; we deserve a lot better than this and ASHLEY must spend big, to renew the fortunes of the club
