TOON KIDS BOOK PLACE IN THE FINAL

Lee Ryder reports from Whitley Park, Blue Flames Club

Watching Newcastle United's youngsters this season has certainly been light relief for some Toon fans this season and anybody who was at Whitley Park tonight watched the young Mags go the distance with battling Whitley Bay.

Reserve team coach Adam Sadler actually fielded his "reserves" with bigger guns such as David Edgar, Andy Carroll and Fraser Forster rested for the clash with Bay, Arsene Wenger eat your heart out!

But the Northumberland Senior Cup final is now expected to take place at St James's Park against Blyth Spartans when Sads could hand the big three a return!

However, it was Aussie winger James Troisi and Wesley Ngo Baheng who grabbed the headlines at the home of the NFA.

Troisi's weaving run from mid-way in the Bay half early on rocked Whitley but the team that are challenging for the Northern League title and the FA Vase refused to give in.

And after pressing United for most of the game looked like they weren't going to find the breakthrough.

However, in stoppage time Bay won a free-kick on the edge of the box and the man who United rejected last season in the shape of Lee Kerr, who partnered Albert Luque in his only game for the club in the second string, curled home a great set-piece in stoppage time to level.

With Whitley's part time players looking drained though French teenager Baheng latched on to a Troisi pass in the first period of extra time and stabbed home for 2-1.

It was Baheng's first goal and the man who Big Sam plucked from Le Havre will hope the first of many in a black and white shirt.

Bay continued to push for the replay and when Mark Minto headed against a post with 40 seconds to go it looked like they'd got one.

Yet Newcastle's kids could yet end the season with a trophy in their hands, albeit one they are expected to win anyway.

Nevertheless an entertaining night for the 850 or so people who showed up at Whitley Park to support the region's non-league and second string scene.
