Sunderland game is a great chance for Toon stars to join an elite club

Posted by Lee on April 17, 2008 2:43 PM |

Folklore has been one of the key words of the week on Tyneside with plenty former Toon legends urging the current crop of stars to write themselves into it alongside them.

You know who I'm talking about people like Liam O'Brien, Andy O'Brien, Scott Sellars, David Kelly and Nikos Dabizas.

All of them are permanent fixtures in the black and white history books which shows that Newcastle have dominated the fixture in modern times.

James Milner joined that club in the corresponding fixture in November when United escaped from the Stadium of Light with a draw that didn't look on the cards.

Milner sadly won't start in the Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday and may not even make the bench but for Kevin Keegan it would now be a case of who would he drop?

The team is playing as well as it has all season at the moment with the three big hitters in attack capable of causing Sunderland mayhem, it's hard to see all three of them having an off day.

And as previously stated, Joey Barton has been getting closer and closer to the target, this game is tailor made for him to grab his first.

Speaking of Taylors, Steven Taylor, is has also went on record to say it's time for him to get on the scoresheet again.

And given the Academy products history after scoring goals, it's hard to see how the game would restart after his celebrations should he bulge the net against the red and whites.

Taylor will come face to face with Academy stablemate Michael Chopra who he won't want to give an inch to on the day.

Mark Viduka, Michael Owen, Oba Martins, Nicky Butt, Joey Barton, Geremi, Habib Beye, Taylor, Abdoulaye Faye, Jose Enrique or even Steve Harper - which one will be the new derby hero come Sunday night?

As Liam O'Brien said earlier in the week, they'll never be forgotten if they score the crucial goal against Sunderland.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I think the last lin eis a bot OTT. Yes, previously this may have been the case. Names have been made and remembered. However, with things looking good now also at Sunderland it's hard to see anything but a prolonged stay at the top tier of English football this time round. Thus meaning these fixtures becoming more and more frequent (However, in no way less and less meaningful) I just think that, yes a player could write his name in folklaw, I dont see it happening in just one game but more over the course of the next 5 or so years.

Sneaking feeling that this years hero will be Beye, just a gut instinct that he will score. Please God that he does.

Mag in Boro, having read your post and listening to the one Legend show, MacDonald, helped by non legends Slaven and Horswill, I get the distinct feeling that supporters of the Smoggies, and the great unwashed, are more concerned about what happens on tyneside that they are about there own problems. Their idea of a great season is to finish above us, that it appears to be their measure of success. Very flattering for us methinks.

What a huge game!!!!! I can`t wait!!! I honestly think we have more than enough going forward and the fact that we have conceded 2 goals in 5 games also helps. The atmosphere on sunday will me unbelievable and will be a sell out unlike the stadium of plight prior to this season( i.e the demolition derby, they only sold about 38000)

As people have stated in the past the derby is a great leveller but it`s our`s to lose,if we get the ball down and play we should have far to much, lets hope so anyway!!!!!!

I hate to say this but I think Sunderland may have us here. They have a dogged attitude with a 5 man midfield that could well dominate tyhat area
